Obito didn't originally give kakashi a gift for his jonin promotion, kakashi's eye got messed up, Obito got half of his body crushed by a giant boulder, Obito had just activated his Sharingan that day, and had his team-mate Rin(a medical ninja) perform an ocular transplant, to replace Kakashi's messed up eye with Obito's sharingan eye.
