Genius: The only noun (and adjective) suitable for this man. At sixteen, I found Nick cave and thought he was the greatest. I am 34 now, and see no reason to revise that belief.
@Ciphercode without cohen you wouldn't have cave. nick's acknowledged countless time what a huge influence cohens music and words have had on him in addition to covering some of his songs. at times cohens later vocals and nick's baritone style sound quite similar too.
When he does a cover it is done in his own unique style and timbre, should be considered an art. To cover Cohen for example is not an easy task. And I enjoy both original and covers if done well.
bullshit. there's few bands that compare to the stooges hence why teenagers today are still getting into 40 year old albums. and unlike other artists in the 1980s, nick doesn't sound hideously dated.
I meant to say that 'borrowing' is not the term used by professional musicians or musicologists. That is psycho-babble. The adaptation of a cantus firmi is not a new phenomenon. It dates as far back as gregorian chant. What you hear in the chromatic chord structures of jazz was influenced by Opera. Italians invented musical notation and the norm to 'borrow' as you say, goes back hundreds of years.
Johnny you sound like that boring music guy who always has to talk about it rather than simply enjoy it. Nick Cave is 1 of the few icons from the 1980s whose music didn't date and he's still making great music in his 50s. I don't care about "cantus firmi" or italians inventing notation,
Well, I'm not a musicologist, nor am I good enough at any instrument to call myself a professional. I am just a fan of music. My point was that Cave was paying respect to his forebears. Just because I didn't remember or know the exact term does not make that point less valid.
He did the same thing a lot 2 albums later, with The Good Son- the first track's chorus was a 19th century Brazilian hymn (Fois Na Cruz), the title track comes from an old African-American folk song (Another Man Done Gone) and Witness Song takes its main hook from a gospel classic (Who Will Be A Witness). It's not really plagiarism so much as it's incorperating older styles of music into modern rock.
jaik, good attempt at trying by being negative getting some audience for your music, which did not exactly tickle my senses........anyway must agree that this is not the strongest of nick's undertaking's....no wonder, Sonny's perhaps too big even for Nick.....still you must agree he is an extremely talented chap.....this Nick.....
I usually don't like to wade into arguements, but I seriously doubt Sonny Boy Williamson would have any kind of problem with this song. Blues and jazz music are built on borrowing melodies and lyrics and making your own interpretations out of them (how many versions are there of Hey Joe?). Nick Cave has always paid an incredible amount of respect to the artists that came before him, and follows in their tradition of taking an old story and giving it a new, personal twist.
I will never forget once he played this song in Livorno (italy). It was for Let Love In tour. Last encore, with him alone on stage at the piano and crowd almost crying. Unforgettable.
Oasis just sprang to mind for their sheer arrongance. Don't get me wrong, I was born in 81 so I was quite young when Oasis were massive. I was a really big fan of them but their output after Be Here Now just slid downhill.
One thousand Mary's lured me, into gullies damp with clover, bird with crooked wing cast its wicked shadow over, a bauble moon did mock, and trinket stars did smile...your funeral...
It's poetry set to music. And the images it creates are so vivid. I can't think of another contemporary singer songwriter whose lyrics are as evocative. Maybe Leonard Cohen.
If you haven't seen it check out the film The Proposition, written by Nick Cave.
There's only one disappointing thing....As beautiful as this song is, he practically never plays anything from the amazing Your Funeral My Trial record anymore. Personally I dont think any of his ballads from the last 20 years come close to this, Sad Waters or Watching Alice etc.

He may be a good lyricist, but when it comes to live performances, Nick Cave sounds like your average drunk guy at a karaoke bar.
Damn that was awful.

This is pretty much perfection all right. What I wouldn't give for him to work on an album with Mark Lanegan.

All music passes its use by date. There is plenty of music I wouldn't listen to today. One is Nick cave or even Iggy Pop.

Great music is timeless and constantly relevant. Three prime examples of that are; Nick Cave, Tom Waits, and John Coltrane.

This is one of my favourite songs of Nick's. When you listen to poetry like this, then you hear something from Oasis, it's really a massive contrast.
I don't think we'll see an artist like this ever again.
leegsy 3 years ago 5
true but why pick on oasis? there's a lot worse popular music out there than them and there is something magical about definitely maybe.
though i do suppose once you get into artists like cave and cohen, everything else does sound boring.
