Roger Waters did not feel this way about his own mother. I suspect he felt this way about Syd Barrets mother (well part of it). What happened is Syd became mentaly ill and the drugs he did didn't help. Syd had to drop out of the band. I've read that Roger wanted to visit Syd but his mother thought it was a bad idea. I think Syd's mother blamed the band for him using the drugs causing mental illness. I think this is where Roger got the idea of over protective mothers. He lost his best friend!

This part is about his mother overprotecting him as a child because his father died in the war. Her sheltering of him led him to be unable to form a relationship with women or anyone for that matter. Him hiding his joint is just symbolism of him hiding his feelings later in life from women. He had to hide who he was from his mother to not hurt her and it carried over to his wife etc. His mother and resulting relationship issues is the core of his mental wall of no feelings.

The movie is based on Waters, and a bit of Syd. Learn the history of the band members and listen to to the music and it makes some sense.

In the scene where he reads the scroll about his father's death, the last name says "Pinkerton" and it is widely believed that the character on the album and in the film is named Floyd "Pink" Pinkerton. However in "Young Lust, the phone operator says "Mr. Floyd". So it's really unknown. And the character is based on Roger Waters' childhood, as his father really did die in the war and he did have a horrible education.

It was the guy from the peace protest she was at during the song. Don't ya hate when that happens? That will push a lot of dudes over the edge, it did pink, hence pretty much the rest of the movie where he all but loses his mind in a world of drugs, lust, violence, ego, etc., etc.
