That is indeed unfortunate! I can't imagine a voice like Kraus' being ignored for further pubication in the least form as a Special CD! This one man's elegance (courage) will stand him in such goodstead that I wonder why some group doesn't buy up these fallow rights and after due process offer the family holding the rights sufficient consideration as to bring Alfredo Kraus to us on a Special CD.

you think it was to avoid the F#? I think is because the low E from the beginning and all that phrase low. But is a good point...the F# is a very difficult note but Kraus had not problem with this.
This is one of the most elegant singers ever to sing opera in my opinion. I always think of people with heroic characters when I hear Kraus sing and take great pleasure in listening to him smoothly attack a difficult passage and finish it so beautifully that I imagine him tipping his hand to the competitor who mistakenly dismissed him. He was a great singer and from what I read and hear from those who sang with him he was generous and patient to a fault. Bravo maestro Kraus!!
I agree and suggest that most opera lovers or just plain "fans" have built their opera and "operatic hit" bases on the best versions of arias they happen upon as they move through their particular world. Someone isolated on a small island in the N. Atlantic or somewhere in the Tropics can hardly run out and buy a ticket to a top opera house. Neither can the majority of others but all of us can isolate our budgets enough to save and send off something we've heard only once. Good for us!
You really hit the nail on the head with your observation. Initially, there's nothing flashy about Kraus's singing. No mannerisms, instead he gets directly to the core of the music and brings out the meaning in a very pure way. He lets the music speak for itself and doesn't add anything unneccessary. The reason why mannerisms exist imo is when the artist feels subconsciously that he doesn't understand the material well enough and has to substitute something flashy instead to cover it up.
A performing artist confident in his understanding of the work knows that he has plenty of challenges just developing the full potential of the work as written.
He feels no compulsion to gild the lily, or as they say in China, add legs to a painting of a snake!
Wonderfull version.

Three dozen different renditions of Musica Proibita are currently posted on YouTube.
I've been auditioning them for the past two weeks because I have to learn this aria for my voice class.
I have to say, Alfredo Kraus' interpretation is as near perfection as one can get, both technically and more importantly, expressively.
I am simply blown away. Absolutely magnificent.

Dear blakemooney,
I agree. Kraus was amazing.
I am a lifelong opera buff. but I am not a "fan" of particular individual.
Each of the opera greats are better at certain arias than others. None is "the best" every time.
But Kraus is remarkable for the number of arias that he interprets more intelligently than others.
He really grasps, then communicates the content of both the melody and lyrics.

I think you said it very well indeed.
