  • I am speechless...If this is the best the great Van Halen can do to re-create their old masterpiece live. It's C-R-A-P!!!!!!!!! I was in a band in the early 1980s and we did JUMP spot on to the record. I played Synth and my friend Danny played a mighty fine guitar solo note-for-note.

On this video, the synth comes from nowhere (pre-recorded?) and as someone said,it's a semitone sharp (coming out in C#).

If I had been in the audience I would have expected a refund. APALLING!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wolfgang Van Halen's mon(Valerie Bertinelli) is MILFalicious!!! LOL......

  • a little flat eddie?

  • i read somewhere that this was a blooper and the keyboard was in the wrong key, on one of those online articles pointing things out like this and stuff...

huh? constant one note that maybe is a semitone lower? continious what is going on here?

    off pitch, or too loud!

  • Its over Eddie - when you cant hear your monitor its time to call it a fuckin day.

  • The funny thing is the fans probably dont notice it...

  • Comment removed

  • 367 people are oblivious to how funny this is. Thanks for the upload! Probably the funniest video I've seen on youtube, Van Halen shredding their own music live in front of thousands of paying fans!

  • Sound, keyboard guy report to my office to collect p45

  • Ed has several guitars set to different tunings. Probably has 2-3 set to standard tuning & some set to "Top Jimmy" style tuning (DADACD). My guess is Jump is to be played in standard tuning & his guitar tech gave him one with a completely different tuning (Not just drop D, because that can be fixed instantly with his D-Tuna device). Once the song starts, you can't just tune your guitar on the fly. You're hosed. This was the guitar tech's fault & the band decided to play on instead of stopping.

  • This wasn't Eddie's fault. Eddie and Wolfgang were both playing in tune. It was the keyboard that was set incorrectly.

  • Not to be able to transpose on the fly is pretty sad for a veteran musician.

  • @Skibble5150 There were no notes to transpose to! A 44.1k recording played at 48K sample rate puts the synth part about 1 and 1/4 tones higher!

  • yikes

  • Is this not the gig where the backing track had been set to 48khz instead of 44.1khz on the dat player?

That would make the keys about a semitone and a bit out with the guitars. I imagine the sound guy got his bollox in a bag that night!

  • Well the "keys" backing is in tune here though it is a semitone up from the record. Thing is Ed's guitar is not a semitone flat or a whole tone flat its half way in between. That is a guitar tuning issue. Sounds like an unlikely scenario but could Ed have picked up a guitar he thought to be in E but tuned to E flat and maybe that guitar had been knocked flat also making this horrendous cacophony of sound? Not a backing issue as its in tune and same key as other shows they did after this 1. Hmmm

  • @zappafile Van Halen tunes at E flat live and in the studio the sequence is at 440 the keyboard tech got fired immediately

  • Sounds like an elephant with hemorrhoids!!

  • Keyboard was kicked off in the wrong key. It happens.

  • @drumrnva That's more than just the keyboard in the wrong key. That guitar is not in tune with itself, listen to the solo. Not even close.

  • This will never get old. A+!

  • What a fucking trainwreck, oh my god *facepalm*

  • This could bring nations together

  • This sucks so bad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.

  • Comment removed

  • I think Ed was on the Nectar this evening. Outta tune or playing the wrong key

  • All good things must end.

  • This is too funny.

  • Diabolical. I've heard better club bands. These guys need to tune up man - I mean it's only 5 chord rock stuff, it's not exactly The Rite Of Spring is it? I'd have asked for a refund.

  • @tygone90 Did you happen to look at all my other videos from this show? The sound is fine on those. But I guess if you truly believe the device I used didn't handle the analog to digital conversion adequately, you probably believe that my device also faked the portion of the video where Ed is obviously trying to tune his guitar by the amps.

  • @tygone90 Er... what the? Recording something on a cell phone doesn't change the tuning of an instrument, and in any case it would *never* selectively change the tuning of a *single* instrument while keeping the rest of the sound untouched, that just can't happen.

  • @tygone90 hahhaah, dude... you rock! hahahaha. Santa also exists :p

  • @tygone90 That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

  • @tygone90 "BB Gadgets maestro Joel Johnson ruined my morning today by sending this clip of a recent Van Halen concert, featuring a "Jump" train wreck. Apparently, the pre-recorded synth parts were accidentally played back at a 48k bitrate instead of 44.1k. The result is a dissonant mess...."

  • can blame dave for this

  • He did not grab the wrong guitar. It's the backing keyboard track. It's at the wrong sample/bit rate. If you have any recording software at home you can test it for yourself. It changes the key.

  • Why'd they fucking carry on? You'd stop and apologise and start again with the right guitar.

  • that was pure rape, what eddie did, god awfull.......

  • Eddie did not have the pick of destiny that night

  • But, how could he not recognise that and keep going? Anyone else would hVE Stopped and got another guitar...

  • At least Michael's taped backing vocals sound good on this..

  • Ugh! Hurts my ears!!!

  • Best Van Halen performance I've ever seen. Brings a tear to my eye.

  • it's on the Midi synth, the keyboard tech tuned it down one semitone

  • Van Halen Shreds

  • horrible!!!!

  • Is he deaf? Does it not realize he's playing in the wrong key?

  • His guitar tech should be shot.

  • Comment removed

  • Drums Sounds SHIT !

  • MY EARSS!!!!!

  • エディは悪くない...、前もって録音されたキーボード音をコンサートスタッフが誤った周波数で再生してしまった...、エディがこんなミスを犯すはずありません!

    さすがにファンはそんなことお構いなしですね!

  • EVH Guitar Tuning = Epic Fail

EVH Jump on chorus line = Priceless!!

  • haha he's so unaware his guitars out of key ><

  • But lets be honest, any professional guitarist should be able to notice that he is playing in a different key and sort it out. Here EVH is just blissfully unaware of how awful he sounds. Don't blame the tech, any guitarist of his prestige shouldn't make this mistake.

  • Sounds like in this case the issue was the way his guitar was tuned. Fire the guitar tech.

  • EVH and the rest of the band were just in different keys

  • i read about this in a guitar magazine. his guitar was tuned in a totally different key to the rest of the band apparently. we all know that eddie doesnt suck and i find the fact that alot of people on here are basing whether he sucks or not on this one video quite sad and pathetic. it seems that its whoever passed evh his guitar that night was responsible not eddie.

  • @GuitarAdam1 Once EVH realizes he does not have the right guitar which typically would be his frankestrat, he is the one responsible to change. EVH could have and should have fixed this train wreck but he did not. EVH did not change guitars like he is supposed to in order to play with the keyboard tracks, so you have to put this on EVH.

Pro guitarists change guitars in the middle of songs when they need to all the time, and as the keyboards cary the song, there were plenty of opportunites

  • @GuitarAdam1 Typical, somehow eddie not sucking means its also not his fault, grow up and recognize it can be a mistake but it can still be HIS mistake, he is not god so don't be a fanboy, HE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, whatever way you look at it. Blame the guitar tech, and then blame your own ears for not being able to hear your own instrument, you act like they aren't pro enough to use monitors.

  • This is hilariously bad

  • This is the universe taking a giant shit on Eddie for firing Michael Anthony and replacing him with his piece of shit son.

  • 1:54-1:59 TOTAL TRAINWRECK

  • Wow this is not good even a little bit

  • 339 people dislike this

  • btw... OW.. MAKE IT STOP!!

  • possibly eddie is tuned down a half step, and because of sound monitor issues he cant tell.

  • 4:12 makes me think Sammy is laughing his ass off

  • this disgusts me

  • lmfao

337 people dont know how to play guitar

  • Comment removed

  • franchement c'est pas terrible ,le groupe a mal vielli

  • Love Van Halen but this is ridiculous. 4:10 killed me.

  • I don't believe that ge was given the wrong guitar. a guitarist like that could handle this and transpose the song as good as possible. It would be really interesting what's the real reason but i think we will never get the answer

  • the keys you here in this song are a backing track they used, and when copying it it went out of pitch. the band is in tune, the backing track however is not. and thats the truth

  • For those who think that it was the keyboard track that was off, watch and listen to this track from the same tour. The keyboard was fine, it was EVH who was screwed up...

  • What I don't understand is why didn't Eddie transpose the whole thing a half-step up? It's clear he's playing a guitar that's a half-step down and it's also clear to me that he knows it (he seems to be trying to get closer to amps/monitors to hear whether it's as off as he thinks it is). He could have just moved the whole song up one fret.

  • Nothing is wrong with the keyboard track. Eddie was simply handed the wrong guitar (tuned down).

  • fact is halen got drunk some time back and never sobered up,hagar and hall bein clean saw what had and was to become of what was the greatest band ever, they stuck it out till enough was enough, this video is unedited what yr seein is the remains of halen storming past decay.what a total fucked up waste, they be fools but hagar still rules

  • I Think the tape is at the wrong sample rate and as a result in a different key. They probably couldn't do anything once it had started!

  • @TGA92

You're correct. It was supposed to be sampled at 44100 kilohertz and the sound guy sampled at 48000 instead by accident. This created a problem that not even EVH is capable of fixing since the fuckup altered the music to a pitch that makes the notes on the sample occur in between the standard twelve notes used in western music so EVH would have to intuitively (to the extent of being psychic) raise/lower the pitch of each note with the whammy bar as he plays it.

  • it sounded out of tune because of the keyboard playing faster than expected so it made them appear out of tune

  • ouch! got a few tuning issues there

  • Sampling rate? Seriously guys? So... let me get this straight... The bass player just also happens to also be tuned a semitone sharp along with the "out of tune" backing track?

  • @SuperGuitarNerd ahhh good call lol

  • He grabbed the wrong guitar. Would bet the farm it wasn't the sampling rate. Eddie's fault and he should have got another brought out to him. They might have fired someone else, but he's a pro and should have recognized that he dropped the ball on that one.

  • @123YoungAngus Wrong-O!

  • @123YoungAngus Given that the original source recording was from someones video camera(with either a stereo L/R mic or mono mic) and the person who recorded this clip could only use the mic on the camera, explain how the guitar track and the guitar track only was affected by this so called tampering? How was this tampering done? How can you pitch shift just the guitar part when your source tape is either just two track stereo or worse yet mono? There is no "untampered" greensboro jump,

  • @123YoungAngus He didn't tamper with this, I have seen other videos from this show, some were posted the day of the show and it was just like this.. It was a technical problem. I heard his tech was fired that night as a result of handing the wrong guitar

  • SPINAL TAP LIVES!!!!

  • nailed it

  • @millalevi you don't know what youre talking about.

Van Halen was apparently too cheap to get a keyboard player live, so they played a recording. The engineer who I presume was fired used the wrong sample rate so the pitch of the recording was off from the normal chords. That is why the guitar is not in tune with the music. Why they didn't stop playing when they realized something wrong, I don't know.

  • @ErnestCortez True, everyone is talking about guitars being out of tune, eddie grabbing the wrong guitar blablabla. It's just the sample rate of the backing track.

  • guitar was tuned a half step flat, and with a Floyd Rose equipped guitar, you are STUCK. you can't retune it a half step down. EVH obviously knew it, and was trying to do what he could.

  • @roccotanto All EVH had to do was go and get the guitar that is tuned for the keyboard tracks. EVH has alwaysh had to have a guitar tuned differntly than his standard guitars to be able to play along with Jump and I'll Wait. Ed did not grab the right guitar and was too stubborn or stoned to grab the right guitar. Lonnie Totman former EVH tech explains this one very clearly. This debacle is 100% EVH

  • By using the word great I was being sarcastic....hate it when people take things so literally , this is so terrible its hilariously funny , do I need to explain more .

  • @vanhalen6969, that's the spirit!!! I love all this sort of music and yes I'm in the remaining 5% .

  • 3:18...dave twirls a nice baton.LOL

  • sounds like bagpipes

  • This is great !

  • @summerswot wow,talk about a diehard...lol

  • Even if his guitar had been in tune that was the sloppiest i've ever heard anyone play that solo.

  • The pre-recorded keyboard is being played back at a slightly higher pitch than it should have been.

  • @scifihunnybunny I doubt it because the bass guitar is in tune with the backing.

  • @scifihunnybunny Your theory does not hold up. Play this performance of Jump simultaniously with two other performances of jump from this tour and the keys are playing at the same pitch and speed in both performances. The striking difference is that the guitar parts are at different pitches. EVH did not grab the right guitar to be able to play with the keyboard tracks. The bass, keys, vocals and even drums according to Lonnie Totman are all in tune for this song. 100% EVH screw up

  • um, if eddie is such a wiz, which hears proof.

move all the notes up to where they oughta be.

what guitar player has ever broke a string and had to do some fast math in the head

    TO MAKE IT SOUND RIGHT

i think he did a damn good job for how messed up it is

but who cares, he nailed the solo at least 90% right

is this version avaiable for VH Guitar Hero?

  • jazz.

  • it's obvious that eddie has a guitar in Eb when he should have a guitar that's in standard...there is an amazingly simple solution to this sonic nightmare that could have totally saved the song...play the one chord you ride on during the intro and verse a half step up, run over to the techy, cut his dick off then grab your e standard guitar and everything is back on track

  • @manifestgtr then they apparently had this issue many times..ive seen other shows where the same thing happened.

  • What the hell happened?! I know he didnt suck like this I went to the Greensboro one. This is an edit of the video.

  • @Icter2 I assure you, I did not edit this video in any way, shape or form.

  • @Icter2 Haha you were just tone deaf back then

  • @Icter2

Eddies guitar was tuned differently and out of key with the band.

  • damnit eddie ruined some of the best footage of the tour

  • ok so eddies a half step down from the keyboard, obviously. But i wana know why he continues to play.I know he could hear that its outta tune.duh, grab another axe quickly or dont play and wait for another axe, wow.

  • ....mas que merda é essa?????

  • What a mess

  • Methinks Eddie's guitar tech GOT FIRED on this night !!

  • It's half-great half-bad, but I still like it because of the great part.

  • Well at least Dave sounds awesome!

  • My guess is the monitors weren't working for shit and he accidentally got his hands on a downtuned guitar.

  • Either Eddie is totally deaf or he accidentally grabbed a guitar that was drop tuned for one of VHs older tunes. That intro was way out of whack!!!

  • shite

  • the reason it sounds out of tune is because the synth is out of pitch i.e. it isn't set to 440Hz, stop babbling about perfect pitch and all that bullshit, there's nothing Eddie could do at that point short of stopping the song and tuning to the synth/getting the pitch right in the first place on the synth!

  • @grebbington First off, there is no syth being played for this performace of Jump. What you are hearing are pre-recorded Pro Tools keyboard tracks. Second, the keyboard tracks are playing back at the same rate that they were sampled. Changing the the sample/playback rate in Pro-tools requires that you start a new session. Third, these tracks are playing at the same pitch, key, and speed as the other perfomrances on this tour. Answer: Ed did not grab his non-open e flat tuned guiar

  • @neechee5150

I second your statement. Sampling rate, Eddie would probably claim that LOL

  • si

  • isnt this the 1 they stuffed up?

  • I was born with perfect pitch, and can pick a note out from anywhere and am always right. So believe me when I tell you the synth is exactley in c#, and it is Ed who is flat. Maybe a tech tuned his guitar wrong, but Ed is definately the one playing the out of tune notes. Even Wolfie's bass is in tune with the synth. It's not a big deal; mistakes happen, and at least what he was playing was correct.

  • Comment removed

  • @wimpyliberalbuster32 You're a liar. Babies don't know the alphabet is so you couldn't have been born with perfect pitch. Pitch is relative.

  • @Faffel Wow, I'm not saying as a toddler I would walk up to someone and say, "your playing in C#" what I AM saying is that having perfect pitch is something you are born with. look it up. look up "absolute pitch" on wikipedia.

  • @wimpyliberalbuster32 While studying music at the University, I came across a few people with perfect pitch, and they are few and far between. Many good musicans have very good relative pitch which Ed has and could tell he was out. You are correct that the keys are playing in C#. You are correct that the bass is in tune with the keys as well when wolfie actually plays, The screw up is on Ed as he did not change to a keyboard tuned guitar. He still has his standard open E flat tuned guitar.

  • mmmm I like it this way

  • oh man, this really sucks hard...

  • the record of synth just fucked up

  • The playback of the synth part was recorded at a different sample rate then it was played at the gig. This means no matter what, the guitars would be out of tune.. The tuning lies somewhere between semitones on the guitar. This was a mistake of the person in charge of starting the DAT machine. Its like slightly slowing down a reel of tape. Same effect. Small mistake, big consequence.

  • Either he has a locking system and broke a string and for what ever reason had no monitor or it's a video where the sound has been messed with. Like a visual prank. YouTube if full of them.

  • @MillaLevi I didn't do anything to alter this video in any way, shape or form.

  • @almostsaved I got a chuckle out of MillaLevi's comments. Given that this video clip was clearly recorded on a two track digital recording likely as a part of a home made digital video clip, how could any form of digial manipulation be done to detune the guitars and NOT affect other instruments in the mix. This debacle is totally Ed and his refusal to go and get the correct guitar and start playing the song in tune. Ed may not have been sober for this one he might not be thinking clearly

  • @MillaLevi The playback of the synth part was recorded at a different sample rate then it was played at the gig. This means no matter what, the guitars would be out of tune.. The tuning lies somewhere between semitones on the guitar. This was a mistake of the person in charge of starting the DAT machine. Its like slightly slowing down a reel of tape. Same effect. • @randyman18 Your explanation does not explain what is going on. Compare this performance of Jump with two others from this tour. Play them simultaniously and you will find that they keys are intune and in the same key and the same pitch accross all three performances of Jump. What will become very painfully obvious is that the guitar on the greensboro performance is painfully out of tune. Ed has one of his standard E flat tuned guitars instead of his keyboard tuned guitar(frankenstrat)

  • @randyman18 You will notice that for other performances of Jump and I'll wait from this tour Ed is playing one of his frankenstrats instead of the new Fender Wolfgang. Also google Lonnie Totman, former EVH guitar tech. His explanation nails it down. Ed should have changed guitars in order to play along with the pre-recorded keyboard tracks and he didn't. To make matters worse he does not go and change to the correct guitar when he easliy could have done so given the easy guitar parts.

  • @MillaLevi This one is on Ed 100%. He did not change guitars to the keyboard tracks tuned guitar which for this tour was one of his frankenstrats and NOT one of the Fender Wolfgangs. EV could have just gone over and grabbed a frankenstrat and jumped back in playing where he left off, but he chooses not to do this. Google Lonnie Totman, former EVH guitar tech, and he explains it perfectly. Even you were right about the broken string on the floyd, all Ed had to do is grab another guitar.

  • @MillaLevi

EVH tweak his floyd-roses only to be puched down. So, a broken string has no influence about tuning of other strings.

  • @MillaLevi Or Van Halen is stupidly too cheap to higher a keyboardist, and instead using pre-recorded tracks off a rig that was improperly clocked. Note that DLR is singing in tune with the keyboard - then Eddie comes in, probably playing in the normal key, and it sounds like ass. Clocking a track that was recorded at 48 k from a 44.1k source would drop the keyboard track by a little over a half step - about what you're hearing here.

  • @chrisdeadrats THANK YOU!!! Glad to see somebody knows how clocking can effect pitch..

  • @erkalert00 while clocking does affect pitch, clocking had nothing to do with this debacle. Compare the speed, pitch and key of two other live performances of jump from this tour with this debacle. What you will find is that all three keyboard tracks when played simultatiously are in the same pitch and playing at the same speed. The guitars are intune with the keys in the other two clips as well. The one thing that is different, the pitch/key of Eds guitar parts on the Greensboro Jump.

  • @erkalert00 Google Lonnie Totman former EVH guitar tech and he explains this perfectly. In addtion people in the EVH camp have admitted to Totman that this debacle was caused by Ed not changing to his keyboard tracks tuned guitar. All Ed has to do is go and grab his frankenstrat and start playing where he left off. Review Jump performances from this tour and you will see that Ed is usually playing a frakenstrat on Jump and I'll wait as they are tuned to the keyboards. Ed blew it.

  • @neechee5150 Ahh right on, someones done their research lol. makes sense to me now.. the only thing i can't understand is why couldn't he just bend the string or play a semitone up or down on his guitar.. sounds like he tried to but it didn't quite work out

  • @MillaLevi A locking system with a broken string would make all the other strings in a HIGHER key. Eds guitar is clearly in a lower key than the backing.

  • OMG!!!!!!! I guess every band makes mistakes, but ...WOW!!!! This is so out of tune it's awful! Transpose, Dude. Grab another guitar or play it another key!

  • I just timed it: he had from 1:15 to 1:45 (30 seconds) to change guitars with virtually no impact on the song. With the help of a guitar tech, who should be just offstage and ALERTLY prepared for exactly this sort of thing, it should take 10 seconds or less. I've seen it done in about five seconds. No excuse for a band as wealthy as Van Halen to not have this covered, especially when guitars with different tunings are floating around the place.

  • if he's a god he should know how to move a semi tone even if the keys are wrong.

  • What is wrong with Eddie in this!?!??! He sucks! xD

  • Three years since I first saw this, and I'm still LMAO so hard there are tears in my eyes. Hands-down leader for the "All Time Most Horrific On-Stage Train Wreck" award. And it's the ONE song in their repertoire where Ed has time to swap guitars on the fly without the song falling apart!

  • WOw, wow that's not good...

  • I hate bands using piped in music.

Your fucking Van Halen and grossing $93,000,000 on this tour. Pay some fucking kid outta Berklee $50,000 to play keys on your tour, jeez.

  • Van Halen at their best.

  • Sounds like the tape is 2 measures off, maybe they should have stayed in retirement.

  • @klockwerk1 It is much more simple that that. Compare the pitch, key and tempo of the keyboard tracks between this performance of Jump with the 11/30 Medowlands performance of Jump from this same tour. This is proof positive that Ed's guitar is NOT in tune for this performance because he did not change to an A440 tuned guitar. He is still playing with his open E flat tuned guitar. Ed Typically plays one of his frankenstrats for Jump/I'll wait because he is playing with keyboard tracks.

  • Awe that's sad. . . Oh wait this guy makes more money in one year than I make in ten. . .yeah FUCK HIM

  • How sad is it that such a well know guitarist could not even transpose his own song... what has music come to...

  • You might as well jump off the roof and kill yourself after this.

  • Comment removed

  • I would fire the base player

  • @allanshawn Why this painfully out of tune/key/pitch debacle is not Wolf's fault. His dad-EVH is the screw up on this one. If you want him fired becuase he is not 1/2
