would it be possible to take the two grommets at the front corners (where the door is) and tie them to the opposite middle grommets on the sides of the tarp and create a sort of flap door to the shelter?
So... freaking... easy. Genius! There's even enough room in there for a disco ball & my girlfriend's big ass! I can't wait to do a Brokeback Dutch oven on her! It's gonna be SICK! Thanks again Will!
@wedigclassics Since this thing is so freaking simple, there has to be SOME way to over complicate it. How about throwing a casualty blanket or solar blanket down, underneath it? Then it would be perfect!
Good to know for the first TARP SURFING 24 hour endurance contest planned for May 2011. So the Helgs can snooze (tarp-nap).
All that will be allowed on the slab secret location are the TarpaQ Teams,Tarps, Rides, Experienced Tow Dogs, Registered Tarparazzi, Porta toilets & H20, Jury of judges, No Snobtarpos Allow!
Many thanks for this video. Now I can use any old tarp plus any wooden pole I can cut anywhere and set everything up according to your fine instructions.
@brinksbury I just watched another video with the same set-up. The guy said tucking the back corners in will give you an area to store gear off the ground incase it has rained/wet. Makes sense, which if you have a ground cover, it could overlap the tucked in corners for extra protection
@hamptonify shut up you cant get free or discounted tickets to things like i can. you probably don't go camping everymonth. you need to stop cyber bulling
24 Ounces?! There are tents (Real bath tub, bug proof tents) lighter than that, hell there are a couple 2 man tents almost that weight (Gossamer gear and TarpTent to list a couple).
get a rei minimelist bivy. only adds 15 oz to your pack, eliminates bug probs and if it rains everything but the pace area is water proof. theres a no-seeum mesh at the face. it doesnt add warmth, so its not too hot. used mine last night and not a single skeeter bite. Hate those thiongs! oh yeah, their about $85. realy cool
I learned something new with pinning the back stakes first but not on the back corners. Then using those as reference to position the front stakes. Thanks!
hmm.. on second thought think ill keep my dome tent, these tarp tent rigs cant keep mosquitos and other creepy crawly bugs off of you when in the woods but a dome tents screens can protect against them, a tarp like this would require a bug-net plus a sleeping bag to be comfortable in the elements, nice set-up though. =]
Awesome... I feel a bit foolish now since i bought a small dome tent 2 weeks ago just to keep the rain off me out in the woods, i could of kept my $38 bucks and bought a 6 dollar tarp they had there and used an old piece of tubing that is sitting in the basement as a tent pole, But i wasnt thinking in *those terms* when i bought the tent, it was an impulse buy, think ill return it! =]
Ive done that a few times on cold windy nights, seemed the best idea at the time but always regreted it next day when i woke up cold and wet because of condensation.
if its windy wet or cold u can make a small triangular tube with tarp on all sides + ground, block an end with whetevers available, crawl inside and block the other end behind you.
that is the simplest, fastest and most effective way ive ever seen a shelter put up. probably he most cost effective too. this is my new set up for ground shelter. THANKS!
I experimented with tarps but just didn't get the point. You have to be very careful with your siting to keep water from running onto your groundsheet and getting you wet, or blowing in through the front opening and getting you wet. Probably you want to use a bivvy sack with this to have any chance of staying dry in the rain, at which point you might as well buy a tent because you're up to the same weight as something like a Eureka Zeus single-wall tent.
the trekking pole could also be a fairly straight stick. same with the stakes

thsoe two corners are gonna be flapping around on a windy day unless you put weight on em.
Might as well add 2 more stakes to stop the flapping and increase room under your tarp.

If i glue 2 tarps together would one side work well as a floor in that setup?
cementbrains 3 years ago
don't glue them. That would be a waste. Just use one as a ground cloth and leave it unglued.

looks like a good storm will blow the whole thing over after I get bit by all the bugs. I rather carry a wedge tent with a full floor.
