Usually always get tekan until damn jialat before they believe you. It is common practice among new recruits to keep trying to get exempted by hook or by crook, so some officers have the mindset that everyone wants to chao keng. If your officer is compassionate and believes you, then good. If not, just have to tahan lor.

I think the rationale is that if officers openly believe in "unscientific" things, it may create a superstitious culture in army. No country can have an army afraid of ghosts, can't fight a war.
