Ther are links on the web for the gm hei conversion-A! Cardone makes a electronic vacum advance distributor for 74-80 225.Just make sure the air gap is .005 so you have 300mv a/c cranking and it will trip the gm module.Any 4 pin module will work, just heat sink it-as far as coil its whatevry you can find-I went with a 83 chevette because it has spade terminals on it and dont need anything special to connect-one set of terminals is +( the set with the bridge between them)
With power windows-the motor is the crank handle pivoit or mount,so when you take the motor off there is no way to turn the gear -the pivot wears out from lack of lube/dirt.There is 1 drivers side and 2 new passengers side still avaible in the entire country but for $200 I'll fabricate something. Its like the HEI conversion-$40 for a module and coil when its &65 just for the mopar connector at the icm box
Most of the usuall wear parts are out there-but manuaul window regulator-clutch ball studs and fork arms- the 10" fylwheel-rear main spring leafs and rear axle housing are impossible.Still looking for the coorect grill shell-headlight doors and grill for 83-86,zip out there. My had a 2bbl from the factory-the lean burn is removed along with the spark control- the 252 comp cam is in it-almost the same as a 66 cam but more lift and hydro-and 4-10 gears
I didn't realize these had become old trucks. 10 years ago they seemed so common.
Mine is a 2bbl from the factory as well, the lean burn is there, but the vacuum line that goes to it is plugged, because it pings with it connected. I'd like to switch over to standard electronic ignition, if i can find a distributor and firewall mounted spark module for it.
Likeing the idea of the cam, i might look into that.
And man you're lucky with the gearing :) Probably matches the OD well.
Hey, i've been trying to rememeber to tell you this, but i kept forgetting.
Its about how you said you can't find a manual window regulator for a dodge truck, and i looked all over the internet, including ebay, and couldn't find one either, but it got me thinking, based on the pictures of the motorless power window regulators, I think there is really a chance, that the power ones, and the manual ones are the same, you just bolt it to your crank setup. Just an idea
I had the 170- It was a 1 owner little old lady car that had 30,000 miles on it when it was 10 years old. What Im saying is a car in that of shape needs tlc to make it last-they are getting EXTREMELY rare (along with parts) and worth a bunch in good shape.I also have a 83 d 150 with a 225 and 4 spd od manual.Thats another one that parts are almost non existant for.Its your to do with but 10 years from now you going to be rethinking things
Well, i hear what you are saying, and if we were beating the car up in anyway, i would totally agree. the only thing that was bad for it, would be mud from the tires coming up, that could rust it out if not cleaned off. But other then that, its just driving around. I sold this late last year, because the township made me clean up the field. So i sold it for 600 (fair price) to a married couple. the woman had them all her life, 64 170's, so she was really happy. They're restoring it
I have an 83 d150 with the 225 and 4 spd OD manual too. And unfotunately its 3.21 gearing in the rear, so i can really only use 4th when i'm going over 60 on flat land, otherwise it just wastes fuel... Some one was trying for fuel economy, and it backfired. Really bad for starting off on hills, too, especially with any kind of weight in the back. But i love the truck, and i drive it almost every day. Around here i can find parts pretty well. And autozone has most parts i need.
From someone that owned one of thoose-with a manual and no radio-its a crying shame to see you with that car, find some late model cookie cutter to tear up and leave the few remaining classics to thoose that apreciate them. The aluminium head light rings arent event dented!
Right... those headlight rings aren't dented... and they still aren't. And they weren't going to get dented from what we were doing here. So back off, and re think it. This isn't in ANY way TEARING up this dart. Thats Ridiculous.
Also, its MY car, so if i want to take it, and drive it around the field, and let my friends try it out. its non of your business, no matter if you've had one before or not. I wish this had been a manual. Was yours a 170 slant, or a 225?
@snakesonaplane2 hey dipshit, it was a figure of speech, but I would guess you failed english class from day one thru when you quit school in the 8th grade because you were 19 yrs old, fucking asswipe, shut the fuck up and go masturbate some more

The older automatics had two oil pumps. One was by the output shaft so if you reached about 25-30 mph by pulling or rolling down hill it would build trans pressure and spin the engine over. Nice huh? Newer trans just have one pump so that won't work anymore. I was told the 170 cube engine had a shorter block height than the 225 so not all internal parts were inter changeable.
Yep, then they stopped putting the rear pumps in because hardly any people were using them to pop start them.
I kept trying to tell mike about the rear pump, and how you could pop start them, but he didn't believe me :) Till the thing started :)
Yep, the 170's ar shorter then the 225's and the 198's. Not interchangeable. You can tell the 170's because of the short hose from the waterpump up to the head.
Yeah, i like it alot. Not a restoration project, i'm just plaining on getting it road worthy again, and keeping it that way :) Very fun to drive on the road. no PS and all :)
@hheywire Yep :) this things gonna stay nice looking for sure :) i'm not going to bash this thing up at all.
thats a tricky question man, :) They didn't just use the slant's. but from 63-the end they did have the slant as the base engine for the base model.
This was the chysler compact economy car back then. and 170, 198, and 225 Slants were very economical :) but from 64 up they had v8 options. 273 v8 in 64 :)
Thats scary. Make sure you sell those awesome Slants when you take them out. For god's sake don't scrap the awesome machines. They are seriously great engines. Undoubtedly
@tommartyn best thing is... were in the south (idk if u r.... its hard to tell since davesfarm) so there is almost no rust..... it used to be a "3 on the tree" manual.... but the shifter broke... my mom fresh out of collage (community collage for mechanics) shortened the linkage and now its a stick shift
Nice! yeah man, the three on the tree thing is fun though :) my 65 dart is 3 on the tree. Thats awesome though :) She fixed it up. I have a 74 dodge pickup that was 3 on the tree, and i'm thinking about making it floor shift. pepboys sells a little kit for about 60 bucks. Might be the easiest thing i could do. Can't get the column shift to work out.
We're in pa, romping around up here :) Yeah, the daves farm thing is weird. saying redneck and all. Strange.
Yeah, Just keep checking ebay every day. save your search as a bookmark, and all you'll have to do is click on it every day. rate the search by date newly listed, and all you'll have to check every day is the top few. :) thats how i got a left rear tail light for this beast :) NOS too :) Chrysler part in a box :)
why!?!?! WHY WOUD YOU DO THIS TO THAT CAR? i have a the exact same one same color and everthing. but, mine came with a stock 270 in it. then i put a 317 in it V8 its super nice. i would like to take your gauges from you because my gas gauge does not work. and your radio : / haha
Haha, just doing it because its fun :) Hey! if your gas gauge doesn't show how much gas you have, its probably the sending unit in the tank, not the gauge in the dash. You might be able to replace that from the trunk. might not even be much money, from autozone or something. Ok, well its 75 bucks, but still not horrible.
64 darts came with 3 different engine options, 170 Slant 6
225 Slant 6
273 V8
And the regular v8 people replace it with is the 318. :) Is your's automatic or stick?
haha well me and my dad tested the sending unit and it was fine. we just ended up buying a new digital gauge from jegs. and yes mine is an automatic. and i done have the orginal speedometer in it which kinda sucks because i like the original do you know where i could get one by chance? oh and my dad owns his own auto parts store so i NEVER shop from auto zone lol
Nice! yeah, auto zone does suck. And it's got to be nice to get stuff at the price your dad gets it for. Sorry, i don't know where you could find a speedometer for the dart. Could check ebay all the time. one's got to pass though eventually.
Gas gauges on those car shouldnt go out check the sending unit in the tank. there like $75 i went thru the same issues with mine. Oh and i have never heard of a 270 slant six. the biggest made was a 225.
i think he has a 64 dart 270, and they thought that was the engine. chrysler fucked that up, because they also had the 64 170's like this one, and there actually is a 170 slant in it :) should have been dart 225's, and dart 273's as well :) all coresponding to the engines :)
???? what? Darts, and possibly all mopar cars from back then do not have leaf springs up front... they have torsion bars. so if they would blow through the wheel well's on the darts, then they would blow through on all 60's mopars. and we beat the shit out of these things, and that has never happened.
Yeah man! it would be easy now a days, with all the electronic automatic's out there. Ah, i thought i read one time that the 170 had 110, and the 225 had 145. 110 does seem like a little much for that thing though. It was almost dangerously slow. doesn't help being automatic though.
If its in good shape, very low on rust and all that, then yeah! great idea! :) these cars are so easy to work on. and these engines are just really cool, and last forever! :) really a fun car! and just very different then others. i think chrysler was the only american company putting out unibody cars at this time. these are very collectible too! so if you get one and fix it up, people will want to buy it bad! alot of people have stopped here and wanted to by my 65 GT convertable.
Thanks. Only problems that I know it has is the interior is shot, it needs side view mirrors, a new heating coil, one of the silver things around the headlight (I normaly know what that is called), some new tires and a repaint. Looks like I am getting a Dart.
With the way modern cars are going, I think I'll drive it till I die.
haha! yeah man! 1976 celica gt. liftback deal. 20R engine. i have a few videos of it up. you can search my vids for celica and you can see more of the beast. very low miles (for a toyota) really want to get the beast on the road soon. some serious rust issues here and there though...
Thank you! i really like it also. I want to put it back on the road and drive it. its a fun road car. and its not bad on gas either. it was dodge's economy car of the day. :)
thanks! yeah, the push button thing is weird. very different. its feels like pushing a button on a juke box, or selecting a different track on an 8 track or something... haha.
Don't worry man, Minor beatings only. nothing damaging. no smashing, or crazy ruts, or anything to dent it, or anything to mess up the trans, or anything... just some minor flying around with the beast, and some semi sideways action!
haha, its pretty easy actually. i guess because the wheel is so freaking huge. but yeah, well, it does take alot more turns compared to the powersteering dart i have.
not even a small chance. haha, love this car, and if the headlight rings were gone, i'd just have to get new ones... so it might be better to skip that step.
thanks man! yeah! its a slant. a 170 slant. trucks may have only came with 225 slants which are more powerfull and more popular. the 170 block is slightly lower. shorter stroke. I had a 1979 D100 pickup with a 225. it was great. i have some pretty crazy videos of us beating it insanely with no coolant, and half diesel, half gas. free fuel i got from my cousin filling up the diesel work truck with a half tank of gas.
its in pretty good shape, there is some rust, but i don't think theres any bondo. or very very little. a few rust holes in the bottoms of some of the fenders. though that kind of thing can all be fixxed. what kind of money is big money?
Why cant it be restored? The frame bad or something?
If it is it would make a perfect monster 4x4- use a chassis from a dodge 4x4 or something with 33" wheels- one of my dads cousin's had a 68 elcamino with a lengthened blazer chassis under it- thing was like 4' off the ground- looked way cool.
haha! chrysler's from that era are ALL uni-body, no frame. starting in the late 50's or early 60's. i had it jacked up in the field, the undercarage sitting on tires, and it was as high as that would be... it was cool looking! made me want to do something... maybe you could just bolt a unibody to a frame. why not?
hahah, yeah, the 65 gt convertable i paid 4000 bucks for! i had some money then though. not like right now where i'm counting quarters to go get some diesel to get to work today... haha. yeah, i just want to fix it up and drive it on the road. i'm ok with it being massively slow. gonna leave the 318 in the trailduster, and the 440 in the Chrysler 300. :) the darts just fun to drive. Popstarting an automatic and all...
did ya keep it
i love them my dad wreaked one in a side of a hill

limitlessracer 2 years ago
i think he has a 64 dart 270, and they thought that was the engine. chrysler fucked that up, because they also had the 64 170's like this one, and there actually is a 170 slant in it :) should have been dart 225's, and dart 273's as well :) all coresponding to the engines :)
tommartyn 2 years ago
Mine is a gt model and i have the 225. Thats the biggest made Yeah chrysler did fuck that up.
limitlessracer 2 years ago
but they had the 273 v8 from 64 till they started using the 318.
I have a 65 dart gt powered by a 225. things awesome.
tommartyn 2 years ago
Duh oh yeah i forgot that was the year they started the v-8. And yeah it they are great. check out the video of mine running it sounds sick.

the shoks wood blow thro the fenders aka leaf springs
1966mopar1966 2 years ago
???? what? Darts, and possibly all mopar cars from back then do not have leaf springs up front... they have torsion bars. so if they would blow through the wheel well's on the darts, then they would blow through on all 60's mopars. and we beat the shit out of these things, and that has never happened.
tommartyn 2 years ago
I love the push button auto on these darts, they should put push button autos in more cars today...and a 170 slant has about 90HP
that70sshow89 2 years ago
Yeah man! it would be easy now a days, with all the electronic automatic's out there. Ah, i thought i read one time that the 170 had 110, and the 225 had 145. 110 does seem like a little much for that thing though. It was almost dangerously slow. doesn't help being automatic though.

Tom, I'm thinking of buying the 270 model of one of these, think it's a good idea?
pieman97405 2 years ago
If its in good shape, very low on rust and all that, then yeah! great idea! :) these cars are so easy to work on. and these engines are just really cool, and last forever! :) really a fun car! and just very different then others. i think chrysler was the only american company putting out unibody cars at this time. these are very collectible too! so if you get one and fix it up, people will want to buy it bad! alot of people have stopped here and wanted to by my 65 GT convertable.
tommartyn 2 years ago
Thanks. Only problems that I know it has is the interior is shot, it needs side view mirrors, a new heating coil, one of the silver things around the headlight (I normaly know what that is called), some new tires and a repaint. Looks like I am getting a Dart.
With the way modern cars are going, I think I'll drive it till I die.

did I see a 7O's celica ?
scubagrass 2 years ago
haha! yeah man! 1976 celica gt. liftback deal. 20R engine. i have a few videos of it up. you can search my vids for celica and you can see more of the beast. very low miles (for a toyota) really want to get the beast on the road soon. some serious rust issues here and there though...
tommartyn 2 years ago
hay tom. I like the car i raelly do. what are you going to to with it ??
martijncola 2 years ago
Thank you! i really like it also. I want to put it back on the road and drive it. its a fun road car. and its not bad on gas either. it was dodge's economy car of the day. :)
tommartyn 2 years ago
thats a cool old car never seen the push button shift. 5 star
budd14589 2 years ago
thanks! yeah, the push button thing is weird. very different. its feels like pushing a button on a juke box, or selecting a different track on an 8 track or something... haha.
tommartyn 2 years ago
I notice you guys like sprite,or what ever is in the bottles, moonshine come to mind LOL,nice dart
resinator1 2 years ago

tommartyn 2 years ago
would love to, but im on the canadian west coast,in british columbia
resinator1 2 years ago
wow you shouldn't beat on that car :O
krankiev 2 years ago
Don't worry man, Minor beatings only. nothing damaging. no smashing, or crazy ruts, or anything to dent it, or anything to mess up the trans, or anything... just some minor flying around with the beast, and some semi sideways action!
tommartyn 2 years ago
Any chance you would part with the headlight rings? Lol... Im serious though.
ErwinVonRommel 2 years ago
gotta love armstrong power steering! lol
racindeere65 2 years ago
haha, its pretty easy actually. i guess because the wheel is so freaking huge. but yeah, well, it does take alot more turns compared to the powersteering dart i have.
tommartyn 2 years ago
not even a small chance. haha, love this car, and if the headlight rings were gone, i'd just have to get new ones... so it might be better to skip that step.
tommartyn 2 years ago
What a cool car, that looks like a slant 6 ? I used to have a truck with one in it years ago.
JASONS1PLACE 2 years ago
thanks man! yeah! its a slant. a 170 slant. trucks may have only came with 225 slants which are more powerfull and more popular. the 170 block is slightly lower. shorter stroke. I had a 1979 D100 pickup with a 225. it was great. i have some pretty crazy videos of us beating it insanely with no coolant, and half diesel, half gas. free fuel i got from my cousin filling up the diesel work truck with a half tank of gas.
tommartyn 2 years ago
I know someone were I live that would pay big money for that thing. the body pannels look perfect, no dents or deep scratches. perfect for restoring
1skiinIan 2 years ago
its in pretty good shape, there is some rust, but i don't think theres any bondo. or very very little. a few rust holes in the bottoms of some of the fenders. though that kind of thing can all be fixxed. what kind of money is big money?
tommartyn 2 years ago
very very cool :)
NJFordPops08005 2 years ago
Thanks man!
tommartyn 2 years ago
Why cant it be restored? The frame bad or something?
If it is it would make a perfect monster 4x4- use a chassis from a dodge 4x4 or something with 33" wheels- one of my dads cousin's had a 68 elcamino with a lengthened blazer chassis under it- thing was like 4' off the ground- looked way cool.
dangeroustoys56 2 years ago
it could be restored.
haha! chrysler's from that era are ALL uni-body, no frame. starting in the late 50's or early 60's. i had it jacked up in the field, the undercarage sitting on tires, and it was as high as that would be... it was cool looking! made me want to do something... maybe you could just bolt a unibody to a frame. why not?
tommartyn 2 years ago
Sure- with some shims/mounts to make the body tight to the chassis anything is possible.
Ive seen quite a few custom 4x4's like that- one was a full size chevy station wagon, another was a Z28- and a 69 mustang.
Some fabricating/customizing would definitly be needed to pull it off.
dangeroustoys56 2 years ago
nice lol flat tire junk!!!
richthecardude94 2 years ago
haha, yeah, whats with that? the tires are only about 20 years old! they must suck.
tommartyn 2 years ago
you could of have restored that
coshyno 2 years ago 2
Yeah, its a shame its un restoreable now.
tommartyn 2 years ago
lol
coshyno 2 years ago
cool guys. Whats the plans for this one. yall shelled out some serous cash for that old dart. A 440 o a 318 would sure spin those tires.
84400 2 years ago 2
hahah, yeah, the 65 gt convertable i paid 4000 bucks for! i had some money then though. not like right now where i'm counting quarters to go get some diesel to get to work today... haha. yeah, i just want to fix it up and drive it on the road. i'm ok with it being massively slow. gonna leave the 318 in the trailduster, and the 440 in the Chrysler 300. :) the darts just fun to drive. Popstarting an automatic and all...
