I miss Safin. His very high tennis IQ technique, his great backhand and his 'very emotional' love for the game.Even his 'sporstmanship' is worth considering; he may be hot-headed at times but after every game he shows respect! Can you not consider making a comeback!Tennis misses you!
Delpo is the future Safin. He has a strong game now, but he will have injuries that stop him from winning titles. Both are power hitters too. Aren't they similar?
@FlameJohn Personality wise they are in completely different worlds. Stroke production is very different and tactically very different. Just because they are both very tall guys who are both powerful doesn't mean they play similarly.
@MaratSafinVideos Great point. For one thing, Marat is physically built different from JM- he has a thicker frame- so how they move around and hit the ball is going to vary. As well, Marat is a more polished player and moves more fluidly around the court- case in point: he comes to net with ease and seems comfortable there. DelPo, on the other hand, is a more like a back-court scrambler- nothing wrong with that- who likes to outhustle his opponent.
@FlameJohn Yes, at face value, they seem alike but if you take a closer look at their games you will see the difference- mainly that Marat hits a heavier ball (ie-more topspin) and is more of an all-court player. Both have great serves and can dictate from the backcourt.
@Ignozi Not true. He said after his match against Rochus that his wrist feels fine. He withdrew from Shanghai for other reasons.
He's 6'6'', of course he's going to get injured, all Ectomorphs do, look at Safin, Ivanisevic, Philippoussis but to say he can't seem to keep himself fit is an inaccurate description of his career thus far.
@MaratSafinVideos For the sake of his career, I hope you're right. I don't want to see him sit out half the year because of a bad knee or wrist. I enjoy watching him play, but it will take some tournaments to get him back on track.
@Ignozi I think he'll be fine the Australian Open. His situation is similar to that of Safin in 2003, when he was hampered by a wrist injury throughout the year. He came to the Hopman Cup and AO 04 in great form. I've no doubt Del Potro will regain his top form, as it's not an injury that will affect him after it has healed unlike a hip or knee injury.
@MaratSafinVideos That sounds reasonable. He has a strong head on him and doesn't seem vulnerable to choking as we saw in his comeback against Fed last year. Just needs to keep himself physically healthy. He has the shots to win slams.
@athull08 Actually, Santoro unretired for one more tournament - a record he's done, playing for 40 years in GS's, I think. He played this year's AO (WC, his 70th GS), only to lose at the first round. He might be playing the French too, who knows...
Oh yeah, you're right. But it couldn't be 40 years, considering he's only 37! It was to have played in Grand Slams in 4 different decades (80s, 90, 00, 10s). And also, to have played in 70 Grand slams. I'm sure he really is retired now.
He played really well I thought, considering how crappy he played throughout the year and considering it was his last career match. No shame in losing to Del Potro at that stage. He could have easily lost in the first round. He was down something like 0-40, triple match point on his serve and he came back to win in the tiebreak, really nice to see him fighting it out in his last tournament. Shame he didn't show that earlier in the year, he might still have ended top 20 and still be playing.
Safin Best two handed backhand ever

They could have chosen a better song for after the match... Safin was getting somewhat emotional and the music was just... awkward -_-

I miss both of them. Marat will never return and Delpo just can't seem to keep himself healthy.

@Ignozi He's only had one serious injury. Bit of an exaggeration.

@MaratSafinVideos He came back in Thailand only to find out he's not fully recovered. I hope it doesn't become a pattern with him getting injured.

He was playing slams for 21 years. It was across four decades, rather than 40 years.
