I'm Roman Catholic and it doesn't matter who wrote this. All that matters is that Jesus Christ has risen! I greatly enjoy a beautiful, majestic, grand version of this hymn no matter what faith the church is. Thank you so much for posting! It brought me to tears...
Here we are celebrating the Messiah's resurrection from the dead, and some people are arguing over who composed the hymn or the colour of robes? Who cares? CHRIST is risen, He's risen indeed. That's all that matters.
in Isaiah(42:1) 1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
So there is no more obvious statement than this one. As God has clarified this truth that he is a slave of God and God has placed his spirit on him to support him like the other prophets.
stop arguing about who compose this beautiful hymn. this song was composed by Charles Wesley, but all of those people came from the catholic church, cause that' was the ist christian religion ever lived.....God bless.
just utterly stunning; this is absolutely the standard that we should all aspire to - fabulous arrangement, top-class playing, all ages involved! Moved me to tears!
Beautiful, as always Mr. Metzger. You should come to Tallahassee and play on some of the organs here. Two of the PC(USA) churches here have very nice ones (Taylor and Boody, and Holtkamp). The PCA churches all three have Allens I think...
@umdet this hymn did not originate in the Catholic Church...composer Charles Wesley was a part of the Anglican Church and then joined the Methodist movement...beautiful hymn that defines all of Christianity though..I'm Catholic and enjoy hearing this every easter
@upsguy323 Actually, the hymn has both Catholic and Protestant origins. I's a variation of an earlier Catholic "Jesus Christ Is Risen Today", a 14th century Latin hymn which had been translated into English and published in Lyra Davidica in 1708. In some hymnals, "Jesus Christ Is Risen Today" is in fact the 3 stanza Complete Psalmodist version with one or more of the ADDITIONAL stanzas written by Wesley appended. So yes, you can thank the Catholic Church AND Wesley for this lovely hymn.
@umdet Did the catholic church kill people back on the 14th century? I don't remember. This hymn is not considered catholic or whatsoever. Catholics should thank Protestants for millions of Protestant hymns they "use".
@umdet This beautiful hymns was written by Catholic?. What the hell is that Catholics claim everything protestant and praise themselves. Almost all hymns Catholics use are protestant hymns just like this but they have no shame in claiming ownership.
Just look around and look back and see how they have gone far from the Bible and have done atrocities to humanity. I am not talking now about what those Catholic priests and Bishops are doing to small children.
I thought this was excellent! It's one thing to read the music, but to random ring and know when to come in with a variety of ages is just awesome. I would listen to this again. +
Translating petelinca's comment from Portuguese to English reads as follows: "A wonderful ceremony. Full of Spirit Sanctified. In praise and glory of Jesus. Hallelujah!!" and I can't disagree..if this brass/handbell/organ intro can't announce Easter and the triumph of new life that Easter represents, I don't know what can

Plus, say what you like about Rutter, and I know he has his critics, but arrangements like this are, with the proper use of the word, genuine genius

Not a Catholic hymn originally. It was written by one of the Wesley brothers - Charles Wesley, I believe, who was an Anglican.
