love his book and i feel Tom Ford's A Single Man is the best "education plot" I've ever seen, if you have not seen it yet, please do yourself a favour and rent it.
@Luke1268 Yeah it wears a bit thin half way through... I understood his brooding but it dragged on with a very unforgivable ending (to satisfy the audience).
That's laughable, at best. Critics have almost unanimously lauded There Will Be Blood as one, if not the best film of the last decade. Time to get some taste.
yeh and you have noi mind of your own. you just accept everything 'the critics' shove in your face. cos your a fucking cock sucking android now fuck off.
Loved STORY, but I disagree with his take on the unconscious mind, because neuroscience shows that there's no such thing as an unconscious mind where the "true self" is hidden.
Another education plot - Raging Bull. Like Scorsese says, at that moment in the prison cell, some kind of grace is conferred upon him, he learns to go easy on himself and others. He has to go through all those dark points so that he can come back and apologize to and his brother and laugh at himself in that night club. It's a small change, but the entire reason for watching is to see him fall and then rise up... it may only be an inch or two, but he still rises! Oh, and good fight scenes!
Anybody think a movie like Groundhog Day would fall under the education plot category. Obviously amongst other genres. But his description generally matches. Or does Mckee more or less mean that the ENTIRE story arc (or most) takes place within the psyche of the main character (where there are other strings attached in say a movie like Groundhog Day, i.e. Romance)
Definitely, because all of your enjoyment in watching it comes from seeing how the main character changes his attitude towards life and other people. He loses his cynicism and learns the value of relationships and helping people. The rest of the plot hinges on whether or not he completes that journey.
I got this guy's book for X-mas 2 years ago. It was like being blind and then hit in the head with a brick and, after waking up, being able to see for the first time. Any creative writing instructor that has a bad word to say about McKee should be avoided and ignored.
Well, although I agree with you that this book is probably the best and is eye opening, Bill Idelson did think that "structure" masters such as McKee or Field or Seger were full of it, and Bill Idelson was a hell of a master too... So I guess it's a matter of opinion or stance that you take on the writing. It can all work pretty well.
I learned a lot from his book, "Story," and hope his book about Thrillers comes out soon. Actually, that's a question, Mr. McKee: When will we see that book?
Yeah I've started reading this book, its fantastic! I loved the part in the book where he dismisses this 'art film' division. I've always thought that just because a film is commercially successful it doesn't mean its a bad film but I've seen so many pompous pricks who dislike a film just because its popular. Anyway it would be excellent if he wrote about Thrillers :)
@vmaj20 He's actually been trying to write a genre book recently, but he's also a self-admitted procrastinator. If you've got the money and want to hear his advice before he finishes the book, he does do genre workshops.
I like what this guy has to say. Education plot describes exactly the screenplay I'm trying to write at the moment. Does anyone know if Education Plot is covered in his book? Or just in the seminar?
He should stop drinking coffee, his head is going to blow!

Everything is covered in the book. So yes.

I first read the book in 98. I still hold it close, like a screenwriter's bible. It's in the book.
