In truth, a variety of people go into the service and I have known my share of them. The guys who go into the service because they have no clue what to do next can get washed out during basic training. There are also bright young people who thoughtfully choose military service. I knew lots of people who joined the forces right after high school, and I knew them personally, so I can honestly say that they were uneducated (and immature and unintelligent in some cases). Those two sources of news account for around 96% of all news represented in American media. While the soldiers serving overseas in the Middle East may certainly know what is going on there, they may not know about all the nuances of what is going on in government on the home front. That is the point he was making.

I think the title of this clip is more than a little off. The point Belzer makes is one everybody could agree on. Volunteers are entrusting their lives to a government that lies or at the very least is foggy about the intentions of it's warmongery. However tides appear to be changing and hopefully the US troops will be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve, by the small group of people at capitol hill that risk precious lives and waste your money by the billions.

In fairness, a lot of people in the US military, at least those who aren't in the USMC, Seals etc., and those who are just basic grunts, join the Armed Forces because they come from a two-bit town, they can't afford to go to college or aren't inclined, and there are no other job prospects. I'm retired Army and College educated for the Enlisted is the exception to the rule. Officers are paid much more for the same recruit doing the same task. Army barracks living for the Enlisted is like low income shared housing, whereas Officers are given preferentual treatment.
I agree. My wife was enlisted for 4 years before going to OCS and becoming an officer. So we've seen both sides. People have to remember that our military is a slice of the population, and just like other US citizens there are a few educated people, a few smart people, and a large number of people that can barely tie their shoelaces.
The Army is not very particular about who they take. One of the soldiers who served with my wife in Germany, couldn't read English yet "passed" the ASFAB.

I truly agree, as a former soldier, I found myself faced with the only option I had and join the Army. I was fortunate enough to be sent to Afghanistan which I agreed about. My opinion about being sent to Iraq would be much different but we are not allowed to speak out against our leaders choices. So when someone is interviewed about their opinion of the war, of course they say they want to be there and had a sense of duty to do what they do. If allowed to speak freely, opinions would change

In truth, a variety of people go into the service and I have known my share of them. I knew lots of people who joined the forces right after high school, and I knew them personally, so I can honestly say that they were uneducated (and immature and unintelligent in some cases). There are plenty of people who graduate from college and cannot find employment that relates in an important way to their major. Also, he never called the troops idiotic or uneducated. He simply stated that when someone is under enemy fire and under constant threat of violence and death, they may not have the luxury of reading the news or political debates from several different sources to get good information.

Those two sources of news account for around 96% of all news represented in American media. While the soldiers serving overseas in the Middle East may certainly know what is going on there, they may not know about all the nuances of what is going on in government on the home front. That is the point he was making.

Many in the military don't believe what their elected officials tell them, but they are obligated to do what they are told.
9/11 was a surprise attack and so was Pearl Harbor, the troops can't be there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That's about as absurd as saying, where were the cops when my house got robbed and you never reported it.

I think the title of this clip is more than a little off. The point Belzer makes is one everybody could agree on. Volunteers are entrusting their lives to a government that lies or at the very least is foggy about the intentions of it's warmongery. However tides appear to be changing and hopefully the US troops will be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve, by the small group of people at capitol hill that risk precious lives and waste your money by the billions.

In fairness, a lot of people in the US military, at least those who aren't in the USMC, Seals etc., and those who are just basic grunts, join the Armed Forces because they come from a two-bit town, they can't afford to go to college or aren't inclined, and there are no other job prospects. There's nothing wrong with admitting that. It doesnt' mean that they aren't honourable of course, but a lot of military in US are economic conscripts.

US army commercials always depict a ethnic man in the ghetto or a white boy on the farm. Never have I seen them air a commercial in which there was a man receiving his college degree and then telling his father that he wanted to join the army.
The military knows what they are doing. They target these demographics because they know that they will jump on the chance to earn a middle-class income with benefits. It's either that or work in the local factory.

I'm retired Army and College educated for the Enlisted is the exception to the rule. Officers are paid much more for the same recruit doing the same task. Army barracks living for the Enlisted is like low income shared housing, whereas Officers are given preferentual treatment.

I agree. My wife was enlisted for 4 years before going to OCS and becoming an officer. So we've seen both sides. People have to remember that our military is a slice of the population, and just like other US citizens there are a few educated people, a few smart people, and a large number of people that can barely tie their shoelaces.
The Army is not very particular about who they take. One of the soldiers who served with my wife in Germany, couldn't read English yet "passed" the ASFAB.

I truly agree, as a former soldier, I found myself faced with the only option I had and join the Army. I was fortunate enough to be sent to Afghanistan which I agreed about. My opinion about being sent to Iraq would be much different but we are not allowed to speak out against our leaders choices. So when someone is interviewed about their opinion of the war, of course they say they want to be there and had a sense of duty to do what they do. If allowed to speak freely, opinions would change

I think what he meant is that the troops have other things to worrie about and dont have time to question the validity of their mission. Moreover its not the troops choice if they wanna be there or not, how they feel about it isnt relevant. The United States Armed Forces belong to the citizens. They will fallow the peoples will (which is supposed to be relayed thru the President, even if thats rarely the case) and that's that.

I am a Belzer fan, but I have to disagree with him on the whole, and especially of his "the troops there are not the best people to ask about the war" attitude. Seeing they are there, surely it means they are the best to ask about it; they are seeing it first-hand and know what goes on!
That's like saying the top cops know more about what goes on on the street than those who actually walk it!
Seeing Belzer plays a front-line detective in SVU, I am surprised by what he is saying!

Being there first hand does have disadvantages. See a little boy die from an IED, and youll want to protect them (or go crazy cuz you see his death over and over) Help re-build a bombed out home, and bond with the other builders, doing something good. Naturally your emotions are going to start effecting your views and your judgment. You can loose the detached stance that is usually needed when peoples lives are in your hands and theres decisions on a global level to be made.
