That's the southwest side of Detroit - that's a railroad yard area - several sets of parallel tracks. I've crossed those tracks at that intersection hundreds of times. The firefighters and police were responding to an accident at the intersection. No excuse to park on active tracks like that for the cops or fire. That cost a bankrupt city a six figure fire truck.
Ok people if you look at before the Amtrack hits the firetruck.....I must also tell you this is the Wolverine Express that goes from Pontiac, MI to Chicago, IL......you should see that there were cars that were in the intersection in front of the truck.....so even if the truck would have moved a little.....the train would of still hit it....also Amtrack trains don't do that kind of damage if they tap it.....if you would of noticed when impact occured....the rear was totaled
@MVRTA108 The mass of the train was significantly greater than the mass of the fire truck. If the collision were completely elastic, the firetruck would be halfway to the moon within seconds. ... Okay, so maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. My point is, conservation of momentum dictates that the effect of a collision is always worse for the less massive object, in this case the fire truck.
Train wins...No matter what. The only thing that can stop a train is another train or a bridge down...or of course a derailment...but that's about it.
@rommelfcc Intersection or not, there is always a sign that says "do not stop on track". Also, if there is an intersection, the line to stop would be on the other side. Obiviously there was a incident on the other side, just the idiot who park the fire truck and police car there.
The engineer did what was he trained to do hit the truck than stop.I work for a railroad and that's they tell us to do. I'm sure that truck has sounded it's last siren.
@pfd7slick Are you serious? How were they supposed to know a fire truck was on the track?! The fire truck driver was an idiot for parking there. You clearly know nothing about railroading. Also the train came around a blind curve doing the legal track speed. How are you supposed to know what on the other side of a blind curve if you can't see around it?! Very idiotic comment the train crew did nothing wrong.
@metraF40PH163 like i said before, I understand it trains cannot stop very quickly, but if you watch the video it definitely look like what I said. Who ever said the firefighters did nothing wrong? But 'idiotic comment'? Coming from the guy who clearly knows nothing about firefighting, or taking a comment like an adult for that matter. Once that pager or gong goes off, its a whole different world. Try it one day. Then we can talk. But otherwise relax, and grow up.
@pfd7slick I don't need to know a thing about firefighting & I don't. I am a railroader not a firefighter. The reason I said it was an idiotic comment is because you were blameing the train crew who did nothing wrong. listen even emergancy vehicals are not allowed to park on the tracks without notifing the railroad dispatcher that there is an emergency. The reason i said something and called your comment idiotic was beacuse you are insulting fellow railroaders.
@metraF40PH163 Well i apologize for insulting railroaders. I think there was alot to blame. Your are correct about emergency vehicles not parking there. Their not allowed to even if they notify someone. The main thing (bsides the firefighter not parking there) was the comm center should have notified the railway. Its their job really to do that. Sorry about the conflict, I put that comment a while ago and it was all really stupid. Apologies to everyone.

whos the dumbass driving that firetruck!? FIRED! get out! how the hell do you cross the trax when you know theres not enough room for you on the other side to clear the tracks? Mustve been a rookie
Passenger trains run 69MPH tops in this area. It takes almost half mile or more, depending on tonnage and gradient factor, number of locomotives, etc. to stop a train. If anyone gets "fired"...it will be the truck driver not the train crew. Been railroading for 37 years and have seen a lot of dumb stuff over the years that could have been prevented with a little COMMON SENSE! Sig. Tallree
The question is why arent those stop sticks down to signal people that the train is coming. Other question why isnt the train conductor informed that there is emergency vehicles are on the track.
@hut98 - Why is it that people just don't understand that trains can't quickly stop like SUV's, cars, trucks, etc. Even if the conductor knew in time and called the engineer the engineer would've not had time to slow down and stop. The problem really has to do with people who still persist and insist on using railroad tracks for everything but what they were meant to be use for.
Lack of communication. The fire and police department should of been contacting the dispatcher or tower or yard master (if they were in yard limits) The point is they should of got in contact with someone from the Railroad and could of got the tracks shut down.
What a surprise - a train actually comes rolling down the tracks! O_o
If you have some drunkards get caught this way you just say "random idiots", yet police and firefighters really ought to know better! They should at least have put someone there to watch and warn. How pathetic!
The ladder company had not actually been dispatched to the accident they were at (they were out checking hydrants). The Lt. ordered his FEO (driver) to park the ladder were you see it. The Lt. was fired, the FEO was demoted but remains on the job.
@Flipzsd2 Black driver? Did he actually think a train would see him and stop in time?
It is extremely rare that fire apparatus break down. Automatic transmission.
Plus, driver had 25 seconds from the time signals activated to train arrival. That is plenty of time to move the apparatus, unless wheels already chocked.
The officer also bears responsibility for allowing the apparatus to be parked on or in foul of the tracks.
Do not stop on tracks or even shift gears on tracks.
That's the southwest side of Detroit - that's a railroad yard area - several sets of parallel tracks. I've crossed those tracks at that intersection hundreds of times. Besides the police car that backed out of the way, looked like there were 2 more in the intersection blocking traffic.
