East German army was the real Prussian army, similar on many points, to the Wehrmacht. West German Bundeswher was a pale copy of US troops, at the time of cold war.
@Camarale When the NVA came into existance it was clearly stated that it was the end of Prussian traditions in the New German nation. The Soviets were stunned when they came out with the same looking uniforms as WWII. The NVA even kept the same cadence as the former German Army instead of adopting the Soviet style. It was over time that the East began to see themselves as the true successor of the Prussian military traditions.

It does in fact say in the footnotes that the Russians pushed the uniforms, but that they urged a 120 ft step per minute Russian style cadence not the German 114 ft. TheGermans said that it did not work well with German music. All this took place when the Kasernierte Volkspolizei became the NVA. Sorry for the mistake, but I know I've read it some place.

East German army was the real Prussian army, similar on many points, to the Wehrmacht. West German Bundeswher was a pale copy of US troops, at the time of cold war.

@Camarale When the NVA came into existance it was clearly stated that it was the end of Prussian traditions in the New German nation. The Soviets were stunned when they came out with the same looking uniforms as WWII. The NVA even kept the same cadence as the former German Army instead of adopting the Soviet style. It was over time that the East began to see themselves as the true successor of the Prussian military traditions.

@Ekatjam IRONICALLY, according to the 1972 book "Germany Rearmed" (don't recall the author), the Soviet Military Administration (SMA) in eastern German sector ACTUALLY ENCOURAGED the NVA to "dress traditionally" to encourage enlistment and "revive traditional pride with a blend of Socialist zeal". Ergo....

@ursa41 In the book "REQUIEM FOR AN ARMY" The demise of the East German military. It does in fact say in the footnotes that the Russians pushed the uniforms, but that they urged a 120 ft step per minute Russian style cadence not the German 114 ft. TheGermans said that it did not work well with German music. All this took place when the Kasernierte Volkspolizei became the NVA. Sorry for the mistake, but I know I've read it some place.
