I'm guessing he was driven to a crazed adrenaline powered frenzy by the dreary and tedious work of working an artillery piece and after bayoneting a man at 20mph and routing an entire enemy group he awoke from his frenzied hulk like state and realized he had just taken a mans life which horrified him and promptly drove him to abandon the battlefield, sobbing undoubtedly all the while.

He is the best artillary officer ever clearly he was tired of just standing by the cannona all day yelling "fire" "round shot" and the infantry get all the action and also the cavalry so he wants to be a generaland get a medal i guess he thinks running into militia should do the trick and stabbing one
