She's sharing herself for us all and bringing so much joy! Love her expressions as much as the song. Unbraced but beatiful smile. Real nose. The way she dips her head to acknowledge applause. Love it all!
I was cooking my son breakfast this morning when this song suddenly entered my mind out of nowhere. I began to sing it and my son said, "what the heck is that dad?" So, I began to explain that it was a song written by a gal named Melanie in the early 70's. Better yet, I bet it's on YouTube. So, I showed him this vid. I was 9 years old when my mother played this song over and over, driving me crazy. It was a lot more fun and less annoying this time around and brought back memories of shag carpet
I remember this the first time round and it sounds better now than it did then but listen to the Wurzels version of this song Brand New Combine Harvester for another good version and a bit of fun.
My momma played this on the record player 30 years ago. I just played it for my son on youtube... Thank you so much for this, it's so beautiful. Melanie is amazing.
All the music legends are in the 1900s the beatles, ac/dc, elvis presly, led zepplin, and this singer...the list goes on. what do we have now days? @JimsterYO That makes no sense. Of course there were more great arists in the 1900's than the 2000's because the 1900s were 100 years long. The 200s have only been around for 11 years. Give it time.
@JimsterYO IMO, claiming that there are no more great musicians or music "now days" is the first sign of impending fogeyhood. Actual musicians don't talk about younger musicians in this manner. Instead they keep their ears open and steal licks from them as readily as they steal from their peers. For instance, Johnny Cash singing Trent Reznor's "Hurt." Johnny heard possibilities in that song that I'm not sure even Trent realized were there. Open your ears.
Awww. Why does NOBODY EVER mention just how REALLY SEXY she is? She is, and always has been, the second love of my life.(but an extremely close second...) If only I could find the coffee shop owns now ....
s'pose it's better than listening to, "never been to me". lol... i just had to play this song tonight, while im drunk... hehe... glad i did tho... i suppose, HAHA
I like watching the audience and trying to figure out why they look like they just got off the bus from a 12 hour trip. Especially the guy at 1:17 who's face is right behind the head of her guitar. Were they promised a Beatles concert? They look like they would rather be anywhere but front row for this appearance?
My favorite Melanie album is the one that came after the album that contained this hit. It was called Stoneground Words (1972), and it still hasn't been released on CD yet! Only available on old used vinyl. I have a copy and it's a rare record. It also had no hits but showed her at her most creative.

@CharlesBarry Yes Chuckie, I kill or try to kill one deer a year for the freezer and enjoy the meat all year long. It reduces my carbon footprint by eliminating running my SUV motor waiting in Burger Kings drive thru for animal/fish meat that comes from far enough down the supply chain that you can eat freshly killed flesh without feeling hypocrytical. As are the meat by-products in you puppy food. In the spirit of your comment, Merry Christmas, and I hope your dog gets run over by a Prius.

And to think I remember the stories about this song banned on the radio (not in my town, thank goodness). Nice, NICE quality on both video & sound -- thanks very much for posting this! Thumbs way up!
Ahhh, Mel. I miss you more than the deserts miss the rain. I wish you'd let me see you, but I understand your pain. .I understand you're a diff person now, but I miss 17 yr old you.
This song came out when a girlfriend I knew since kindergarten and I were nine years old... It became our song. By the way we dated through high school, but unfortunately lost touch
this song came out right after i was born and remember my sister playing it when i was about 3. i'm sooo happy i found it after all this time. LOVE IT!!
This was the very first vinyl 45 I ever bought and I was 4 years old. I still love this song. This is the first time I've ever seen her video! Wow, wish I'd stayed in touch with her career! She's awesome!

Even that young, she knew how to sing according to the audience. Made the feminist statement, bluesed the second verse a little....
Now I want to Google what happened with her or where she is today.

And to think I remember the stories about this song banned on the radio (not in my town, thank goodness). Nice, NICE quality on both video & sound -- thanks very much for posting this! Thumbs way up!

Is this Top of the Pops or some other british show? I assume it's from 70 or 71.

This song came out when a girlfriend I knew since kindergarten and I were nine years old... It became our song. By the way we dated through high school, but unfortunately lost touch

Innocent song? On the surface, but this song created a lot of stir back then, supposedly because of the sexual innuendo's.
I remember some radio stations wouldn't even play it.
A local DJ pointed out the story behind it and I felt about the same way when I was a child and someone told me there was no Santa!
I still love the song though!

This was the very first vinyl 45 I ever bought and I was 4 years old. I still love this song. This is the first time I've ever seen her video! Wow, wish I'd stayed in touch with her career! She's awesome!

Combines innocence, grandeur, exquisite femaninity, power, sweetness and wonder. Smiles and Love is what happens when she sings.
