actually they sang oh what a savior before ernie was even a thought haha. i think with glen singing lead and the smooth arrangement of danny koker, mack tauton, and george in the background makes the ernie version just sound like a bunch of whoopin and hollerin and not true harmonic singing. just type in "oh what a savior glen payne" and then click on the one with the picture of the 1960s album cover and you'll see what i mean.
@LABOURSUPPORTER Most of them are, but without Ernie they don't sing "Oh, What A Savior!" and "He Made A Change", two great songs, on written by Ernie.
As much as I loved The Cathedrals, I never could understand why they did not, or would not take a drummer with them full time. Whoever that was playing back there, added so much more to the sound and overall delivery of that song. So much better than tracks or just piano and bass.
@drummerman31 I think the drummer there is Robbie Willis, who did play occasionally. I wish they had kept their live band from Travelin' Live that included Vic Clay on the guitar. That would have been a great band.
@ChristianEntertain They had no valid reason not to have a full time drummer with them. It would have made their sound 100 times better. I saw them in concert many times, and as good as they were, it always lacked that extra punch because they didn't have a full live band.
@GodsFavoriteBassPlyr i dont know brother the inspirations with archie watkins could at least give the cathedrals a run for their money,if not taking their money.haha
@Idrink2muchsunslop You know.. that's an excellent point.. cause I LOVE The Inspirations. Truly one of the tightest, under-recognized groups in all of Southern Gospel. ( I think Mike Holcomb grew into a pretty fine bass singer.. but I have to stop in awe at ole George! )
One thing that a lot of folks don't know is just how much time and money The Inspirations give away every year (in secret) to help rescue the perishing and to support their community - all of them Great Guys!
brings back alot of memories living in n.c. and counting the days they would come to town in winston-salem. ole george could make you comfortable, no matter the setting. some were crying, others jumping up and down, others clapping along, some smiling, and i'm talking about them at a funeral. RIP
This footage was taken from the annual All-Night Sing in Plant City, FL in the 80's. It was actually one of the few outdoor events the Cats worked. All of the groups would get off the Singing at Sea cruise in Miami that am and convoy to the football stadium in Plant City each year.
Where in the world did you get this? I have never seen a video of the Cats doing this song. I saw them in Huntington, WV in 1981, maybe. They walked out and did Jesus we just want to thank you, He's still working on me and then they did this song and tore the house down!! People were shouting all over the place. Then they did Roll away and George just sung the fire out of it. I will NEVER forget that night. Brings back memories. Loved it and hope you have more.
Thanks again, Dean, for sharing these things I have never seen or have any way of seeing. I appreciate it. Now, if only some company would release them on DVD. :-)
