  • thank you for the explanation,i'm always argueing with my friends about this because they think shifting without a clutch harms your transmission

  • Wow, this was very usefull. So according to you, shifting without the clutch in high rpm's is not so smart?

  • well i learned something, thx

  • Then why the hell cant i shift gears in my truck without it grinding and without rev matching like on a bike -.-

  • @MicroOrginisum Because your truck must not have a sequential transmission.

  • I shift with out the clutch every race

  • @hondacrfrider27 what are you riding?

  • okay quick question, what would happen if u shifted gears on a normal like 2 stroke bike with the trottle on and not using the clutch or only partally pulling the clutch in? would you be able to do it (not saying i want to) but could u

  • @VipersPure You can power shift if you know when to do it with the throttle on but you have to know when to do it. It is harder on the transmission though and if you force it in this is how you can bend your shifting forks. Pulling in the clutch is the other way to power shift, pull in clutch and keep throttle wide open and shift. That method would be easier on the shifting forks.

  • @tobyeo ah okay thanks i was just wandering cause ive been practising motorbikes for when im 16 and i sware i do it and when im thinking about it i no im doing it but i dunno about the rest i probs do i just dont think about it :L

  • @tobyeo hey my old yz100 when i press the clutch it takes a few seconds or for me to make the tranny turn b4 it engagesi suspect dirt in the clutch what about you

  • @VipersPure i always shitf my kx125 2stroke without clutch^^

  • @ShInYaKu46

That is because you are dumb!

I know a guy that sounds like you and he breaks everything he touches :D

  • @mrzach111 you know nothing. you can accelerate faster and if you can do it good, it isnt bad for the engine. n00b

  • Toby, good call on the "power shifting" vs. "speed shifting" issue. You can safely shift the tranny without the clutch when in the correct rpm range. I ride 6 spd. Huskys and they have got to have to worst clutch pull in the world. the springs need to be stiff in order to keep the clutch engaged on 500's. I have Popeye arms. I use my clutch when going slow too. I hardly ever break the rear wheel loose, torque and traction work perfectly together. I live in Utah's wide open spaces. more speed plz

  • OAO!!

  • I like shifting without the clutch while woods riding. Just when you come off a turn and let off the gas you hit the next gear and fly.

    "my bike" 1973 DT3-250 Yamaha 2 stroke

  • I need help with my dirt bike when I press the handle clutch to shift it wont go it looks like the clutch it stuck or the gear.if the bike is off you can shift up and down with out the clutch but if it on the clutch wont shift.if I put it on first it jump. if you know how to fix it let me know.

  • @maniatico380 Hey, You have the possibilty of two seperate problems. The clutch is most likely worn a bit and is now out of adjustment due to wear. most machines have two different adjustment location. One at the clutch lever perch and one where the actuating arm mechanism pushes on the cluth rod (usually inside the engine cover). Or you have a cable problem. dry, worn or routed incorrectly. there should be just a tiny bit of free play between the lever and the perch when adjusted correctly.

  • i only have one question...why do you shift with no clutch...just your pref. ? i personally like trails which i can make love to the clutch apply power when and however much i want(4 stroke) and i like your uploads...i always wanted to learn how a dirtbike trans works...and also there is a good bit of info about two strokes in your vids even though you arent talking sometimes..ima sub :D Pce

  • @bentboybbz Thanks, it's just easier to shift without the clutch, my clutch pull is also very tight. Since I let off the gas anyway the clutch is not really needed. In 4stroke it is more nessecary b/c engine braking will slow the bike down faster than 2t.

  • @tobeoI kno that's true I don't race either I have a kx 65, it's nice and fast..

  • I never power shift it's not good it messes up the teeth and you would have to b really quick with it if you try to do it slow it mess up the transmission and also the teeth

  • @CvMassMurder617 Ya, I never power shift, its not worth the wear I'm not racing

  • i never power shift my 89 kx250 because it is stupid to wreck the trans when you could have done a simple act as pull in the clutch lever

  • @cat123456789101 Ya, I never power shift, its not worth the wear I'm not racing

  • @tobyeo my gear box is now wrecked from natural causes i guess oh and i had to buy a trans of ebay for 85 bucks that comes with all the gears, shafts, forks and drum, is that a good price

  • @cat123456789101 Ya, that's a good price. A single gear is usually $50.

  • @cat123456789101 Thats what i was thinking, its a stupid idea to not use the clutch, the clutch is there for a reason and if it wasnt needed it wouldnt be there.

  • This is a good video I never new how the gears work because I just got a kx 65 and I never asked how they work and stuff... But good video keep it up..

  • THANKS YOUR CHANALE IS HELPFUL

  • @TheBigJonJon Thanks, glad you liked it!

  • Hi,

any bike with this kind of gearbox should be able to be shifted without clutch.

I still have aXT600 (I'm into this bikes since over 10 years), it is known to wear out 5th gear (or 2nd/ 3rd if used off road).

But this problem is caused by high torque on low rpm, causing wear off of the teeth but I never heard about XT600 had probs with this sideway things.

oh, and me and other guys shift without clutch, even on street- not always but frequently.

  • On a 2 stroke there is not really engine breaking so you're able to shift. On a 4 stroke it is not as easy and you may hurt the trans. Nice job you covered what I just said. Thanks for the info. I learned some new stuff! I dont use the clutch much on my 2 stroke either. Especially when I am racing.

  • @canammx1 I've been doing that for like 25k miles on my 03 R1 with 35k miles and it shifts better than my cousin's 08 R1 with 4k miles. People asked me how come my tranny shifts like butter, and my gears shift like on mercedes, and I have like 5x-10x more miles than their bikes. That actually saves your tranny, cause you don't hear that little click that when you use the clutch, w/out clutch it shifts 100 times smoother, you just have to know how to do it .

  • @canammx1 On 4 strokes you just have to rev match. Like twice a year I catch my self pulling a clutch lever, that's when I hear that little click. I do it when I'm racing, riding, playing, having fun, resting, chilling, cruising.... etc. You can see it on my last video @ like 5;36.

  • @vitaliyr1 Ya i know. I used the clutch just because the shifting for on the 4 stroke I was racing at the last race was coming loose. But thats about it.

  • this was very informative, as always, Thumbs up:)

  • @lauritzen2 Thanks!

  • So basically you can shift without clutch with any 2 stroke bike. Right?

  • @ivansmv if U wanna go fast dont use clutch, in cravel or mud it is ok. Gearbox can handle it easily :D

  • @ivansmv I am always doing it on My R1, that 4 cylinder 4 stroke.

  • @ivansmv Any machine with this type of transmission can be shifted without the clutch. It's all about how much torque is on the gears when you shift, anytime you can relieve the torque you can shift.

  • @tobyeo Most Japenese two stroke such as YZ RM CR & KX will allow full throttle upshifts without the clutch. Probably not the safest thing to do but you can do it.You must make positive up-shifts right at the point where the engine is done making enough torque to cause any major resistance on the gear dogs. You can also accomplish the same full throttle shifting simply by pulling in the clutch a moment before you shift, then making a positive upshift and releasing the clutch ,Throttle wide open

  • @jasonmccoll Your method of shifting is a very safe way to shift and could even be made safer by using the clutch. The problem with shifting WITHOUT the throttle on is while climbing gnarly hills, pulling catwalks or trying to out run someone The time it takes to get power back down to the ground is to long and you are losing speed and momentum you could have had if you shifted using the clutch at full throttle.Power shifting opens a whole new realm of dirt biking.Holeshots Hillclimbs Catwalks

  • @jasonmccoll ya, I never powershift and on any hill usually the 500 has enough power the delay doesnt matter but if it does then I just try again. The 82 Maico (and before) are actually supposed to be the easiest bikes to powershift because the shifting cam is a plate and a gear but I never tried it on mine.

  • @jasonmccoll That's true, if you can listen to the motor and know when you can shift when the throttle on you can do it without letting off the gas. I did mention that in a comment on a nother video but I just generally said as long as you get the torque off the gears you can shift. Shifting with the full throttle whether you pull in the clutch or not is powershifting, its easier to pull in the clutch to do that without the clutch you really have to know when to do it or can cause problems.
