The bottom line is this. Duke is an elitist school that fits ideals rather than success. Connecticut produces winners, and that is evidenced by their success in the N.B.A. Keep in mind that they have more professional basketball players in the N.B.A. and overseas than any other school by far. Duke fan here. First, you are way off about GT. Uconn did not kill GT, do you consider a 9 point Uconn win "killing" them? You guys beat them. And while I do think Duke would have won the game, you are far underestimating how good GT was that year. GT beat Duke AT Cameron Indoor Stadium earlier that year. Nothing is ever guaranteed. We probably would have won, but it's not a sure thing and we for sure would not have "killed them". Just like you didn't kill them.

It's not so much my view of UCONN 1999 team but just the standard that everyone placed on Duke. They were supposed to be unbeatable and leading up to that game, practically everyone had Duke as the favorite. It was Uconn's first Final 4 appearnace.

Think this comeback was good? Kentucky was down 17 against Duke in the second half and made a huge comeback in 1998. That's also the first time they had played each other since the famous Christian Leitner shot. Kentucky went on to win the National Championship that year too! Regardless of who, I always enjoy it when Duke goes home!

This was the singular greatest moment of my college years. Nothing comes close. Our campus took the national title game as a given after winning this game. This was our title, even though we still had to beat Georgia Tech.
Connecticut has always been one of the most if not the best basketball schools in the country along with UNC and Duke. I'm not saying that these teams are the best but they're the most consistent. Jim Calhoun understands the importance of size. Connecticut always recruits the best and has beaten that great Duke (ACC) team in the final four in 1999 and 2004. Now Pitt is another factor coming down the stretch.
This is one of the greatest tournament games I have ever seen. (1999 National Championship is my favorite.) It's amazing that Calhoun was able to get away with not playing Okafor for pretty much the entire first half.
Duke sucks, 3rd best team in the ACC this year, which means they would be the 9th best team in the Big East. The only ACC team that can hang in the Big East is UNC. I'm a Duke fan, but I give Uconn props. They played a really good game. We just came up one point short. It would have been nice though to go up against GT. We would have won the championship.

Duke fan here. First, you are way off about GT. Uconn did not kill GT, do you consider a 9 point Uconn win "killing" them? You guys beat them. And while I do think Duke would have won the game, you are far underestimating how good GT was that year. GT beat Duke AT Cameron Indoor Stadium earlier that year. Nothing is ever guaranteed. We probably would have won, but it's not a sure thing and we for sure would not have "killed them". Just like you didn't kill them.

They were spanking them all game, until the second half, when GT decided to take nothing but 3-pointers and cut the deficit....UCONN was beating them by almost 20 points most of the game!! It's not so much my view of UCONN 1999 team but just the standard that everyone placed on Duke. They were supposed to be unbeatable and leading up to that game, practically everyone had Duke as the favorite. It was Uconn's first Final 4 appearnace.
We can disagree because you simply look at the fact that its two #1 seeds. Thats true and may take away from it a little but I still say its a Top 5 National Championship upset. If you disagree, name me 5 bigger upsets for the National Championship.

I can't name you five but I can name about three.
1. NC State over Houston in 83
2. Villanova over Gtown in 85
3. Texas Western over Kentucky in 66
Although, it was just the semis, Duke beating undefeated UNLV in 91 was a huge upset.
Regardless, I'm glad UConn won the title because I hate Duke.

@jcaudill6921 Actually Connecticut beating Duke in '99 was the biggest upset in the Final. Connecticut was a 9.5-point underdog in that game.
N.C. St. was a 7.5-point underdog; Villanova was a 9-point underdog and Texas Western was a 6-point underdog.
Duke was an 8-point underdog vs. UNLV.
All of them were great upsets though.

@ByronS360 UCONN in 1999 isn't just a Top 5 National Championship upset, it's the #1 National Championship upset.
Still, it doesn't take anything away from Texas Western, Villanova, or N.C. St., who provided memorable moments of their own.

Most basketball analysts would look back at the 1999 Uconn championship as a major upset.
Uconn never won a championship prior to that game and Duke already proven to be a basketball powerhouse. Duke was supposed to win easily. Just reviewing El Amin reaction immediately following the game shows you how much of an upset it was due to all the pre game coverage already annointing Duke as the champion.

Look, I'm a basketball junky. I follow college basketball religiously to the point that its unhealthy. I remember everything about that tournament. Yes, it was surprising to see UConn beat Duke but it wasn't like Villanova in 1985. That is one of the biggest upsets in Final Four history.
I don't know why you're so concerned about how big of an upset people view this as? I was happy to see UConn win but no one brings that up when discussing biggest upsets.

I guess I view UConn's 1999 team as being more talented than your opinion of him. Yeah, it was awesome to see them win it and it was unexpected but no one will discuss that as being one of the top 10 or even top 5 biggest upsets of all time. Two one seeds...with one being a big time favorite, got beat by a fellow one seed who was still a top 4 ranked team.
1985 8th seeded Villanova over #1 Georgetown is the definition of a huge upset.

This game was absolutely ruined by the officials. Im neither a UConn or Duke fan, I was rooting for UConn though, but anyways, the officials controlled this game from the very tip off. There was a whistle every 20-30 seconds. It got old real fast. How many FTs were shot in this crap fest?

Im a Kentucky fan. I hate Duke more than I do Satan. I wish the worst upon them all the time.
I remember watching the game. Duke had only lost one game that year on a last second dunk to Cincinnati in the Great Alaskan shootout. Still, UConn was a #1 seed. It wasn't like when Villanova beat Georgetown as an 8 seed. It was a bit of a surprise but I would hardly call it a 'huge upset.'

Uconn was a 2 seed. although you are correct. I wish the refs didn't decide the game. they called two asinine fouls on okafur in the beginning then tried making up for it by fouling out all the Duke's big men. If not for the refs this really was a 50/50 game.

Think this comeback was good? Kentucky was down 17 against Duke in the second half and made a huge comeback in 1998. That's also the first time they had played each other since the famous Christian Leitner shot. Kentucky went on to win the National Championship that year too! Regardless of who, I always enjoy it when Duke goes home!

I remember that game....Im a Tar Heel but i was cheering for UK...We were favored to win that year and choked in the Final 4 against Utah....They took Antwaan Jamison and Vince carter out the game and Shammond Williams and Ed Cota couldnt pick up the slack....Sucky ending for us...

This was the singular greatest moment of my college years. Nothing comes close. Our campus took the national title game as a given after winning this game. This was our title, even though we still had to beat Georgia Tech.

Connecticut has always been one of the most if not the best basketball schools in the country along with UNC and Duke. I'm not saying that these teams are the best but they're the most consistent. Jim Calhoun understands the importance of size. Connecticut always recruits the best and has beaten that great Duke (ACC) team in the final four in 1999 and 2004. Now Pitt is another factor coming down the stretch.

This is one of the greatest tournament games I have ever seen. (1999 National Championship is my favorite.) It's amazing that Calhoun was able to get away with not playing Okafor for pretty much the entire first half.

Duke sucks, 3rd best team in the ACC this year, which means they would be the 9th best team in the Big East. The only ACC team that can hang in the Big East is UNC. They should just end the ACC right now and give the title to Carolina, give a 5 seed in the tourney and watch them lose in the 1st round. Duke SUCKS.

What a great win. Coach Calhoun OWNS that crybaby Coach K. First in 99 for the title then in 2004, wow he outcoached "the great Coach K" very badly twice. How can anyone say that Duke got screwed in this game? The refs were horrible, in Duke's favor most of the time. If we had Emeka all game we would have won by at least 10.
