"Perfect pitch, a capella and no cue"? No, in their book and televised interviews they admit they lip synced. The difference in heights was more than the mics of that day could handle, so they studio recorded Saturday mornings, then lip synced at the live performance that evening. That being said, they were great great lip syncers. And how nice to actually know them!
I was born and grown up in Yokohama, near Tokyo and, when I was high school student, I was preparing for the entrance examination of University and at midnight, I was a listening music by Yokohama FM broadcasting.
Harbour Light was the opening number of the music program and I was
dreaming of traveling all over the world as a trading company.
Now, I am 70 years old but I still remember the Lennon Sisters-Harbour Light.
Isn't it wonderful that these incredible women are still with us today. I think they still get together in Branson Missouri and only Peg is not touring.
@boatracer39 I can echo boatracer39's comments. I have known that family for 55 years personally, and enjoyed seeing them in Branson before they retired.. As he said, Peggy in fact did move back to Calif. Many of their younger brothers live in Branson too. I think I asked you (Boatracer39) if I knew you a frew years ago, but you said no. I went to St. Mark School in Venice with them. Wife got dressed for our wedding there at their house in 1970.
@fbenenati Are The Lennon Sisters back home in California again? I have a book a kind person on here given to me in May. The book had been updated and they were still in Branson then. When did they retire? DeeDee was my favorite sister.
@Sheri451 Sheri, only Peggy returned to Califoria. She remarried a Doctor who has a practice there. DeeDee retired and still lives in Branson with most of all the Lennnon family. Kathy.Janet, and Mimi still perform in Branson and will be at the Any Williams Theater in Nov. and Dec. DeeDee is recovering from knee surgery and is doing well.
@boatracer39 I love seeing the Lawrence Welk episodes with them. DeeDee is my Fathers age, they were born six days apart. She was born Dec 1st and he was born Dec 6th1939.
@boatracer39 That was a great year. Some of the very best movies of all time came out that year. But something very sad happened that year too. England was bombed by Germany. I'm not from England but I sympathise with Europe
@Sheri451 Sheri, to my knowledge, Boatracer is correct. I did not mean to give you the impression that they had all returned to CA. Only Peggy has returned to CA. I believe Janet and Peggy's daughters performed with the sisters who remained in Branson. Boatracer keeps up with this family even better than I do now. Sure enjoyed growing up with then in 50's and 60's in Venice, CA, and seeing them a few times in Branson too more recently before they retired.
@fbenenati I love watching them on Lawrence Welk on PBS. And it was a horrible thing about their beloved father dying from a crazy man killing him in 1969. Kip never got to know him.
@Sheri451 Your are sure right about the sadness with the loss of their dad Bill. He was a wonderful guy. I went to his funeral and it was, as you would expect, hugely attended and very emotional. The oldest boy (sisters' brother Dan, who is about four years younger than Janet), was the one who had to tell his mom the horrible news after the incident happened. They are a wonderful family. I was fortunate to attend church and school with them.
@SandraWrites It just goes to show that beautiful, talented ,wholesome, Christian girls are still in high demand . They are just very hard to find these days!
Such lovely ladies! They went through such grief when that stalker murdered their father in the 70's. Especially Peggy, since she was the one the killer was obsessed with. Supposedly he wanted to get her attention. How sick!. Does anyone else remember this?
@BeachComber1977 - No, I didn't know about this-how horrible for the sisters and their mother. I grew up watching them on TV. That's just so wrong. Regards, '62 Mathew St. (Total Retro Rock)
@OlRetro The wonderful thing is that with faith in God and plenty of family support, the Lennons were able to get past this horrible time in their lives. I read that their mom remarried at the age of 80! :) It's never too late to find true love again!
This is a most beautiful rendition of this song by the Lennon Sisters. (The original recording of ''Harbor Lights'' by Sammy Kaye featuring vocals by Tony Alamo and Nancy Norman, hit no. 1 on the charts the second and third weeks of November 1950.)
@KelleyMag John's ancestry is also Irish, and the Lennon Sisters are of Irish-German descent on their father's side, and English-Spanish-Mexican on their mother's side.
@dexx600 I don't why this comment got negative votes. It's perfectly understandable to ask. I don't for certain if John and the Lennon Sisters were related, but John's family traced their ancestryt back to man named McClairnan (I don't know if the spelling is correct). The name got shortened to Lennon somewhere along the line.
Man imagine the Platters at there best performing this song in 2009? Would teach a thing or two.................or three to the joke of singers we have these days.....
What was amazing from the start is their feeling for their music and lyrics. It went way beyond their years and experience at the time. They always sang every song with total attention to the story it was telling, the mood it needed and the most beautiful elements of the melody. True artists. Still beautiful and still sounding beautiful.
Would you believe the youngest (Janet) is 62 years old now?? Oldest would be about close to 70 (Dee Dee). But the years have been very kind to them. Clean living.
I had the privilege of knowing them personally since grade school i Venice, CA. Went to the same school and church with them, used to play at their house with their brothers. The whole family is a wonderful, close knit beautiful family. God bless them all. I saw them in Branson a few years ago before they retired. Bless them all.
Man, I used to see these girls on TV when I was a little boy. I didn't realize how good looking they all were (still are). I used to think their sound was way too sugary for my liking, but damn... that's a pretty song. Short and sweet.
Yes, you are Correct-Janet is the lovely cute little one. I grew up watching these girls every week & they were favorite's to listen on the L W Show. As for singing Harmony, in my opinion, they are the best female quartet of all time. For a Trio, my favorite is The Maguire Sisters.
Nice one girls. This is the best song. My father was a Captain on merchant ships & every time my mother heard this song she would cry. Now its my wife that does the crying!
Just one more example of how very wonderful and priceless the Lennon Sisters are to our memories of a treasured era gone by....They just have no peers, do they?...So wonderful to hear and see them at their best, then and not so long agao...
This is a very nice version of a song made famous by Sammy Kaye. The Lawrence Welk show was never shown in the UK. Between 1956 and 1961 the Lennon sisters only had 4 records released in the UK, 'Graduation Day', 'Young And In Love', 'Shake Me I Rattle', and 'Sad Movies'. I have looked through all the Welk clips on YouTube and it looks like they never sang any of them on the Welk show. Thanks for posting.
I see that I must be the only one that has found this video, only 186 views. I know they must all be mine. What a beautiful song sung by beautiful ladies. They really touch your heart! It would have been a privilege to have known them.
Great clip! Thanks!

So they recorded the songs in the morning and then taped before millions of people that night? Even more impressive! lol
Maybe God has a plan for the popularity of all the misogynistic music of today...but I sure don't understand the plan. This is wonderful music!
