  • I think I know what a dog feels like now, @ 5:30 I just wanna chase down that Frisbee.

  • I've been playing tennis for about 6 years now and I've only just really started getting into ultimate. I find it's amazing how much of the bodily motion comes naturally and makes sense, but for some reason never had the mind to put it together with the grip.

  • You sound like Josh Huepel!

  • @Splahhhh Next big thing iz gunna be like Beer Pong! Hahaha

  • your videos are the easiest to understand and very helpful, I've already improved. my form before was just some crap that I taught myself to do, no one ever showed me how to actually throw it right. thanks a lot man

  • dude I love this video. Using that same grip I can throw much farther now! :)

  • hey Brodie can you do a video on high release backhands and flicks?

  • @LilChaoster don't forget my fav...high release lefty backhands...got it added to the list!

  • this is exactly like holding a drumstick in match haha!

  • Forehand is the hardest do a tutorial on that please!

  • Nice vid, I really could've used this 6 months ago lol. My backhand still isn't amazing and I feel like I'm not getting enough spin so I'm gonna try tweaking a few things tomorrow and see if it helps.

  • Great video very clear and complete. You might want to show a backhand throw at the start of the video just to prime your audience on what you're working towards. Besides that, you did a great job breaking the mechanics down into parts.

  • Yup, checked out the huck vid as well. Good vid, nice technique. Again, was just wondering about the follow through and how that works with a mark. Perhaps this could be the topic of another vid? How to deal with the agro mark...

  • @timbochung def...i actually love it when the mark is crazy...easy to break

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for the advice on the quick release. How about the follow through? Starting at around 4:46 - I'm seeing big follow throughs. During a game situation - do you usually have the room for this or do you modify your technique to make it more compact (more linear than arcing?)

  • @timbochung I def modify it sometimes. I try to stay with the arc because that movement really gets me that extra power. But sometimes I will have to change my follow thru so I don't knock someone out lol...have u checked my backhand huck video out yet?

  • Great vid! Have you had any problems with the follow through hitting the mark? I get a bit paranoid about that and it really screws me up - especially if it is a tight mark.

  • @timbochung When you have a tight mark you want to practice on a quick release. The longer your windup and release the more likely the mark will mess with you and thus mess with your throw. Also you can work on pivoting to shift the mark to your right (breakside) which will give you more space to huck

  • So when is the spiking video coming ?

  • @butor20077 If we can get more than 20 thumbs up I will show you my best spikes!

  • you guys should do a lay out tutorial :)

  • @brianthelion118 DEF!!!

  • Hi, great video tip on backhand throw, it really works!

And at the end of the video there is so many great moments and song too, maybe you can name that song??

  • @vagons9 Yea were working on a link for the song! Stay tuned

  • @vagons9

    Fort Minor- Remember the name

    watch?v=SeCft3Gr8ds

  • Everybody has a different backhand grip so you can't say that like that finger needs to be there and that one here...

  • @MrDuifs Well I don't want anyone to think that this is the only way to play or throw or anything. I'm just trying to show what I do. And I have had some success with this grip.

  • Hmmmmm interesting backhand grip, I'll have to play around with it...

  • @Apollys let me know how it goes for you

  • Can you teach us how to spike the disc on ground ?

  • @butor20077 Florida Ultimate Already has that video out (Search Florida Ultimate Five Sponsorship). But if you are really curious how spike I can have a lot of fun filming that episode of Bro Tips.

  • You forgot the most important part of throwing a backhand: having a tall, fast person who can jump high there to catch it.

  • @thebrend88 Well that always helps!!!

  • What is the track in the end of the video?

  • more videos!!! give the people what they want!!

  • @toddhelton Were shooting 2 hours of video today!!! So let us know what you guys are wanting.

  • Gotta drop the highlight reel at the end. Good move.

  • @ChanimalX10 Just trying to show how the stuff we teach relates to in game play.

  • I think it might be helpful explaining why you hold the disc a certain way. Rather than just saying you should have the disc pressed against your hand for example, you can say something like, "you really wanna press the disc against your hand because you need to have a strong grip." just my 2¢

  • @timothyegilligan Thanks! This is a great suggestion. The only reason I don't go further in depth is because I'm trying to keep the videos from being to long. In the future we will be doing a lot more videos that are more in depth. So more specific things that we can really break down.

  • @brodiesmith21 Yeah I only say this because sometimes I think people learn better when they see why a certain technique doesn't work as well as what is the right way to do things. This is good work though. Keep it up

  • would it be possible to make a video about getting a quicker release on your throws? my release is pretty slow and so i have trouble hitting a lot of break throws because i can't get my throw off before the mark can get across to stop the throw.

  • @exeterdisc are you talking about the backhand or forehand?

  • @brodiesmith21 although both would be helpful, i think a quicker release on a flick is more important in games, because it opens up the IO lane (assuming a standard flick force).

  • @exeterdisc oh so your looking to throw an inside break? Well having a quicker release all comes down to shortening the motion with out losing power. If you watch the teaser video for the forehand you can see that just by snapping your wrist with a limited arm motion the disc can still have a lot of power. I would say to work on just getting more snap in your wrist and reduce the size of your arm motion. If you could take video and post it back here I could take a look.

  • travel

  • Good video, but I'm not a fan of your grip recommendation. The more pressure you can put on the inside rim of the disc, the more spin you can generate. Putting the middle finger towards the middle of the disc reduces spin and is not necessary for stability.

I'm not saying it's 100% wrong, but I would bet that most of the top throwers have their middle finger firmly against the inside rim of the disc.

  • @clizzaster Not that I know which way is or isn't the best, but I'm pretty sure Brodie is one of "the top throwers".

  • @clizzaster Well like I said I'm just explaining everything on how I do things. If you don't agree you certainly don't have to do anything I say. However, I would say that this type of grip has served me well over the years and I have had a lot of success throwing backhands and generating a lot of spin. One thing to think about is that I am 6'4 and thus have decent size hands. So my fingers aren't going to match up perfectly with you. Thanks for the comment.

  • @brodiesmith21

You make a good point. Everyone has different hands, and what works for one person won't be optimal for another. I teach a lot of juniors to throw, sometimes they have to use some abnormal forehand grips just because their hands are so small.

  • @clizzaster Acutally for the forehand everyone should roughly have the same grip...the backhand can be a little different

  • @clizzaster I hear you on this issue. Very small kids (e.g a 6 year old) may need to use a four fingered grip just to be able to support the frisbee. By the time they are in late elementary school, they should all be able to use a traditional grip. Aslong as they switch over to a two-finger grip when their hands get bigger, go with whatever works.

  • @brodiesmith21 Were you taught that grip when you first started throwing or did it evolve over the years? (asking as someone who changed his BH grip several times before settling on a 'best' configuration)

  • @bslade86 I actually was taught to hold the disc tightly with all four fingers against the rim (this is how a lot of people teach the backhand grip). Over the years I evolved to the grip I have now. I really think its the best grip for power, spin, and keeping the disc accurate and having the control to throw inside out or outside in.

  • Thanks Brodie!!!! This video helped me A LOT. Even though I can already huck, it was the little things that really helped. Keep the videos coming!!!

  • @colbrio1 More videos to come. If you have anything you would like to see let us know.

  • @brodiesmith21 It would be nice to have a video about flick hucks.

  • @colbrio1 On the way. We are actually currently working on that. Nothing like throwing a 80 yard flick.

  • do you have any tips on how to fix this problem that i have. i've been been playing ultimate for almost three years and recently have been working on my low release throws. my low release backhand IO's A LOT. is there a way i can fix that so i can throw flatter to in-cuts?

  • @steelerfan786 Hey. It sounds like if your low release backhand is coming to IO that your grip might need to be tweaked just a little bit. We can make a video on low release passes that will certainly help fix your problem and you will be breaking the mark at will soon!!!!

  • If you would do a video for the most effective way to pull, I'm sure there are a lot of people who would greatly appreciate it. Please and thank you.

  • @JOEMan9012 Will def do that. Make sure you subscribe so you get all the videos when I post them.

  • Florida Intramural Champions eh? Impressive.

  • @Vilageidiot13 obviously I know what I'm talking about lol.

  • This is easily the most helpful video on youtube. It should have way more views then some of the crappy hippy ones with 85,000. This is how to throw a backhand by a national champion and an athlete. Awesome video. So helpful. I've already taken the wobble out of my throw by practicing this.

  • @nikegolferxl you wouldnt mind helping an old friend out on how t
