  • Screw Vaughan Williams and his accidentals, I hate that whole step jump in the melody.. I think it's an E natural when it should be an E flat.. Some people like it but I just don't get the appeal.

  • @LearnToFly1000 And to think that some people worry about where their next meal will come from!

  • This song makes me want to wear a fancy ball gown and dance

  • just enjoy the music, it is very rekaxing heard it this morning and looked for it on here, thxs

  • "Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song and tune, a ground of the form called a romanesca.

A broadside ballad by this name was registered at the London Stationer's Company in September 1580[1] as "A New Northern Dittye of the Lady Greene Sleeves". It then appears in the surviving A Handful of Pleasant Delights (1584) as "A New Courtly Sonnet of the Lady Green Sleeves. To the new tune of Green sleeves."(From Wikipedia)

  • @ Lelboy... I stand corrented, and to show no hard feelings Im just off outside now to film some grass

  • This is my favourite greensleeves!

  • So we have twelve people who don't like like one of the most wonderful pieces of music ever composed by a Briton. I pity the fools.

  • This made me very happy. Thank you. <3

  • thanks for that wonderful little walk. Greens , leaves, and a beautiful song.

  • ummm....

it's not a Vaughan Williams composition

    it's a Vaughan Williams ARRANGEMENT

  • I can't watch the video because of how silly it is... a trashy thicket filmed on a camera phone. But thanks for the music nonetheless.

  • it is the version i want! thx!

  • Written by King Henry vIII....a beautiful tune, beautifully performed here.

  • @gasmeter1947 That's indeed believed by many. It's historically incorrect though. Historians have found versions as early as dating back to the 12th century. It IS english though, that's an undeniable fact.

  • @hoogestefan . I'm not saying your wrong as I haven't researched this tune, but can you explain how it was documented way back in the 11 hundreds as there were no manuscript or acceptable way of writing music , if it was handed down from minstrel to minstrel it would now be a completely different tune, now that's interesting , thanks for your contribution.

  • @gasmeter1947 Yeah...I worded that wrong....The earliest written version would date to about 1580, but there are mentions of it in literature dating back earlier.

  • This looks like the path by the river near my house, can't wait for the snow to go!!

  • The music matches the lovely gardens on an autumn day.

  • truly beautiful...timeless!!!!

  • So simple, yet so beautiful.

    Micheline

  • majestic piece! splendid!

  • good friend .. very good, God bless you

  • when asked jfk said this was his favourate song! this is why i like it:)

  • vaughan williams- pure and utter genius.

  • Beautiful song; nice video. Love the English countryside. And don't be afraid to be a bit nationalist about England. You guys held the fort after Hitler had knocked down all the walls in Europe. Anyplace that can give us a Winston Churchill deserves respect!

  • @pskidmore1986 Too much hosepipe

  • Immer noch und immer wieder eines der Stücke, die mit ihrer Leidenschaft das Herz des Hörers berühren.

Ewiger Dank an R.V.V. und den König ....

  • I'm glad that i'm English and even more so when i listen to this.

  • wonderful!! peter weir used this song for his movie master & commander!!

  • such a wonderful set of autumnal images and beautful music, thank you so much.

  • this made my penis sleepy

  • this version, and video, warms my heart.

  • Delightful piece of music. There's nothing wrong with the video. I'm a folk music fan. I was born in Watford during the second World War (the Nazi bombs were raining down) . The mid-section of this work was based on the old English folk song "Lovely Joan." Martin Carthy did a splendid version of this in the mid-sixties. I think it was on his first album. Greetings to one and all from Big Hugh of Mundlimup, in wonderful Western Australia. Cheers!

  • JUST GREAT.. .. bravo

  • please tell me where i can find scores for ochester? thanks.

  • @pskidmore1986 yes thanks i agree beautiful music and i dont think any vid i put up could equal it .

  • music is very fitting

  • video is a bit boring...... "bushes taken on a camera phone".... zzzzzzzzzzzz

  • @DistortedSoul2010 ,thanks for your comment not quite a camera phone and sorry it put you to sleep .

  • @trichoone

Well answered my friend, calm and dignified, like the music and pleasing video.

  • @trichoone Its a darn sight better than some static text or image you see in some videos. I for one appreciate any and all efforts you have gone to ;)

  • @DistortedSoul2010 The place is so beautiful, how can you not like it? well, good sir, will you tell me what part of which country is in the video?

  • @DistortedSoul2010

I love bushes...:) Specially green ones.:) you know, youtube is great because anybody could make and share a video, and the rest of us could enjoy it.

  • @DistortedSoul2010 Trichoone made the effort to entertain us, so why be petty and critical? Perhaps one day you might be bothered to post a hand-made vid - nah, probably not, you're just a griper.

  • I don't know why people doubt that King Henry the VIII wrote this song! He was an extremely intelligent and talented man. He spoke about 3 or 4 languages, was a great athlete (when young), a great tennis player, a talented musician and also wrote his own stuff and this he wrote for Katherine Of Aragon. I just love it the way you hear the 'in between notes' that you don't often hear - just fantastic.

  • @Blabloo72 It is not his intelligence that we doubt it is his heart. This beautiful song came from a true heart not a black heart.

  • so funny... on every youtube you will always find people fighting even if it's on something calming like this.

  • @oooohla123 NUH UH! ;)

  • This is a background music used by HKEAA for Hong Kong certificate of education exam.

  • love this tune, there is a really annoying icecream van that plays this by my house. kills the tune. :(

  • Just lovely! :)

  • The quality might not be the best, but it scores more than full points for content and 'design'.

  • Great music but mediocre video

  • In Fact, I love greensleeves all my life. I really really thank you for that beautiful video. It helped me to write an important letter. Many thanks

  • Ice Cream Van FTW

  • Gorgeous TWT I love it!

  • I always associate this music with the beautiful hills in north Northumberland.

  • oh amazing just amazing..

  • This is Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on Greensleeves.

  • It is truly amazing how passionate a piece can be if you take the time to listen to such lush and beauty =;]

  • briliant

  • So evocative of the British countryside. And sorry to sink into petty nationalism but it makes me so proud to be a Brit.

  • don't apologize, nothing wrong with being proud of your country man.

  • Doesn't matter. I'm also proud to be Dutch. And I agree; England is a beautiful country. Be proud of yourself, but not so proud that it comes to a conflict with others:)

  • @Caracalla23 Nationalism is the belief that your country is better than any other for no reason. Pride in your country is an entirely different matter. If Vaughan Williams had been born in my country I'd be very proud as well.

  • @Midnight722 What if we've got a good reason to believe we are better than the others. I wouldn't give up my crappy council house in blighty for all the money in the world if it meant i had to leave

  • @hugh3sy7 then that's pride, and there's nothing wrong with it.

  • @Caracalla23 Like every country, Britain has it good & not-so-good things. The beautiful countryside and VW's 'evocation' certainly belong to the top of the Good Things. So happy indulging! ;-) Sam

I am not British by the way, but i love Britain, it's nature & yes, i took VW with me while cycling there... talking about indulging...

  • @Caracalla23 Not nationalism, patriotism. This beautiful music makes you proud of who you are, there is nothing petty about that. Now if it made you want to go out and force others to do what Britain does, THEN it would make you a nationalist.

  • @thebigJM92 Sadly Jim I belong to a generation when the two were indivisable. I feel I was "encouraged" to feel guilty about Empire (something which was all but dead by 1963, when I was born) and when patriotism was essentially regarded as imperialistic.

  • @Caracalla23 It's true that there was a violent reaction to patriotism in all forms then, an understandable backlash to the moves of the past (when people looked back with hindsight rather than looking at it as a Victorian) but we have seen the unfortunate consequences of that. If the mainstream do not re-claim patriotism then the far-right nationalists will continue to have a monopoly whilst many normal people feel alienated from the political system, breeding discord and division.

  • @Caracalla23 And then there was the fear that patriotism could lead to fascism and National Socialism. But, while understandable, it was an overreaction. For a start the British people have never been militaristic enough to follow Germany into NS, and we are a country too old and established to follow Italy (which was only 60 years old) into fascism. We also naturally have a mild temperament and are more willing to be conciliatory.

  • @Caracalla23 Just think how remarkably violence free our country has been over the past 300 years or so. Since the Glorious Revolution (instigated by Parliament!) there has been relative peace, France has got through a monarchy and about 5 Republic's! And then look at our patriotic music. Does this song make you want to invade somewhere else? Does Jerusalem? Or even I Vow to Thee My Country? They make you feel proud, but not aggressive. Then compare that to the marches of old Germany

  • @Caracalla23 Nothing petty about nationalism; it has caused problems since the concept of the nation originated.Britain, as other nations, did a good things AND bad things. Britain has no corner on good scenery. I'm a Brit too (Ex pat) and am really pleased that the Lib Dems are now part of the government. Finally you guys are making some sense. Aled

  • @ifuliki

Eh? Your glad a bunch of loons and hypocrites are running our country?

    Thanks a lot!

  • @ignorantpom I cannot respond. You will have to be more specific.

Britain is in a mess and you can blame anybody but the LibDems since they only recently became part of the governmenr. Right?

    Aled

  • @ifuliki

The Lib Dems got all their votes on a platform that has now been burned and swept into the gutter.

Every major policy has been forgotten for a few cabinet jobs. They're a disgrace.

  • @Caracalla23 No need to be sorry. I am proud too! Haha.

  • @Caracalla23 It's just this weird world, patriots loving their nation labelled as nationalists. Be proud of what you are. We used to say "God, Family, Homeland"

  • @Caracalla23 Dont be sorry. It is not 'petty nationalism' to love your country. I love England very deeply but it doesnt mean I am agressive towards others or wish to denigrate their countries.

  • Definitely one of the most beautiful and lush orchestral pieces ever composed.

  • When i was in band in 9th grade we played this song at our christmas concert. Ever since then I have loved it. It is a beautiful song and it was a joy to play it. I will admit though that our band could never play it as well as he could. But, we didn't ruin it either. This is a beautiful video though.

  • Thankyou glad it brought back nice memories .

  • stupid video but good song

  • @mandar93del ironically, i`m in 9th grade and we played this song too and at our xmas concert. :D

  • Beautiful.

  • I've got the transcription for organ in Oxford's book of wedding music and unfortunately the arrangement is reduced. The missing part is the fantasia, which I realised after listening to the original version. Any suggestion leading to the complete version for organ?

  • Am playing the solos on violin in about 2 hours! Love this piece!

  • Wow. just wow... only a desert inhabitant like me know the best how green lands are a joyful sight...

Fantasia on Greensleeves is my all time favorite classical piece ever... the first time I heard it I kept on repeating the track more than 50 times... it is amazing..

Thanks for the video.. I love this green color everywhere

  • Claytonification- They probably don't look at you because you're of no consequence,or ugly.

  • @eeClaytonification

Lol. If England is boring my dear, then I am John Lenon

  • yes if you live in LONDON. Come to MANCHESTER.

  • At the time, the word "green" had sexual connotations, most notably in the phrase "a green gown", a reference to the way that grass stains might be seen on a lady's dress if she had made love outside.

An alternative explanation is that Lady Green Sleeves was, as a result of her attire, incorrectly assumed to be immoral. Her "discourteous" rejection of the singer's advances supports the contention that she is not.

  • @nurseyk8b The Americans also use to sing a song with the words "green gown" in the mexican war. That is why they were later called "greengos", in spanish Gringos.

English music is like blood in my body

  • @Boultbeemx .... Interesting, I have always understood that they sang another English folk song called 'Green Grows the Rushes O' amd thats where the word Gringos comes from.

  • When I found out that I was playing Fantasia on Greensleeves, I was so excited because when I first heard the song I was very very pleased. Thanks so much for posting this wonderful video

  • This song is a tribute to a prostitute! look it up!

  • beautiful.

  • Beautiful. Amazing talent, this guy really had amazing talent.

  • This is so beautiful in honor of fall - this lovely autumn walk to such a soothing beautiful song! It makes me appreciate the autumn season even more...

  • Bitter joy when your loved one leaves you for good... Anger & joy... Sadness... Yearning, and finally... You are over with it...

I don't recommend heavy drinking while listening these master pieces... You'll just break your heart...

  • i dont see where the joy comes into it.

  • Sorrow carries the seeds of joy, and vice versa. There is no pure joy without sorrow, and vice versa. They are fruits of the same vine; one always leads back to the other.

  • Beautiful, a real taste of England when i hear this.

  • In reply to this, it does present a taste a mood of England. I really visualise this song with the countryside.

  • Yes, i would as well.

  • I adore it!

  • I find this very relaxing. I think Vaughan Williams is brilliant for taking this medieval melody and making it sound so beautiful! I particularly enjoy the theme at 2:18

  • I've never heard Greensleeves in Melodic Minor before. V pretty.

  • I forgot how good this arrangement was!

A realy nice video but a shame it shows Autumn... this music always reminds me of Summer.

  • So peaceful...

    beautiful.

Why do people listen to Death Metal again?

  • Different moods :)

  • It's believed to date back to the 16th century, but possibly the melody was popular in the medieval period

  • Was für eine wunderschöne Melodie. Man kommt richtig ins träumen.

  • The Original Greensleeves Dates Back To The Tudors =)

I Heard Henry Was Ment To Have Composed It For Anne Boleyn.... But Dont Think He Did

I Love It.... =) I Love The Tudor period Though :)

    xx

  • It follows the Italian composition, which wasn't even introduced to England until after Henry VIII, plus other inconsistencies, so he didn't compose it.

  • There was no proof of that, and theres no name to that fact either.

This is an English piece through and through and wikipedias envying wont change that fact.

  • probably my all time favorite arrangement of this piece.

  • He didn't compose the theme itself, it's just his arrangement of a very old traditional folk tune.

  • I know this song and I know Ralph Vaughan Williams, but I never knew he was the one how composed this. It is beautiful..

  • i love this song beautifule

  • nice

  • The middle section of this work, since it was asked, is indeed an English folk song by the name of "Lovely Joan". I'm sure you can find much about it on the internet. I know the tune (great lyrics, too -somewhat racy) from a small book of folk songs collected and edited by Ralph Vaughan Williams, himself.

  • The tune of greensleeves became populare in the netherlands around the same time if i remember. I know i heared a dutch version of it somewhere on youtube.

  • Can someone send me this file too =)?

  • Can anybody help me here?

What is the second tune that Vaughn Williams built into this fantasia?

It has puzzled me for years,it is such a beautiful tune and sounds like an old Englash folksong.

    Any suggestions?

Thanks Trichoon for this lovely film.

  • Tricho, this is mean!

As if my longing for Jerusalem, England, My lionheart wasn't bad enough already!

  • Absolutely Brilliant

  • Makes me crave a Snickers for some reason. Hehe

  • you've made me crave a Snickers now

  • why?just asking(^_^)

  • haha, someone else commented 'Iyou've made me crave a snickers now' and I replied =]

  • wonderful

  • Where's there an MP3 of this? I wanna download it to my PSP. It's great.

  • I can send you the file if you like :)

  • Please do.

  • Okies, if you send me your e-mail address in a message then I'll send it asap :)

  • Check your inbox. I sent you a message with my email address listed.

  • i can send it to you

  • Beautiful music: )Thanks for sharing.

  • This was on the aeroplane flight i had to New Zealand, and imagine looking at that magical scenerey with this song. it was perfection. I have never had a moment as beautiful in my entire life. Thanks for uploading!!

  • very pretty!!

Have you ever heard the version by bernstein??

Thanks for the upload. Where is that?

  • This song is absolutely breathtaking. We're playing it in our school orchestra and I play principal flute, so I get the big solo- I'm so excited!

  • it is a beautiful tune good luck with your solo

  • thanks:-)

  • i would love to play this in band but then our band would mercilessly butcher it into an out of tune flutey mess... =/ I WANT A BETTER BAND!

anyways... i really like this version of the piece

  • i always have a headache but if i listen to this music, i don't have it anymore such..... i don't have any words for it

  • this is such gorgeously beautiful music, almost like a throwback to earlier, simpler times

  • Beautiful scenery, am I right in guessing that this somewhere in the West Country? The South West of England?

  • Very nice, thanks for doing us a service and uploading this.

  • thankyou you are very welcome .

  • This video is a bit silly but Greensleeves is always beautiful...

But the video was like: I was just expecting some guy in front of the camera shouting something strange...!

  • LOL..YOUR comment is "a bit silly"!!!

This is a traditional English Folk tune so the video is of a traditional English Country scene, this time set in Autumn or "The Fall"...whats silly about that,My Friend???:)

  • thankyou isleofskye .

  • really enjoyed this, great stuff.

  • thankyou .

  • Absolutely blooming briliant...thanks for sharing this piece with us..

  • once again thankyou my friend .

  • Very, very, nice. A+ camera work.

  • Nice video. Where was it filmed?

  • I love it

Good job on the video :)

  • thankyou Princess glad you liked it .

  • Thank you for posting the video! Vaughan Williams, Frederick Delius and Edward Elgar are the 3 musical pillars of English romanticism; yes, E. Elgar, too. Vaughan Williams brought the English folk tunes to the concert halls on the continent! I remember the first time I heard "Seventeen come Sunday" as a 12 year old boy in Germany under Hitler, when it was forbidden to listen to Radio London. It was in a transmission for the German youth by Hugh Carlton Green.

  • you are welcome it is beaytiful music although the Lark ascending is my all time favourite and how amazing that music in the end will be heard what ever the ban it even enhances it as with the bag pipes which were once banned in Scotland . trichoone .

  • trichoone:

Thank you very much for mentioning "The Lark Ascending". I had it on a CD, played by "The New Queen's Hall Orchestra" under Barry Wordsworth. Now I "stole" it from YouTube. Thank you for your work!
