She is just singing empty words in a monotonous way. She is above average but unless she works on emotionally connecting to what she's singing, and her pitch and range, she should stick with Disney.

This isn't actually bad. She looked perfect for the role, and her acting has come a long way, it's just those damn vocals. especially compared to Rosario Dawson or Renee Goldsberry.

Almost every person in that show is a celebrity on some level or another. Tracie Thoms for the RENT movie, Nicole for being the LEAD SINGER of a huge band, Aaron for his stage fame, Vanessa for HSM. NOBODY cast in this version of RENT was a nobody, except maybe extras. And no one complained about Nicole because she was actually really GOOD .

Not everyone can be perfect at a role. I just was pointing out the fact that she was NOT chosen solely for being the best at the role or any other such thing. It was that she should be disliked (or liked, because people have a right to enjoy it too) for her performance here and not her performances a few years ago.

@10centsworth No, that's not true. It's definitely possible to do that. I'm not saying it's easy; you definitely need experience and a really strong set of lungs to do it. But Vanessa doesn't have that, and to me, that just means she wasn't ready to play the part yet.
It takes experience for people to get better everyday. Vanessa isn't perfect just like we all aren't perfect. By doing this she's gaining experience & learning. that's what it takes to improve right? Acting on stage isn't easy & it's hard to satisfy every1. She has the basic talent, but girlfriend needs to learn what breath support is. With some REAL (non Disney) voice lessons and experience she could be decent. But she was definitely the wrong choice for this role.
I don't think Vanessa was completely horrendous, it was just a really wrong her voice is way too innocent and sweet for this part and for a rock musical..
Come on guys, it wasn't that bad. Give her a break, of course she would appear as the weakest performer here because she's performing with professional broadway actors. :)

This is the only thing I have to say about all this Vanessa hate: if she wasn't Vanessa Hudgens, would you even be complaining? Probably not for most of you, or at least not so vehemently. I would expect some comments about her voice sounding forced or nasaly, because it does. She's not the best Mimi but not the worst, either. But all the vehement "OMG I HATE HER SHE KILLED THE SONG GO DIE!" is only because of who she is, and therefore only feeds her fame.

It's not that I think she was GOOD, I've even said before that I had just been starting to respect her acting ability until I saw these, and I still think she's better on screen, though not singing. So it's not the criticism, it just seems like a lot of people are bashing her simply to bash Vanessa Hudgens, because Disney hate is oh-so cool and unique. If she was unknown, yeah a lot of people would say she's bad, but not this violently.

@Matdredalia i do think they would have chose her. she was a no body when she she did the first HSM and got casted im sure there were a million more talented but they chose her!. you people need to get over it. they chose her! and it was a very good show. no one complained about wayne brady or nicole scherzinger !

@TGSchannel You're missing the point. When they chose her for HSM, yes, she was a nobody. But they didn't choose her for this performance as a nobody. Almost every person in that show is a celebrity on some level or another. Tracie Thoms for the RENT movie, Nicole for being the LEAD SINGER of a huge band, Aaron for his stage fame, Vanessa for HSM. NOBODY cast in this version of RENT was a nobody, except maybe extras. And no one complained about Nicole because she was actually really GOOD .

@TGSchannel And if you look at my comments, you'd notice that I don't really care that they chose her. She got up there, she did her thing, she was decent, whatever. Not everyone can be perfect at a role. I just was pointing out the fact that she was NOT chosen solely for being the best at the role or any other such thing. She was chosen for the same reason many of the others were chosen --- they're already big names in the music/musical/stage/theater worlds.

Much better, perhaps even lovely. The soft melody of the song really suits her voice. I am pleased with what I've seen though I think she could've worked a little harder on bringing the performance aspect forward. Overall, a great song! :D

tbh, i was expecting a lot worse. dont get me wrong, its still awful and theres no way she should have been cast in something as hard hitting as rent because she just isnt strong enough. but you can tell she gave it her best shot so well done to her for that

I'm not going to lie I am a Vanessa and a Rent fan however I don't think has enough vocal talent for such a role. Her look is right for it but her voice just isn't. No need to hate on her, at least she's got the balls to get up there and do it.

@thisisntme I agree, in Out Tonight I couldn't believe she actually was "singing" this is better though. When she says "boys" at 1:26 she definately loved that... So that's all I don't like about this one. And how much she wants to be Renee. I just don't like the fact she's scaring my little brother right now. I asked him to listen to Out Tonight and he ran out of the room crying.

I didn't put the HSM connection together until I read all the hate comments... jeez people! I thought she was a good Mimi, actually. True, her breathing was a little odd and so was the way she sang some of the words, but honestly. Aaron was amazing, and I hate HSM as much as all of you, but this is trying to show that she can step OUT of the prissy little bubble she had previously been contained in. Zac Efron did it in Hairspray, why can't she do it in Rent?

@williams8410 I never said other people can't speak their opinions. I just voiced my own, which typically ENCOURAGES others to speak opposing opinions. And my opinion was NOT that she was good. It was that she should be disliked (or liked, because people have a right to enjoy it too) for her performance here and not her performances a few years ago.

@10centsworth No, that's not true. It's definitely possible to do that. I'm not saying it's easy; you definitely need experience and a really strong set of lungs to do it. But Vanessa doesn't have that, and to me, that just means she wasn't ready to play the part yet.

It takes experience for people to get better everyday. Vanessa isn't perfect just like we all aren't perfect. By doing this she's gaining experience & learning. that's what it takes to improve right? Acting on stage isn't easy & it's hard to satisfy every1. Cant expect actors 2 b prfect. u cant compare her 2 the movie cuz in a movie they retake & pre-record. on stage u have 1 chance. pretty pathetic its easy for ppl these days to say something negative/mean, so hard to say at least 1 nice thing

She has the basic talent, but girlfriend needs to learn what breath support is. With some REAL (non Disney) voice lessons and experience she could be decent. But she was definitely the wrong choice for this role.

i feel she fucking sucks ass, she has an annoying voice when she sings. Vanessa does no justice to this part, I'm sure Jonathan Larson is turning over in his grave after seeing this monstrosity. Sorry little miss Highschool Musical, just because you may have a banging body, doesn't mean you have the voice or the pizazz to pull off this part. i say she needs to stick to disney rather than trying to ruin classic broadway performances.

This is the only thing I have to say about all this Vanessa hate: if she wasn't Vanessa Hudgens, would you even be complaining? Probably not for most of you, or at least not so vehemently. I would expect some comments about her voice sounding forced or nasaly, because it does. She's not the best Mimi but not the worst, either. But all the vehement "OMG I HATE HER SHE KILLED THE SONG GO DIE!" is only because of who she is, and therefore only feeds her fame.

It's not that I think she was GOOD, I've even said before that I had just been starting to respect her acting ability until I saw these, and I still think she's better on screen, though not singing. So it's not the criticism, it just seems like a lot of people are bashing her simply to bash Vanessa Hudgens, because Disney hate is oh-so cool and unique. If she was unknown, yeah a lot of people would say she's bad, but not this violently.
