"The brother's gonna work it out" is a line from an old TV show. As I remember it, the show was about a black Vietnam Vet with PTSD. He was talked out of an act of violence by a black doctor, who tells police: "The brother's gonna work it out". I don't remember if it was a drama or a comedy/drama. Does anyone remember this? This has been eating at me since I heard the Chemical Brother's version 15 years ago!
@erpmarlo13 you gaddam right ... the absolute PINNACLE of Hip Hop production ... long gone are the days where you could use 35 samples in a song and get away with it ...
It's a real shame to see Flav get the rep hes gotten recently with his shows and such. It's nice to see him in the public eye, but his portrayal sadly ruins the brilliance of PE's work.
@zosodude13 I agree Flav went south with his TV shows, trying to make a buck. he needed Chuck back in the day to keep him focused and grounded. Flav is a great musician and he's funny as hell - I like him in PE - and the "joker" or the "fool" often is the source of wisdom in Shakespeare too, but he slid downhill. Chuck D is a leader of men and Flav needs his guidance. peace.
@olderthanyou See my reply to Tony Alvarez above - PE is STILL rippin' mics to this very day. I saw them live with X-Clan and Bootsy Collins a few years ago, shook hands with Chuck, Griff, as well as the members of X-Clan after the show. PE's last several albums (check out public enemy dot com) are SLAMMIN!!!!!!! Especially one that Paris (guerrilla funk dot com) produced called, "Rebirth of a Nation", as well as, "How Do You Sell Soul To A Soulless People That Sold Their Soul?". Peace.
Freshman year in high school Columbus Ohio! Damn we bumped this joint on the tape deck in the school hallways and drove us all bananas! Public Enemy was some serious NOISE - Loud and in your face! Rap music was amazing...creative... and innovative! I'm just glad I was alive to witness firsthand. Nothing like it - nothing close to it, 98% rap music SUCKS.
The Cops sucks They killed my friend a week ago and the funeral was Saturday He diddnt have enough money for a cab ride The cops followed him and he was going to get money to pay the fare he was reaching for his wallet to pay the fare and the cops thought he was getting a gun and shot him FUCK THE POLICE Im so damn mad
i am a white girl from Austin, 40 years young, and still love PE!! Everyone can relate to their message!! Rebellious greatness REAL HIP HOP! im also a DJ and look up to Terminator X! and all the badass DJs of the 80s ONE LOVE :)~~~~
This song was made for those of us who attended the 1989 GreekFest in Virginia Beach. Of course the truth was never publicized. The "Official" story was that we were just a horde of rowdy and unruly miscreants. Anyone who was there knows what happened and what we experienced. PE put it in a song for us.
i came up on p.e. and the music they made was something that u heard and literally felt ! i dont disrespect the music of today cause all music is made to be heard and felt by a targeted audience - i'm just glad that in that era they targeted a mass of young listeners who had no other way of releasing the frustration that so many of us were and still go thru then and today -p.e. was the voice of a mass of ppl who needed to channel our frustration and restore pride within ourselves !
you think theese thugs now dayz have half the testical to talk about what Chuck D was talking about in the publc enemy era, no way their is a new devil in charge and if you dont talk about killing the black race you dont get a record deal. . .
I was there! It was my youngest son that was an innocent bystander killed that night in Va Beach, Va! You would have thought it was another Vietnam War that night!
We got to stop glorifying stupid shit and start moving forward in our thinking and being. We to busy killing one another and doing dumb shit. America is a unfair and rigged game, but if you educate yourself, leave niggerotry alone and work hard, you can achieve! Get away from your materialism: rims, tennis shoe's and blunts.. Stop being consumers of bullshit and start being advocates for better living and better choices. We buy more bullshit then any race on the face of the earth.
@HALFDEAD66 Started investing in yourself and your community. One spark can start a fire that could change a race and a nation! White, ya'll in the same boat. If you don't have a higher education , good job or rich, you are considered a nigger in the eyes of the wealthier white kind. A nigger is not just defined by skin, but social status.. Think about it......
@MrTonyalvarez Sad but So true MrTon. I was ten when I first saw this and it literally blew my conscious into another world, something I'll forever be grateful for and something I canNOT say about rap today (mainstream-wise).
@MrTonyalvarez Hey Tony, PE (Flava Flav notwithstanding) didn't go nowhere - except underground. They are so fed up with all the bullshit that's been passed of as Hip Hop that that's where they stay. I saw PE, X-Clan, and Bootsy Collins live in Covington, KY and shook hands with Chuck, Griff, Bro. J, Paradise the Architect, and Bootsy after the show. Check out the following RECENT PE albums, "How Do You Sell Soul To A Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul???", and "Beats, Rhymes, & Places". Peace
man i loved that album, da best way is to go to them music shops that buy, sell, and carry used c.d.'s or go online and check maybe cd baby or cd universe.
i luv dis song. i used 2 play dat album all day wen it dropped. plus my cuzzn in da video, he da one bumpn music wit his homie by da car and da police cum sweat dem. classic shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU EVER FIND THAT, you better fucking make a copy and send it to me. Im pretty sure they didnt make it in anything but vinyls and cassettes.
i dont think your gunna find it anywhere but random Ebay posts or digging in old school bassment crates.
Don't get it twisted. Just because a number of you young suburban white kids sit around and listen to the bullshit rap that your parents give you money to buy.. don't think everything's A..OK. There are still a bunch of us conscious blacks who still don't like your ass. PE was rappin about the maltreatment perpetuated by your redneck pecker head grandparents and parents who grew up in the 80's, which wasn't that long ago. So don't try to act like were all one big fuckin melting pot.
@movinonup2u speaking for myself i dont give a fuck whether you like me or not if its based on the color of my skin you are no diff then those inbred rednecks at the K.K.K. i grew up in S.E. DC and i learned a lot of shit there on those streets.... such as nobody on earth can scream the hateful word NIGGER with more anger and disgust then one black to another .....
@movinonup2u now it doesnt matter if you like it or not the melting pot is happining soon you will have no one to blame for your failings but yourself
That is REAL footage from then...To hell with racists...Really, any color, any age, any creed, any Racist...Either laugh at their stupidity, or just exterminate them through education...Laughing at them and belittling their argument is fun though...Anyway, Public Enemy are the shizznit..They helped me OPEN my MIND!! P. E. ACE...
Nation of millions is undoubtably the best hip hop album of all time. PE had a real message, a positive message: Stay in school, learn your history and stay away from drugs. Not like some other groups i could mention spitting shit about blunts, fortys and bitches, coz that stuff gets old real fast. (and yeah, i know this track is from Fear of a black planet... probably the second best hip hop album of all time... Nuff said... KICK IT CHUCK!!!
Saw PE at House of Blues(Hollyfake, Ca) in August of 07. Chuck-D rolled out on stage in 80's gym trunks and a tank-top.. that's f****** awesome.. As always, Chuck and Flava sound the same in person as CD... Sick show..
1989-1996? I think you should start a year before in 1988 which was the greatest year for rap EVER.
Notable albums being- A Nation of Millions/ Straight Outta Compton/ Great Adventures of Slick Rick/ Strictly Business/ By All Means Necessary/ Long Live The Kane/ Critical Beatdown/ Paid in Full/ Tougher Than Leather!!!!!
Back in the day people didn't have an outlet especially young people, like youtube and facebook. Thus they could not express their idiocracy and lack of knowledge. This is where music came from. Atleast 80's and 90's rap/hip hop.
Was it in Virginia Beach where this was happening...cops beating black college students doing the greek step shows in 89-90...that inspired this video
....then re-create 'that world', their hate all over again? kill the mind that creates hatred, division, disunity, envy, bitterness, jealousy and contention. the flesh is innocent.
I hope black people don't think all whites are evil and racist. I was a 14 year old white boy when this came out; it was my anthem! While never having suffered from police racism, i have received more than my share of police "agism".
@speedwack I'm of Jamaican heritage, born and bred in London, England. no not all of us think that. I've grown up with white and black. I'm 36 and have pals who are white that i've known since childhood. I know there are good and bad in every race. Good cop bad cop too. peace.
@jsalmonful Welcome to America...where even your white friends you have had since childhood, still come from racist parents and friendship is only on a certain level of non-discussed relations...Welcome to America where a society still puts direct and indirect limitations on those friendships....Welcome to America where the same "white people" that left England because King James was combining the church and state..then they turn around and used that bible to enslave us......Welcome!!!
@thebizresources Hello friends, Look at how my people in Scotland were treated by other white people from England!! That was bad enough but they topped it for minorities. It is unfathomable to me that people can treat others so wickedly and I learned the critical lessons of equality from the Bible. Evil men claimed, and still do claim, to be doing God's work YEAH RIGHT more like Satans work and they get the profits. God always gets the blame. That's also injustice. Take care.
That is your reality and only the arrogant or close minded would try to deny the reality of another human being. I get so tired of people popping there empty head out and proclaiming to the word that " all White folk aints bad, I knows one who lent me some money or I have a White girlfriend"! If an Irishman says the English are hell raisers then that is his reality not yours! People like you miss the message
@speedwack na there's plenty of black people there with common sense to know not all white are racist,
i know plenty of cool white boys (most of met through sports) but it's the older white bastards that i have to work with who could really make you feel like all whites are racist pigs, but still i know thats not the case
@speedwack Thats cool. Not all white's are foul, just 80%! You just happen to be in that 20%. Republicans and Tea faggers .... I mean baggers are the new KKK. They angry cause they feel threatened. The hate minorities... and boy, don't be Mexican in Arizona! They hate everything that don't look, think or live like them. People think because of Obama, blacks have arrived. News flash, we made history, not progress, its a difference. We don't help our cause with dropping out of school.
when the world ends you think were going to be in abonded supermarkets in search for food and theres going to be walls covered in forum like conversations like youtube comments.
except it wont be "dope!" and life experiances.
its giong to be: -"thinking of heading west, heard Red Cross set up a refugee camp"
-"LOL, Russians landed in Washington so their dead, im staying here no use dying lost"
-"yeah, lets die in a ball in corner, not die trying. wheres USA spirit?"
I was at the Virginia beach riots in 89.Everybody started pumpin fight the power in theirs jeeps. it was crazy! This song wa s in response to what happened.
lmfao you put it in quotations fool. Everyone knows youre white, you use puncuation and capitilaztion. Little experiment, look down all the comments you can tell. Guy below me put an aposterophe in head's and noddin'. lmfao. below him the guy capatilized the nouns Virginia Beach and Greek Week. its not that other races dont use what we call "proper english" were just the only race whos obssessed with the perfection of what we say. long live white scribes!!
Mate, you need to go back to school. Not only do you not use punctuation, you can't spell either. Why are you so proud to be so shit at written english? Don't you want to be taken seriously & get a decent job? You're the fool.

"Get involved!!!"
Chuck used to beat it into our heads;that's what it means to be a 'citizen' in a democracy because to be a citizen is to be radical.
As the present days reveal, progess doesn't just happen, citizens have to force it.
Power to the people!!!

@FuckingStanz You can't count out 88, the best year in hip hop. So I'd say from 1986-1996.

Atleast 80's and 90's rap/hip hop.

the term "old school" origniated in 1980
30 years later i think old school has moved up and what used to be old school is now ancient

@jsalmonful i agree man, why does anyone even give a dam about race? Its so backwards, it shouldn't even be an issue in this day and age
ChrisCantHaveItAll 9 months ago
