Conventional military can be used to achieve strategic goals like in Iraq but it is next to impossible to conquer a country with conventional military these days because of advanced guerilla tactics, the people will resist occupation in any way they can as long a they live. The only possible way whould be to completely annihilate the local population and that is not really an option.
