Great rendition of Spain! Music is about expression. I like Brad's expression. Nothing wrong with chops and technique as long it is done with taste. I like the clip. Well done Brad. Keep up the good work.
Never understood how Jazz players can comment on flashiness, too many notes etc...What about Be-bop? That's wankerish.
This however speaks volumes musically, it's not flashy at all, its one guy playing bass and melody, just like a pianist...which then means Pianists must also be flashy and wankerish. :-/
it's about swing.. feel.. space... the changes... truly original statements... trust me, tapping triads and hitting random notes in a scale is different from exerting tasteful tensions yet still hitting every chord on the spot...
the guy here's great.. just not a fan anymore of 2-handed tapped standard arpeggios (doesnt rlly put any tension on the chord), and simple funk octave slaps. it sounds fine; im just not a fan of it so i stated my opinion.. just to be harassed.. lol
it's still the same principle behind the hate for metal guitarists; one too many notes that do not make a statement. i can't feel the musical correlation here for myself, but that shouldn't undermine the enjoyment it gives to others. however, to dismiss a statement as one of a "jazz snob"s is to make one's performance impervious to criticism =P
the flashiness translates to redundancy to me, but if this is truly amazing to other people, then that gives this cover value and meaning
@ragglefraggle09 hmmm thats a funny comment...because if you knew anything about Chick Corea you would know he plays fusion jazz which incorporates rock and funk with jazz...so stop talking about shit you don't know and just enjoy the music
is your comment actually serious? lol... do you really think that way about jazz & fusion? i used to think that too.. when i was 16; i urge you to listen to more music, my friend... you need to get a better grasp of the topic before you insult somebody!
it's important to tell the difference from attacks and constructive criticism instead of being close-minded and egotistic about your own abilities
@ragglefraggle09 i'm closed-minded? listen to yourself lol.......and what is fusion? please educate me Mr. know-it-all this should be good....fusion means to fuse different styles together I've been playing music for over 20 years and am very well educated and I don't know where you got the idea that i'm egoistical for sticking up for someone else's music because you're the one coming off egotistical thinking you're the leading authority of jazz genre
i really don't state much until people started insulting me; im just defending my tastes with simple logic, not being a music authority..
also the synthesis of music isn't always as easy as 1+2. jazz fusion contains rock and other inspirations but you're missing the point when you seem to be dismissing the jazz base to prove me "wrong"
i care not about the achievements you're showing off... just about you getting off my leg... lol
Like it... not because of "ZOMG he's awesome, so fast" but because the song is great and sounds good on bass. Played in on the sax back in the day, couldn't do it on bass although I daresay I'm better at bass than sax.
I play guitar too and I don't think that the bass sucks at all, actually I think it's an awesome instrument just as much as the guitar is. The point is that most of the BASS PLAYERS sucks, if there'd more good bassists or virtuous bassists (like this guy) the bass would be much more respected instrument.
Guitarists would recognize this as Flamenco inspired bass playing. I think it is brilliant and challenge those who are being derisive to put up or shut up. Bravo, amigo, Buen Hecho.
this is really impressive with how he plays the lines as well as the melody but i don't like the tone of the slap or tap in jazz either, especially in this song. this requires a much rounder tone. but thats just me
Open minded? I think you've misunderstood me. What I was implying was that a lot of peoplego by the -ironic- "3000 BPM, Exaggerated Tapping, Overuse of technique, excess of anything" narrow-minded way of thinking.
Maybe in this video, the player does not overdo it as much as others, but I believe he still does. I'm not against having a wealth of technique in a song, but some people just cram things just because it's complex, and although It doesn't sound very good, people will praise him/her.
I think the trick is, if it were on a cd, would you believe that two people were playing bass? I think most people with fingertapping don't think about that.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this stuff just makes me mad. I think victor wooten is the only person who can do this really clean. Just cause you can hit the fret with your finger and sound comes out doesn't mean it has good tone or soul. and it definitely doesn't mean that a jazz tune like this deserves slap from a corvette standard.

You have to be more open minded. Most of this video was just an awesome groove. The intro tapping part was cool, you have to admit that.
I like all types of music and I thought this sounded so great, it's different from most of the stuff I've heard.
