@medeltidsdykaren The swedish Lucia and the german Christkind are quintessentially different.
Santa Lucia is a Saint and the german Christkind is a symbolic figure for baby Jesus and in some areas of Germany a 'female Santa Claus' ("Weihnachtsmann") - Christmas gift-bringer on the 24.12.
my best friend mom is swedish and she used to sing me this song at bedtime whenever I asked because I love it so much. Hearing this song performed so well reminds me of all the wonderful things about my childhood and how much this beautiful swedish tradition is laced in my memories, thank you.
I'm swedish. yes, we do use real candles. I know it seems very dangerous and all, but we've got people with big bowls of water and towls standing next to us, so there is no real danger. Also, we are getting very informed how to walk and so on. Though, the smaller kids use fake candles. I know, it's a weird tradition, but cool. And yeah, it hurts to get drips of the melted candle in your eyebrows, and hair, yes. But It's worth it because everything else is so nice about it. Take care everyone :D
I am from Sicily, and someone hase to expalain me, how did our Santa Lucia from Sicily get to Sweden? We sing the SAME song, I am astonished, because Santa Lucia is such a popular holyday in Sicily, and now I find Santa Lucia in Sweden. A catholic Saint in Protestand Sweden, how is this possible?
@Trinacria1973 According to the Julian Calendar, which was used in Sweden until the 18th century, the 13th of December is the winter Solstice on the Northen Hemisphere. In folklore it is a night of dark powers when it's best to stay awake and an extra meal would be required during the early morning hours. The modern tradition, however, was invented in the 19th century along with other christmas traditions such as christmas trre and Santa Claus.
@Trinacria1973 This tradition has spread too numerous countries throw Europe ( look up on wikipedia ). But mostly reconized in Sweden and Sicily. I like this song tho cause it always reminded me that christmas break was about too start after that day in School.
in Sweden the girl who get picked out for Lucia is uselley the most beautiful girl of them all and always have blonde long hair and Blue eyes. Not sure if the "real" Lucia were blonde tho.
I love it whenever they choose to sing the "Sankta Lucia" lyrics instead of the (sadly) more widespread "Natten går tunga fjät" lyrics. The Sankta Lucia lyrics are much more beautiful.
@237Michael There are some special candles for that, and the paper discs that are fitted around the candle of course. Those girls seem to have some fancy brass holders though.
The real danger I would say is not getting burnt by candles, but fainting, which is a rather easy thing to do when standing on one spot for a rather long time while holding a candle underneath ones nose. I almost did it once, and I remember a girl who did it for real, but managed to blow out her candle before she went down
I love how Christianity affects us, even tho we are mostly an Atheist nation. we celebrate Christmas,Easter, Saint Lucia, and we baptize, we marry each other using christian customs. and we bury each other using christian customs.
@Corpzmaker91 Actually, a lot of the Swedish Christmas traditions are pagan in origin. Julskinkan (the Christmas ham) and Julbocken (the Christmas goat) for example, are remains from when Sweden was still adhering to Asatro. Christmas trees are pagan. Heck, we even kept the pagan name for the holiday (Jul). Do you eat eggs (or have easter eggs with candy in them) for Easter? Do you decorate with hares/bunnies? That's also pagan. Even the Easter name comes from the Germanic goddess Ēostre.
@HeathenMaiden I have not seen a christmas goat on christmas since i was 8, except for the one that they burn down each year :) and well yeah ofcourse some traditions are from our pagan ways.
That doesn't mean anything. Lots of sayings and customs of today had very different meanings and connotations at the time of their origins. Anti-Christians come out of the woodwork in December diminishing what Christmas really commemorates, saying the secular use of evergreens or the tree or anything is a farce. Never mind that old uses of symbols, etc. no longer carry a context of honoring false gods. All that God created is inherently good. Use them to honor the One True God.
@kostumeman There's always been a (winter solstice) celebration towards the end of December, way before there was any Christmas. When Europe was Christianized, to make it easier for the people to adhere to the new religion, they were allowed to keep the old pagan holidays, this is historical fact (hence why it's still called Yule in northern Europe). That is why the Christian Christmas is celebrated in December. No where in the bible does it say Jesus was born on December 25th.
@kostumeman Also, if your god created anything and everything in the universe and if everything that he has created is good, then that must mean that the devil is good too. So can I then use the devil to honor this god you speak of? ;)
It is what creation does that turns what is intrinsically good into evil. Even the devil started as a good angel who succumbed to pride and envy. If you are a heathen or pagan, you already do honor the devil by mocking or refusing to acknowledge the true God. Enjoy wallowing and laughing in your own sarcasm and pride. :(
@Corpzmaker91 Funny thing is... all those "christian" celebrations u listed are modified versions of pagan celebrations. Christmas is a ripoff from yule and Lucia was celebrated in Sweden well before christianity got here. This was done by the church to easier convert the nordic countries.
@emil9412 Thats right. People in common did´nt know anything about the christian Lucia from Syracuse. This night was a night full of magic essence and one of them was "Lusse", a troll that moved around in the night with his entourage of troll and other gnomes and trolls and it was best to be wary of their antics. People did best in staying home in thoose long mid-winternights..
@emil9412 So basically we're doing the christian celebrations when we could do the pagan ones, that's what you're saying. meaning i was kinda right anyway. It does not matter what kind of religion we're celebrated before, we're atheists now and we're still celebrating
@Corpzmaker91 well that´s maybe what you are doing. I don´t believe in god, and therefore have not celebrated those days. Me and my friends didn´t marry in church and won´t be buried on graveyards. Please don´t generalize. There are for sure people who use "christianity" for getting presents and holidays like you, but that doesn´t mean anything for people like us who stand strong for their opinion. God does not exist for us and so it would be wrong for us to feast on these days!
@Corpzmaker91 For Christ sake, we remember death and resurrection of Christ during Easter season (exactly on Good Friday). At Christms season we celebrate the birth of Christ:-)

@cloudrenibo The italians at the time of Lucia's life around 300AD had blonde hair and blue eyes, as Northern Italians still do. Since you have no idea, why not read some history before you speak. Southern Italians did not become 'darkened' until the muslim arab invasion of Italy & Southern Europe. In 652 the muslim invasion of Italy began & were not ousted until almost 1300. During this time huge immigration from afica & mideast occured.
We lived in Sweden (Lund) in 1983 to 1986... it's very nice to be able to use Youtube to remember some of those trevligt evenings, and the warm welcome the Swedes gave us. Tak tak for allt.

I believe in big boobs ! it is a kinda of faith/religion. i don't speak much about it though i sorta try to keep it for my self. I would love to have a couple of chicks with big breasts on my funeral, that is my life goal !
My grandparents left Sweden over 100 years ago. I married an Italian and have a daughter named Lucinda. Such a small world. I speak no Swedish but love having the song lyrics. Tack sa mycket.
@lindknoll u got a daughter oh man by the time she reach her teen age years u gonna have a big problem ...she might lose her virginty at the age of 13...
I am from germany where they do not know the lucia feast, but i feel very much connected because i know how it feels to live in dark country. you light all the candles and you sing together, this gives us hope and confidence.
@monami65 The Lucia-feast is not from Germany. There are many other traditons that spread over the whole world - or at least all over Europe - like the Christmas Tree or the Advent Wreath or the Adventcalendar, but as far as I know the Lucia celebrations are typically Swedish. But it is a really nice feast with a wounderful tradition. I'd like to celebrate it once in Sweden!

Thank you - and is it ok if I "borrow" your lyrics for the information section of this video? Lots of people ask for these lyrics and I'd like to keep them handy. (See the modified info now and let me know if you want me to alter it)
In Sicily, there are no candles on Lucia's head, instead there's a procession through Siracusa where 6 men carry a solid silver statue of the saint, Lucia.

@TheatreOBlackRomance what I dont get is this: if u hate lucia that much, why watch this video? i cant stand people that looks for videos they hate just so they can leave mean comments -.- and really, ur 20?? omg GROW UP!
8DoctorWho8 1 year ago
@8DoctorWho8 I hate people who always say "if you don't like, so don't watch and grow up"..you musta know people watch a video not only because they like it, that's why youtube created the like button, and the dilikes one. Get it? there are a lot of reason to watch a video, and everyone can say what he think of it. If it rocks or if it sucks. Now grow up.

Glad Lucia and a happy Christmas from all of your distant cousins in Minnesota! Not only Swedes, but also Norwegians, Germans, Ojibway and Sioux, Laotians and Somalians - we all thank you, Sweden, for having made such a beautiful contribution to our culture here!

I live in Alaska and was chosen to be the 'Saint Lucia' of my school...
I have shoulder length dirty blonde hair & I am 5'6 feet. I speak English and I have to go to each classroom & give kids some bread while singing this song with 2nd graders.
Anyway.... I am 12. [:

Thanks for the lyrics! I'm going to be Lucia this year and I need to perfect my knowledge of how you sing this song so I don't screw up, so having the lyrics is really helpful. :)
Very good group of singers. :)

How does the girl with the candles on her head get to be qualified for this? It's a beautiful custom, wish we celebrated it here. :)
Deidaraslover23 1 year ago
@Deidaraslover23
The girl with the candles on her head is supposed to be Lucia (if you don't know the story, wikipedia is recommended).
She sings the most, and usually says a poem or so. Also notice she has a red ribbon on her waist (it should be blood).
You usually vote for a Lucia, or pick someone that sings good, or thats how we do it in school :P
Hope i answered your questions.

@beeqool and of course you have no idea that it should be a dark haired girl that represent Lucia as she was Italian?
cloudrenibo 1 year ago
@cloudrenibo fucking idiot
beeqool 1 year ago

It.Doesn't.Matter.How.She.Looks. or thats what i think.
dargur18 1 year ago
@cloudrenibo The italians at the time of Lucia's life around 300AD had blonde hair and blue eyes, as Northern Italians still do. Since you have no idea, why not read some history before you speak. Southern Italians did not become 'darkened' until the muslim arab invasion of Italy & Southern Europe. In 652 the muslim invasion of Italy began & were not ousted until almost 1300. During this time huge immigration from afica & mideast occured.

@niamyania This tradition came to Sweden from Germany in the late 17 th century . I always thought you had it in Germany as well. Merry Christmas <3
monami65 1 year ago
@monami65 The Lucia-feast is not from Germany. There are many other traditons that spread over the whole world - or at least all over Europe - like the Christmas Tree or the Advent Wreath or the Adventcalendar, but as far as I know the Lucia celebrations are typically Swedish. But it is a really nice feast with a wounderful tradition. I'd like to celebrate it once in Sweden! Merry Christmas - God Jul - Fröhliche Weihnachten!

This is the lyrics, in Swedish!!
Sankta Lucia, ljusklara hägring,
sprid i vår vinternatt glans av din fägring.
||: Drömmar med vingesus under oss sia,
tänd dina vita ljus, Sankta Lucia. :||
Kom i din vita skrud, huld med din maning.
Skänk oss, du julens brud, julfröjders aning.
||: Drömmar med vingesus, under oss sia,
tänd dina vita ljus, Sankta Lucia. :||

Thank you - and is it ok if I "borrow" your lyrics for the information section of this video? Lots of people ask for these lyrics and I'd like to keep them handy. (See the modified info now and let me know if you want me to alter it)

klart du får :)

In Sicily, there are no candles on Lucia's head, instead there's a procession through Siracusa where 6 men carry a solid silver statue of the saint, Lucia.
