it was a under ground levi to keep water off that part of the island as ships past the water filled up the shafts once the water came up the surfice it ran out on each side of the island, spilling it back into the ocean, also at high tide
Why not build dams around the water tunnels, pump out any remaining water, use drills and excavation machines to get rid of the blocking layers and ta-da you find the "treasure". Its 2011 for fuck sake. Why hasnt the "treasure" or the bottom been reached yet?
@EasyEs Very cool! I was in Nova Scotia a couple years ago as a geology student, and I tried to get some info on maybe visiting Oak Island, but no dice: it's private property.
Personally, I think the pit is a natural sinkhole. The strata of islands in Mahone are mostly limestone and gypsum/anhydrite...soluble rocks that dissolve away in water, leaving caverns.
Lots and lots of cave-ins are reported there, including one on Oak Island itself that swallowed a herd of cows.
Then, when they finally get to the bottom of it, they find a chest. And in the chest, they find a book. And the book is titled "Digging Really Deep Wells For Dummies"
Bottom Loine is somebody went to one HE## of alot of trouble to hide something...
My guess it's PRICELESS and took engineers hmmm?FREE MASONS most are big Engineers huh?? well so am I and I say digg theo whole Island up and coffer dam the whole thing literally go layer by layer till that lost thing The Ark is found.
@1980cossie that would be a good idea. But easier said then done. One of the shafts comes up to the beach area (Smiths Cove), it breaks off into 5 separate 'finger' shafts which come up close to the surface of the beach. Each of these end at so called 'box drains'. You would have to block all 5 of those. Or dig down deep enough to find where they intersect. Then you would have to duplicate that on the other shafts. Either way ALOT of work. But with today's technology it can be done.
The amazing construction of the pit and for WHEN it was built ALONE are reason enough to just really get in there with a proper corps of engineering crew and see once and for all what the hell is down there. It's so confounding!
THANK YOU beautystruck for posting this and others of the in search of....series. i too grew up watching this show. have often thought of this particular episode, thanks for allowing me to enjoy it again.
For me, the mystery has finally been solved! "I finally finished what I started by in the late 70's as a kid." I didn't understand it then, but thanks to you, I understand it perfectly now. Thank you very much for posting this ISO episode. It meant a great deal for me. Thanks again.
Reminds me of the Three Stooges when they dig so deep they can't get out of the hole.

@CristinaFernandez Yeah, I love how this series is so cool, that even though it's "science" is spurious at best, I still love it.

I saw this for the first time in school in 1991.
It is such an interesting story and piece of history.
Somebody was smart to set the treasure barriers, They ultimately made this story what it is.

When they poured red paint/die down the shaft it came out in three places in the sea, why not plug these three places somehow or can't it be done?
