Just like you can join to be a Ranger, but that's just it you have to pass selection and the Q course to earn your long tab. I'm in the Army right now and went thru selection in April and broke my wrist during the last week. And yes 90% of people off the streets who join with a SF contract don't pass selsction.
@ashwiggy1 lol 200 pushups in one hour? i can do 18 in one minute, that should take no longer than 20-25 minutes, then we have to do 5 minute planks, and 3 minute on each side, then we run 3 miles and 100 crunches in 21/2 minutes, and at least 15 pullups. then we do whatever workout my recruiter wants us to do. then again the new poolees barely keep up lol

you can buy this dvd from discovery. i just sent away for it. just seeing snippets of it on youtube was not enough. this is incredible. my son is a Green Beret and as his parent makes me more proud of him that i was. i respect what he had to go through and the sacrifices these SF young men are doing for us is commendable. out of his group of over 500, only 70 made it.

It was hard to see some guys failing late in the training. In the scene where they have to climb in the 50ft wall and climb through the tunnel and cant over came your phobia of height or claustrophobia resulting in failing...sucks

I was in the navy for four yrs. working in VAW-115 and we had worked with the SEALS indirectly..and no I can't say anything about what we did because of National Security issues and for the safety of those men.

I'm glad I went thought the last hard class in 1979-SFC Craig Maxim's version of selection. 50% attrition? Then it was over 75% and all were Airborne qualified and there was no such thing as Nintendo! No gimmicks back then (i.e. tab, issued serial numbered knives, regiment crap etc.). The Army was twice as big and group was three times smaller. Don't even tell me the standards have been raised. I'm sick of seeing chubby group guys and old men graduating? WTF, over?
Yeah, I finished Selection in Dec 08, selected. I'm in the Q now, and I couldn't agree more. As a SSG with over 3 years already in the Sandbox, it's discouraging to have been selected only to be in the Q Course with some complete douchebags. 90% of the guys are awesome, but like anywhere else, there's always that 10% that should have never been Selected. It's not about a beret or a tab. If you want that, go buy it at the local surplus store. It's about the way of life, the brotherhood.

Ok, serach for 37F/38B Class 01-08 Graduation Video on youtube. Thats the training I went through. Same training Co. the SF candidates are in. Same obstacle course. Or better yet, look up 02-07 Grad Video CA and PSYOP. Tell me you can run that with a rifle in your hands. ARSOF all the way baby...
personally i believe the para rescue is like the rescue swimmers of the coast guard....yeah they are some of the most elite hard ass guys out there but not situated for combat any were near the elite units of the navy-army-marines...FR, Seals, and Sf Gb will do damage. ive never been a big fan of the chairforce...hell the attrition rate is like 6.5 percent right now. its around 13-14 for the other 3 and way higher for the coast guard. i even heard they got there own latrines in basic?
Pararescue does water rescue but also go into a hot zone and extract wonded. all branches spec ops are important but I'm going to become a pj oneday so i still say their the best. These things we do that others may live is the pj moto.
Marines do have selection and assessment for MARSOC, it is very similar to this; instead of reinventing the wheel they learned from this process. The Marines include a swim qualification in their assessmet though.

I'm glad I went thought the last hard class in 1979-SFC Craig Maxim's version of selection. 50% attrition? Then it was over 75% and all were Airborne qualified and there was no such thing as Nintendo! No gimmicks back then (i.e. tab, issued serial numbered knives, regiment crap etc.). The Army was twice as big and group was three times smaller. Don't even tell me the standards have been raised. I'm sick of seeing chubby group guys and old men graduating? WTF, over?

Yeah, I finished Selection in Dec 08, selected. I'm in the Q now, and I couldn't agree more. As a SSG with over 3 years already in the Sandbox, it's discouraging to have been selected only to be in the Q Course with some complete douchebags. 90% of the guys are awesome, but like anywhere else, there's always that 10% that should have never been Selected. It's not about a beret or a tab. If you want that, go buy it at the local surplus store. It's about the way of life, the brotherhood.

simple answer for that. the marines are sent to afghanistan and iraq first to kill the insurgency and taliban and scare the shit outta the civillians because there so fucking well trained and brutal. then once its all done they send the army there to talk to the people and make them see that its ok so the insurgents wont attack marines but they will the army because there not as well trained. so there secrutre it army comes and shit starts happin again we tell em the marines are comin back .

SFAS, which is what Discovery is documenting on, isn't even the real training. Just a weeding out process, a mind game. The whole thing with the "gun and ladder" part is just to fuck with the candidates, anything to stress them out with more things to think about.
TL;DR: Like I said on the other video, Mind game to weed out the weak.

Wow, I can't wait to see this. Getting this kind of footage and insight into SFAS is unprecedented. Special Forces (Green Beret) selection and training has always been very secretive, unlike Navy SEALs selection and training like BUDs.

personally i believe the para rescue is like the rescue swimmers of the coast guard....yeah they are some of the most elite hard ass guys out there but not situated for combat any were near the elite units of the navy-army-marines...FR, Seals, and Sf Gb will do damage. ive never been a big fan of the chairforce...hell the attrition rate is like 6.5 percent right now. its around 13-14 for the other 3 and way higher for the coast guard. i even heard they got there own latrines in basic?

Pararescue does water rescue but also go into a hot zone and extract wonded. all branches spec ops are important but I'm going to become a pj oneday so i still say their the best. These things we do that others may live is the pj moto.

Marines do have selection and assessment for MARSOC, it is very similar to this; instead of reinventing the wheel they learned from this process. The Marines include a swim qualification in their assessmet though.
