No need to disconnect any cables If you look under / behind the drive unit you will see why this makes sense to put it in F - Just make sure the gear / shift dog is inthe same position when you re-install it.
do i have to worry about removing the shift cable at the motor to prevent damage to it? also in this removal process how do i know that the shifting is still in time when reinstalling
I have the whole outdrive off with the Gimbal housing connected still. On the gear linkage,,, Should the cable shaft be fully in or fully extended to be in forward? Thanks!

Use the throttle lever in the boat to shift it.
