If you finger-spell D E L I L A H, it looks sloppy and it would be rushed. And if an interpreter finger-spelled names at a concert, the Deaf people would probably not be able to read it.

@Kitty: Lots of the signs he used isn't acceptable ASL where I live (example, his translation of "Oh, its what you do to me"), but what is acceptable ASL change from one part of the country to another. ASL is a living language of generally accepted linguistic conventions just like spoken English is. I'd say this boy did a pretty good job.

actually for all of you guys saying that he was signing English not ASL you are wrong. He is indeed signing it in ASL.

Actually, for the most part, ASL has French roots. of course it was adjusted to the American language when they first brought it over here but FSL and ASL are still similar. it almost doesn't come from English at all. There is what they call signed English, but most true ASL signers don't use it. Signed English and ASL are so very different. ASL is literally its own language. It has it's own grammar rules, format and organization. It is nothing like English.

I think he did a great job. It really was more asl then signed english. and like people have said- it is a class, meaning he is still learning, chill. besides- some songs are hard to really translate into asl because the correct asl doesn't always have enough signs to fill the beats- so you do what you can- including adding a little english in there to fill spaces. it is totally okay in most informal situations.

I don't know why people think it is.

This is a "Signed Exact English" interpretation of the song. For example, in the beginning, "What's it like in N.Y. City..." you sign the actual word "like", which is incorrect. That sign "like" means attracted to.

the whole verbal interpretation is not what you are signing. Songs use multiple idiomatic expressions.

You should know this, being an ASL 2 student in high school.
