Simple history?Find out when The Irish were snet as "mercenaries" in Sri Lanka(Ceylon). There are hints in the song and YES It is 1 of those very potent anti-war songs We have plenty of "PRO" war songs too.But many melodies came from Ireland Like "Tramp, tramp tramp" is "Ireland's32".Other verses instead of Armless..it's "Eyeless noseless,or boneless".Also Dylan's Ballad of John Brown too."It hurts me so 2 C U home3X. Oh back from that isle of Ceylon. But your Peggy'll keep your on as her beau

naa theres a line: "They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again, hurroo, hurroo
They're rolling out the guns again,
But they never will take our sons again,
No they never will take our sons again,
Johnny I'm swearing to ye." I think...

yeah. It's a song protesting against the war recruiting and the war itself. That sons and fathers will ripped off their families.
I think it just landed in the pub-podcast, because it's a song everyone there knows, because it was a song of rebellion.
The American version is "When Johnny comes home again" and they're fudging the whole song by celebrating the people coming back from the war.

Actually this one came after Johnny Comes Marching Home ... it was satirical or what not of the song. The American version came first.
