one of my sister's old boy friends had in the early 70's a Mercury Cyclone with a blown Paxton 289. Straight front axel from a Econoline van. He used to drive around the "U" at our high school popping the front end off the ground :)

A gasser is a late '50s-early '60s style race car, usually with a straight axle. Back then the slicks were rather hard and traction was a problem. People used straight axles to raise the front and help with weight transfer to the rear wheels. Real gassers had rear ends close to stock height, as raising the back end would only negate the gains from the straight axle. This car would have been laughed off the track.

Gassers are a trend that is certainly back, I have never heard anyone "make fun of" a gasser. It is certainly easy to criticize something when you have no idea what kind of time, skill and money it takes to build something that is YOUR own. Liking hot rods and building hot rods are two very different things. Build one for yourself and I bet you come back with a little more respect for someones else's car, weather it 's a style you like or not.

Back in the 60s and 70s it was about building bad ass motors and rippin down the track - but the NHRA limited the size of the slicks you could run. So, they lifted their cars for weight distribution, equaling more traction to the rear wheels! These gassers are what lead to the term funny cars. Now you know.

Only problem with the suspension is in the rear. Real gassers sat low in the rear end, usually with radiused fenderwells. The whole purpose was to promote weight transfer. The slicks in the late fifties and early sixties sucked, and weight transfer helped them get bite.
