3:16 is one of the most motivational things ive ever seen. Not only did Lasse Viren motivate himself to get gold, he motivated someone else to run RIGHT behind him to the silver medal. wow. epic.
@korbendallas66. Listasi on virheellinen; siihen kuuluisi Anders Gärderud. Suomellakaan vastaava lista ei ole pitkä. Siihen kuuluu Viren ja Vasala, sikäli kun 1500m lasketaan pitkäksi matkaksi. Eikä listan pitenemisestä näytä olevan toivoa.
@NFLmarco the "Pre" as you like to call him, was WAY overrated. the PRE would have got his ASS kicked against Kenesia Bekele , the "PRE" would have lost by 1 minute in ANY race.
the "PRE" did have American records, but everyone SUCKED at that time. I would have loved to seen more of the "PRE" getting his ASS kicked with the runners of today.
@Velvet4U Pre wasn't overrated, but he was only great on a world level at 5km. Against today's runners, there's no comparison to any runners from back then. Pre was only 21 years old when he ran the 1972 Olympics, and he had a very good chance at taking gold in 1976, if not for his death the previous year. Also, track was in addition to having a job. He was the most dominant middle dist. runner in USA at his time&one of the world's best. But, it was his heart and determination that ppl loved.
And this is not to mention that blood doping's effects last less than a month; six weeks before the games, Viren ran a 13:19, and this is not to mention over 20 races at the highest stages in 1972, spread throughout a period far longer than the effects of blood doping lasts.
@YiftertheShifter1 It is now meaning to talk about blood dope or something. It´s about 30- 40 years ago. The world was different. No one talked about these things in 1972. I think the long distant runners need a perfect mental train. When the men are equal the result is : What is your attitude ? You run 27.00 or 29.00.
The Soviet and the Eastern Block used so much dope those days, it´s no use to
In the months leading to the Munich games, Viren and his coach did a test to show how fit he was: Viren would run 20 repetitions of 200m and after each interval they would record his heartrate. In June, he averaged 30 seconds, 190 BPM. In July, he averaged 29.3 and 186. In August, after setting a world record over two miles, he averaged 27.2 and 172. So, not only was he getting faster, but his heart was much more at ease.
One of blood doping's negative side effects is that the increased red blood cell content causes blood to become thicker, leading to atherosclerosis and eventual heart attacks. One can conclude that the heart would be working harder. If Viren was blood doping at the Olympics as people say he was, why was his heart getting more relaxed coming close to the games? All the more proof that people who make this accusation have no clue of what they're talking about.
@YiftertheShifter1 atherosclerosis? that is just nonsense. blood doping has nothing to do with atherosclerosis. blood can become too thick, but if that happens then the blood doper is doing it wrong.
Just amazing how he trips in the middle of a race, and yet he still won in a WR time. I tripped at the start of a mile race, and tried to get back and win, but couldn't. Lasse Viren is my hero.
"hyvä lasse" :D , jos jotain tollasta tapahtuisi nykyään niin räjähtäisin kyllä aivan totaalisesti tuolla selostuskopissa. No hyvinhän tääkin selostaja veti.
I think we can all make a strong case for Viren being the greatest Olympic runner in history. Though you mention Nurmi, let us not forget that five of his nine gold medals were won in events that are now defunct; as for Emil Zapotek... well, first of all you have to qualify for the Olympic Marathon, so your first Marathon can't come in the Olympic games, and second his winning time was 10 minutes slower than Viren's fifth place finish. Viren and his double double: unparalleled.
Thanks for your good points, perhaps though different eras and epochs cannot be compared. For example, the food and preparation work in Nurmi-Zatopek era was very different from Viren era, not to mention the "modern" runners...but there was definitely some CHARISMA or something that most contemporary runners, even if they are faster than the ancients, simply lack. I mean all of these guys had some huge charisma, Viren, Abebe Bikila, Nurmi, Zatopek...
Yeah, I do agree, especially after going to the Paavo Nurmi website yesterday that this guy's charisma is... well, hard to explain for those who simply haven't lived in his era (myself included). Still I believe that Viren, given that he peaks exactly at the Olympic games and runs the most spectacular races there, takes the crown.
Tried it... I couldn't really catch up to the guy in front of me, but I got close between 500 and 400, but my finishing speed isn't the greatest. Try again, I guess...
Well, at least you don't accuse only Viren, which is a healthy apptoach. HOW on earth is ONLY ONE man accused for doping. I guess he was simply so GOOD!
Yes, Prefontane did blood dope, but that is no reason to trample on his grave. His 4th place was outstanding, even if he was taking illegal performance enhancing drugs.

in a real life. The condition they really had !
10000 metres : 1. Viren 2. Bedford 3. Puttemans 4. Gammoudi 5. Yifter
