Awesome cartoon, loved it since i was 4 and Heathcliff is funnier than Garfield despite i love the specials and TV show of Garfield. Cleo was one cute feline chick that i thought since i was 4
there are two versions of this theme. the other one starts, "cats and company have fu-un, playing pranks on everyone..." i think it may be the earlier of the two
The 80's was my childhood I saw all the cartoons you can name and some you've forgotten. Heathcliff was not good enough for Cable like Disney Channel. I remember this was on either channel 7, 5, or 9 in LA, I get the feeling this was on early in the morning before school as opposed to after school.
@TheAmericanEvita Wouldn't be on that channel anyway. It's more of a Fox Kids/Nickelodeon thing as it's not Disney although Fox Kids has been brought out by Disney.
"Heathcliff" is on Netflix Instant now. I might watch it just to see if it's as bad as I remember it being as a kid. Always loved the theme song, never liked the show itself. It was one of those rare types of shows that NOBODY liked (as least nobody I knew) that was ALWAYS on.
Maybe I'm talking out of my ass though. Maybe it's really the greatest thing ever and I just liked "The Super Mario Brothers Super Show" or "Mask" (oh dear God!) better.
@retroguy1976 lol you mustve watch like 40 episodes in a weekend or something lol. I think I'm up to like 8 on netflix and I started watching last week. Good show, good memories :) On a side not Heatchliff should dump Sonya, she's not loyal, lol.
When i was 7 i thought it was garfield 0_o but that was 6 years ago when i got a dvd in a cereal box....still watch it at 6 am every weekday! :+) now adays the morning/saturday cartoons are just horrible..not like the shows i grew up with b4 '05
@liwowoli Yeah, no lie; Heathcliff had more power, skill, clout and street cred, but Riff Raff came toppa TOPS in the Girlfriend area. Cleo is SMOKIN' for a cat
Damn right, isn't it amazing how they use to make cartoon catgirls in cartoons hot back then in the 80s and 90s? i mean you had her, Cheetara, M'ress on Star Trek TAS, Kitten Kaboodle on Talespin, Aishia Clan Clan on Outlaw Star, Felicia on Darkstalkers, Mirage on Aladdin, April O'Neil as a mutated catwoman, Jenny on Bucky O'Hare and even Catwoman in that one Batman TAS episode where she got transformed into a REAL cat-woman were all hot, agree?
The good thing about being a kid in the late 80's/early 90's was that there were different kinds of cartoon shows on all day, during the week and on weekends. Certain days you could watch a couple hours of cartoon shows on 1 channel, and then right after you could watch others on a different channel. You could go all day without being bored.
This bears a striking resemblance to Garfield. They're both orange, fat cats who originated in comic books. I personally think George Gately just copied Jim Davis - or is it the other way around?
@LemonCurdAddict1234 Actually, it is the other way around. Just do a quick Google search....you'll see that the Heathcliff comic strip debuted several years before Garfield.
@hamsterama the true story is this jim davis had a comic called gnorm gnat it ran for 7 years nothing was working a guy said the gags are great but bugs! nobody can relate to bugs! he switched the bug to a cat and now you know!
@LemonCurdAddict1234 I'm 38, and the first time when I saw Garfield when I was 8 or so, I thought that Garfield was Heathcliff!! Big differences: Heathcliff is much tougher, and unlike Garfield, Heathcliff has a girlfriend!
@abysmalatrocious another big difference between Heathcliff and Garfield: Heathcliff is very active and chases dogs, mice, and the dumb cats in the neighborhood and Garfield is fat and lazy
@LemonCurdAddict1234 jim davis had an comic called gnorm gnat it ran for 7 years nothing was working a guy said the gags are great but bugs! nobody can relate to bugs! he switched the bug to a cat and now you know! hope this helped! ;)
I watched this as a kid but I don't remember the theme song being so lame :( also, the cat with the white hat and walking stick reminds me of Pip from South Park
@shenloken2 i became a fan of catgirls thanks to Cleo, Cheetara and M'ress from Star Trek TAS when i was 4. Isn't it incredible yet funny how back in the 80s and 90s the got away with making sexy feline girls in cartoons? you had those 3 i mentioned plus Jenny on Bucky O'Hare, April O'Neil as a Catgirl, Callie Briggs, Mirage, Aishia Clan Clan, Felicia, Kit Mambo on Animalympics and even Selina Kyle as an ACTUAL Cat-Woman from that Batman TAS episode (Remember that?)
"Heathcliff, Heathcliff, no one should Terrify their neighborhood But Heathcliff just won't be undone Playing pranks on everyone "There's a race to be on top The competition doesn't stop Mixing with the ladies fair Being charming, debonair "The gang will reign supreme And no-one can deny-y-y-y They'll make 'em history And always have an alibi "So join in the jubilee, 'The cats are great', they'll all agree Find in each calamity The cats' superiority...
@NinjaGhostScorpion don't let the garfield movies ruin the cartoons and comics. i still read the garfield books. don't get me wrong, i do remember loving heathcliff (except the heathcliff and marmaduke cartoons. that series was pretty dry from what i remember) but i always preffered garfield.
@perhaps333 The lyrics are pretty awesome. When I began searching the Internet for my favorite childhood cartoons about 6 or 7 years ago, I looked up the Heathcliff lyrics and said "So THAT'S what they're saying!" :) I'm terrible when it comes to deciphering lyrics by ear, and these are probably some of the hardest for the untrained ear.
I only saw like one episode back then, but I never forgot that transforming 50's convertible, which as a G1 Transformers fan then and now, thought it was the bomb!
For me they both were great. Garfield had that special saturday morning appeal...especially with the garfield and friends segment with all the farm animals, but heathecliffe as a regular weekday show ruled.
Love Heathcliff, I'm 27 and this brings back fond memories. Come to think of it now, Heathcliff was your prototypical 80's New York Hobo. He's even courting a prostitute at the 42 second mark. What a guy!
