SO PLEASED TO FIND THIS ON YOUTUBE. VERY SENTIMENTAL MEMORY. THIS IS AN UNKNOWN IF YOU'RE VAGUELY FAMILIAR WITH HIS MUSIC. THANX 4 THIS AWESOME MEMORY FROM MY CHILDHOOD<3

  • I had this on an old-fashioned reel of tape that had to be threaded into the pickup drum. I always heard the name as NYRIYA, a Cthulhu Mythosish name !!

  • One of my faviorite songs. From elementary school.

  • Can you post "The Bells Of St Mary's", "Running Wild", "She's Funny That Way ", "Under Paris Skies", "You You You", "Arrivederci, Roma", "London By Night", "Sweet Leilani", "Galway Bay ", or "The Coffee Song"? I saw them in a listing of Sam's songs and I want to know how they sound.

  • haha i was named after this song!! my parents just had to spell it like a drug......

  • MY NAME IS MARIAH ;DDDDDDDD

  • if i heard it in the morning ... it stays with me the whole day, thumbs up if you feel the same!

  • This song resonates in my spirit. Sam and this orchastra are in symbiosis. It takes a power greater than the singer and the musicians to come up with a masterpiece like this!

  • Now that is REALLY LOST if Not even GOD can find you..NO ONE can sing This song better than Sam..No One Back then..and NO One TOday..

  • Love Sam Cooke that Asian prostitute rolled him stole thousands of dollars from his clothes she tool and was in cahoots with the motel shank that shot him!

  • I would never think he'd make this song- sound so beautiful...but then I heard it and thought, of course--it's Sam Cooke. Anything he sings is beautiful. Pure.

  • Dear God in Heaven, That Voice!!!!

  • Sam is the most.

When he was growin up, he learned that if you cant physically sing loud enough, just make sure the audience understands every word you say. He still had that sweet southern accent, but he had great pronunciation techniques. Its a subtle thing, but I appreciate it.

  • Amazing Sam song.Have you any others from the cooke's tour album? In fact any Sam cut that you can't get on cd.

  • my name is mariah (: and this is the best version i've heard :D

  • A beautiful song by an incredible artist. Thanks for uploading! :)

  • My name is Mariah <3

  • A timeless song by sam cooke.

  • A beautiful song by sam cooke.

  • A beautiful song.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG,! On reason is because my name is Marriah(with 2r's) second, maybe people will see just because that's may name I'm not named after mariah carey lol , especially since she's only 8yrs older then me haha

  • my name is mariah its true this makes me realy happy and he pronounces it right

  • Soooo smooth and soo Sammy

  • thats cool my name means the wind or the wind means mariah

  • Anybody ever hear of "Joe & Eddie"? Two black dudes that sang songs like this in the 50s and 60s. My dad used to have their records. When they sang they sounded like 6 people. I have looked online for them at playlist and stuff but I cant find anything. Any suggestions out there?

  • Oh, but I love this song. Cooke's version is my absolute favorite. Does anyone know where I can buy just this song/version?

  • @bozophelia So no one else has

  • people totally sing this to me all the time . . . this is a great version!

  • Oh thats my Name :))

    -Mariah (.:MIMZ.:)

  • i wonder if mariah carey was named after this song.

  • @msraymond

    Yeah she was actually.

  • @msraymond yes she was

  • @msraymond Yes Mariah Carey was named after this song from Paint Your Wagon. That's why I would call any movie made of Mariah Carey's life "THEY CALL THE WIND MARIAH"

  • Thanks for this song trevycoley83 Sam's music brings tears to my eyes.

  • The proper spelling of this classic is Maria.

  • Neva heard this one from the GREATEST of all-time... it's so cleverly written. The personification is just what makes this such an endearin treasure... "They Call The Wind Mariah". Only Sam Cooke vocalization can make the song this beautiful... RIP Sam Cooke.

  • Great music and I found it today

  • Everybody on youtube this is Vakano and my new Video

    Simply Put (Um Bluesing)...

  • This performance deserves way more that just 5 stars

  • Such effortlessly beautiful singing, only Marvin comes anywhere near him. The sound of his voice on the line 'not even god can find me' is just sublime.

  • FRANKIE LANE FRANKIE LANE

  • @jor99912 At least spell it right, guy

  • @RyanSchell8String English Translation??

  • @jor99912 Laine

  • This is Country & Western! More Western!

Many today have no ear, mentioning Elvis with this man! They had really "Great Singers, Whom featured this style of music!

    VAUGHN MONROE and

JACKIE LANE were my favorites! Check them both out on GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY! i cry i CRY!

  • It has some country western treatments, but it is a show tune from Broadway

  • Now if American Idol can produce someone white or black that can sound like this..I will return to watching it..he is singing so effortless. You cant even hear him breathe..what control..what tone..Only Sam Cooke..not even Elvis or Michael Jackson could out sing this man. and they both were the Kings..of Rock n Roll and Pop..Sam had them both beat..

  • tho it would be great if i could share this masterpiece with my friends on facebook :)

  • feel free to!just copy the address above and paste it to your profile.thanks for commenting.

  • @trevycoley83 my name is mariah yay a song about me

  • @deenclassic , you can share it with them, I do all the time. While the video plays, go to the facebook link right below playlist and flag. There you can share with your facebook friends.

  • sam sam sam! man we don't have singers like these anymore. all the good ones are gone. nowadays u really gadda dig deep to find good music. thanks for the post trevycoley83 :)

  • This guy has the voice that only comes along once in lifetime, I have every song Sam ever released I listen to him everyday and never fail to blown away with his voice

  • the best singer sam cook

  • Excellent version of the song

  • The best version

  • Sam's name is synonymous with vocal honesty and sincerity. His style of soul was not just pain, but hope and love.

  • @smix86 I think great soul singing is just that, honest and sincere.

  • I'm not crazy about this pop/swing/jazz version, but Sam's voice is gorgeous, as it always was.

  • I have loved Sam Cook all my life, I am 57 and you tube and really brought back a lot of memories for me. I have a new granddaughter and we play this song for her almost everyday to put her to sleep. Her name is Moriah

  • its so amazing that i love him and his music so much and to then hear a song with him singing my name. ahhh.

  • @redell09 haha that would be cool, enjoy

  • i love this song because... MY NAME IS MORIAH!!!!

  • dam i remember this from when i was a little kid. im only 19 but i guess i was taught right in music...

  • Anyone know where I can buy the mp3 for this song, I can't find it anywhere =(

  • Firefox has a plugin to download YouTubes. Just Convert the FLV with Format Factory (freeware).

  • I can't wait for my brother to return all my soul albums.

  • what a great song, and sam cooke did a really good version of it. although i tend like the movie version better.

  • did u guys knw that mariah carey was named after this song???

  • It's a shame he was murdered

  • It was a bit more complicated than "murder." Did you ever read the full story?

  • sam cooke ....a first class singer...!

  • hehe :-)

  • I have the original LP and it's still sounding formidable !!!

  • how can i get this???

  • It is on an old old album by Sam Cooke called "The Man." very rare. I lost my copy in a house fire.

  • Thats My Name Hehe'

  • Maybe someday we will get back to music.sing it sam, sing it sam.

  • Why oh Why cant American Idol with all the singers that auditions..not ONE sounds anywhere close to this man. this is really sad. this is not a hard song to sing as i am a singer myself..with the right vocals similar to Sam or nice vocal control..that Has got to be another set of pipes that sound some where close to this man. so far, no one I have heard and I been listening to singers since Elvis. whom couldnt even Out sing Sam. not Luther Vandross or Marvin Gaye both influenced by Sam..

  • Listen to Sam sing Mona Lisa, Danny Boy or Lucky Old Sun....He was soooo gifted, until he could sing a song and it sound so beautifully simple...until it sounds as though anyone, you or I could sing it just like he does .....but alas it's not to be....for we are mere mortal men...lol....Cooke

  • Yeah - I'm a big Sam Cooke fan, too, but I'm not sure I put him ahead of Jackie Wilson. Very different styles, I know, so it's hard to compare, but ...

    larrycancooke2,

I love your comment that he could make a song so "beautifully simple...until it sounds as though anyone, you or I could sing it just like he does". Bing Crosby had a similar gift - such apparent effortlessness. Not many others ... Dinah Washington and Doris Day, maybe. Nat King Cole and Sammy Davis, Jr., but none like Sam!

  • @grahamts5 Yes..I agree I put him ahead of Jackie..but Jackie could out dance and out perform him on stage and was much more exciting to look at...i guess thats why they called Jackie Mr Excitement. Sam was the King of ballet Soul.

  • He makes a real effort to pronounce all the words and not slur.

  • i know

  • Ironically, my name is Muriah, and I'm particularly phobic about tornadoes....

  • Comment removed

  • This guy sings it better than the others on youtube but, not as good as the guy on Paint Your Wagon. he just does an amazing job and one day I will find out who he is and play it over and over again.

  • it's Harve Presnell in the movie, and I've looked, but I can't find it on Youtube. Shame.

  • my name's Mariah!!! i luv this song

  • John Todd, former Illuminati witch, explains that Mariah means Lucifer in wicca and represents the power of the wind

    see IDK1Bnbd1eI

  • Wow! I didn't know Sam Cooke sang that!

    He did a great job!!

  • beautiful song, It made me want to name my daughter Mariah. When I have a daughter that will definitely be one of the name choices.

  • This song is where i got my name from :)

  • Thanks for uploading. This song doesnt deserve to be forgotten. Great version by Sam. Cheers! -ato.

  • one of his best.. looking for bali high and faraway places by him too.. all were on the same album

  • We had that LP when I was a lad. My dad still has it. Class.Listening it tonight takes me back to 1976. Sam Cooke was/& still is the greatest voice I've ever heard. Colour of skin/politics/history who gives a shite? We can't change it. But we can always love quality. Cheers Sam lad!

  • I don't even know how to find this version by Ed Ames. Just heard it once on TV on the Ed Sullivan show. It was spectacular...gave me chills. Not to be putting down Sam's version, which is also great. It's a wonderful song.

  • Ed Ames had the best version.

  • Upload it!

  • Forgot to mention: This is the Ed Ames version:風のことをマリアと呼ぶ; Cheers!

  • Thanks dude, much appreciated. :-)

Having said that, probably prefer this version - not too many people can sing better than Sam Cooke, that's for sure.

  • Wow, you're fast. Sure, Sam is one of the best singers ever, sadly he ended so tragicly.

BTW both versions are great; Ed Ames sings just in a total different style, amazing too.

Not comparable, just great music. Cheers!

  • He swings it! Great!

  • wow i actually like this song. i thought that i would hate it because my name is mariah and every time somebody meets me they feel like they need to sing this song to me.

  • lmao! This joint is pretty cool in contrast to the other versions that have been recorded. I'm glad that you liked it.

  • Try having your name be Jenny and have the song by Tommy and Two tones sing Jenny, Jenny I got your number .. I want to make you mine" Wish I had a nickel for everytime it was mentioned or sang to me ... I'd b rich.

  • haha that's true. it sucks to have your name in a song, because people think they're the first person to ever realize that, when in reality you've heard the song a billion times.

  • I agree with Wesque. Everything he touched was magical. Very few like him. Maybe Harry Belafonte.

  • I first heard Sam over 40 years ago. And he still remains my favorite singer of all-time. What a singer, songwriter, performer, producer, and, what's been overlooked, what a businessman! Had he lived he would have been unstoppable.

  • Damn, this guy's voice gets me every time. This is a great song, yet this is by far the best version I've heard. What a talent! What a tragic end! And with Obama's victory how much more poignant his "A Change is Gonna Come" seems now.

  • My daughter is 31 years old and her name is Mariah. I can tell you for sure she has never heard this song. I wish I could send it to her, but alas, Mariah has no computer. She is in Dallas doing God knows what. I lover her though and ask for prayers on her behalf, she's a precious lamb.

  • That's very touching...I wish she could hear this song.Let me know if I can help...be blessed

    Much Love,

    Trev

  • Thank you sweetness....Next chance I get, before I'm called home, I am going to make sure she gets my electronics; laptop, televisions, etc...She works hard but is in a bad cycle, no drugs though 'Thank You Jesus' but she undermines her own value. I've even used my vast HR know how to get her an interview from way out here on the west coast, sight unseen, but she refuses to be caught up in the work-a-day-world.

  • I'm praying for you and your family...you've touched me....Cooke

  • Thank you, on days when I feel God's presence and His guiding hand more than usual I know it is because prayer was offered up on my behalf. Don't know who, where, or when but Thank You and prayers backatcha for whatever blessing, need, or praise you believe or desire. The awesomeness of Sam Cooke and those who follow with equal and greater talent is testimony for all. Have A Great Life, Enjoy~

  • gee I wish my momma had connects like that. She'll get it together though.Keep the faith.

  • What city are you in? I may be able to pull a thread or two.

  • Is that what you paid? No, let me rephrase, is that what you needed? As I said, she is drug-free, doing God knows what. Thanks for the info, now I know she is alive and well.

  • And making money! Even if it's only $2.

  • never heard this song before, but as with every sam cooke song, i always love it the first time i hear it! =P

  • I have not heard this song in years

  • to a song of course (minds think fast;))

  • Every song I've listened to performed by mr. Cooke have been amazing. This due to the fact that he is one of the greatest singers of all time. He def is my favourite too.

  • Never really listened to this song before...Glad I did so now...Loved it...Beautiful voice as always...

  • I remember this song,, I always loved it. Thanks for the memories.

    John David

  • I have never heard this song before. It is simply wonderful! thank you for posting. what album is this from?
