i love watching the albert hall goodbye cream shows on vhs,dvd whatever because my kids and my grand kids can see me rockin along in the audience, great memories.
@bamboosa You`re right my friend. I love Fender guitars, but for a three piece band, one needs the fat, full, heavy sound of a Gibson. Nothing better than a Gibson Les Paul out of a Marshall amp. I know all my young friends have their own newer favourites, but I`m telling the truth. It`s like comparing a Strataverius to some violin made in Japan.
I didn't realised that until you mentioned it...I am not as old are but I am a big Clapton fan and heard his earlier recordings with CREAM playing Gibson guitars and they do sound "better"...the strat seemed a little sckeetchy with the song... not enough "power" it seemed
Is this the ceremony where the CCR incident happened, where cook and clifford got into a fight with fogerty cause he didnt want them on stage with him, and they both walked out?
and I'm so glad !! "it seems to me that rock n roll should never be respectable.. robbie robertson pointed out that minor miracles take place in here. Ive been reunited with two people i love very dearly. yesterday we played together for the first time in 25 years!"LONG LIVE CREAM!
@boogster,you're right about Yes and Crimson,ELP,but Mahavisnu was a 70's band, still a good observation.ELP has reformed from time to time as well as Yes,The original Crimson lineup was fantastic, later lineups although interesting lacked the intensity of the Giles,Fripp,Lake collaboration.I know 1 thing when Clapton,Bruce and Baker get together,a lot of magic happens. The power of Cream is incredible, and those guys seem to reach a higher level when they play together.
Jack has calmed down, doesn't over-sing and go ballistic. I miss Ginger flipping out like Animal on the Muppet show. Eric has always been sublime, now he makes that baby moan and cry.
This is beautiful, moving, powerful, in the moment, they are almost shy working themselves up and almost afraid to let it out in the beginning....nobody can top them as individual musicians and as a unit they are that WALL that Eric talked about....a miracle, a force of nature. It has to be them three, not anyone else not missing anyone.
Everyone has at least one or two absolutely pivotal moments in life that instantly open them up and provide an awakening or revelation that alters them in every way going forward! For me that moment happened at age 13 when a rough-edged fellow Boy Scout invited me over and dropped the needle on Cream's first record. As the roaring power chords of Toad entered my brain I was forever altered and changed for the better -- and my love affair with quality music continues to this very day!
3 guys. Old guys. Guys that should be a shell of what they once were, after years of abuse and aging. Guys you would give a free pass to out of respect for former greatness. 3 guys that can not only still play, but sound as good as they did in remembered recordings made 35 years before.
@tomf429 To think that there are people out there that liked cream back then but think they should hang it up now. To them I say, you must be into that (C)RAP now a days huh? I appreciate what you said, THANK YOU!!!
I disagree with Deagedrumzz on a technical point. There are individuals of a group from the 60s who are still with us but not playing together. Mick Taylor is still very much alive and so is Charlie Watts. Mick played most of 69 with them (Jones was artistically out of the band as far back as the RnR Circus in late 68). And what a replacement Taylor would be over the plastic Ron Wood. But Taylor was ripped off bigtime by the Glimmers so I'm sure it won't happen, which is tragic for all of us.
@tmwnat actually the guitar only really sounds wierd because of the more raw sound of the fretless bass, and I don't think that clapton had the whole make-my-fender-sound-like-a-gibson thing down yet. But the stuff for their full reunions is really good.
I'm going to break this down now,CREAM must reform again. WHY? Because there are no groups from the 60's with their original members all still alive,no Jimi Hendrix experience,Beatles,Original Who,Stones,Procol Harum,Pink Floyd,Byrds,Doors,Kinks ETC. And I might add that Clapton with Cream is at the top of his game. And the band is the reason for every group that came after them, they set the rules of engagement for all the progressive groups, and JAZZ Rock FUSION bands.

@Deagledrumzz They did it once (well twice if you include 93') already, I'm sure you know. They're not doing it again. I rather like being able to not see them as a young guy who's into their music. Adds a lot to their myth and mystique. Sure I'd buy tickets if they toured (which they won't) but if they don't, it all adds to the legend.
@TheHockeyCentral I'd still love to see them do it again, these guys make magic happen. They're a force unlike any other, and Clapton is at his best with Cream.Ginger Baker makes sure of that. CREAM needs to roll it again.

@MrBACKWOODSPROPHET Rush i think are the premier power trio, but hard to comapre to Cream since music so vastly different. Electric blues and Rush's progressive rock sounds are apples and oranges, and both equally are great in their realms, but as difficult as it is to say, Geddy, Alex and Neil are the three best musicians i have ever heard in 50 plus years
lol agree, hahaha back int he 60s these guys were the best of the best on there instruments. I mean besides jimi eric was the top, same with jack and ginger! ALl people wanted to see was them soloing they didn't even care about singing or anything like that!
And don't forget how heavily they influenced him... He only agreed to tour England on the promise that he'd meet the members of Cream. He went to a show of theirs and jammed with the band using Jack Bruce's bass amp.
One of the best dvds is Cream at Royal Albert Hall. They did 3 nights there and took the best of the three and made the dvd. They are definitely much more rehearsed and polished than this event and in DTS 5.1 sound, it is better than ever. Clapton is the only one who looks healthy. All the drugs and partying took it's toll on these guys. Still sound good for their age.
Christ - it was brief reunion in front of cameras and people sitting at dinner tables - hardly conducive to a full rockout - and yet they remain simply brilliant (if perhaps a little muted). Great stuff.
I see some negative comments here...Look people, you are welcome to your own opinions,of course;but to those of us who grew up digging this music, this is just fantastic!

sounds lijke shit why???cause he left his goddaqmn sg home , give buddy holly back his stra you play an sg with the cream, looked like a college professor up there break a fucking sweat eric , lazy ass performance
some of you critics...I don't know you...who here has done anything like 'you look beautiful tonight' or the heart breaking one about seeing his boy in heaven, then say eric is boring without cream...time to trashcan your egos, people. I'm just amazed to see Ginger Baker alive??? guy must have done freighter loads of drugs in the day...now hes wearing a tie?!?! holy xxxx....love ya, lovers not fade
he could have used an LP, but the gibson/marshall thing gets old after eric used it for a few years and then EVERYBODY used it afterwards. the strat gives the songs a new perspective, it's more versatile than a les paul. he doesn't sound like henrdrix w/ a strat, but anyone can walk onstage w/ a les paul and get eric's tone.
about all of you arguing about the beatles vs cream....the beatles music is too girly...cream were hard rock n blues all the way, better musicians....only reason why beatles were as successfull is because of millions of 12 yr old girls
Althought he was playing blues on Cream, the harder, fuzzier and bigger sound of his guitar from the Cream years suits way better with a Les Paul, a Firebird or Es335. And Marshall stacks.
yea LesPaul has the growling sound evry guitar company has been trying to copy for years ,I own a Gibson LesPaul '60`s Classic',its hands down the best instrument `Ive played in my life. Some artist have a hard time reaching the 22nd fret so they use Strat.
Hendrix would use an old fuzzface - That's why it was so agressive.. If Eric had used fuzz pedals in this particular concert, his strat would sound closer to the good old days, but it wouldn't be the same anyway. I own both strats and LPs (by the way, RIP Les Paul) and I'm talking about what defined the Cream sound in the 60s. Strats won't sustain and have the same bottom end of LPs - strats are great for other applications, but not for this one.
I guess your right. the cream sound was with gibsons, and strats just sound different. sometimes i wish Clapton would pull out that old ES-335 again. and RIP Les Paul.
yeah he,s not like mark knopfler mark begous hes been jousing his old gibson les paul and old amp that you can hear in money for nothing again but eric is not like that he only plays fender he hes give away the old gibson fool guitar to a friend and he still hes that guitar but gibson is and stays always the cream sound it got somting fender dont hes;-)

boring is what it is. Stop boring me Eric. I can only stand your playing when your with Cream.
I'd rather listen to sloppy Jimmy P. He picks better notes and more colorful effects. Pentatonic spentatonic. Overall Cream have more energy here than the 2005 gigs. I think JAck sings a little better in 05 despite his voice being older and froggier. Ginger has more energy here. I listened to the 05 quite a bit. "We're going wrong" is the big hit for me.
Yes, Cream were all excellent musicians...but...there is no comparison between the Beatles and Cream vis a vis their musical output and depth/breadth of their respective impact. I love Cream, but they are in a totally different league. It's really not fair to Cream to compare them to the Beatles!
I can't belive you people are actually comparing Cream to the Beatles - both The Beatles and Cream introduced me to a different kind of music when I started to play guitar - The Beatles were an amazing band in the studio - but as players they are nothing compared to cream - They are both the best in their own right so stop being bitches and enjoy!
I admire Cream as one of the greatest band ever, great performers, but The Beatles had no comparation, they're untouchables, and everybody knows it, it's a fact!!
McCartney can play anything under the sun, Ringo brought drumming into the modern era, Lennon wrote wonderfully in depth and emotional songs, and Harrison was one of the best guitarists ever.
If anything they were equally as talented, and equally as egotistic, and their awesome levels were equivalent to each others'.
The Beatles never got anywhere close to playing at Cream's level. Beatles were good pop/rock songwriters, but in terms of playing, Cream were leagues ahead.
When Clapton commented on the three of them being together (on acid) at his house - that was in 1976. It wasn't a planned meeting per Clapton, it just so happened that all three were at a music company office in London at the same time. They decided to spend a few hours together at Clapton's house and Clapton's girlfriend at the time (Patti) took a picture of the three of them. Patti recounts the story in her book and says something like "the anger between them had mellowed".
Agree. Their songs were originally played with Gibson Guitars. The solo that Eric played on White Room at the farewell concert in 1968 was on a Gibson Firebird. Never heard anything like that ever.
I don't believe it's the sound quality as much as it is keeping the beat and the groove. It's a hard thing to describe, but you know when it's there and when it's not. Thanks for the reply.
Friggin' awesome. Seeing Clapton playing his old stuff-his best stuff-is fantastic. I read an interview he gave once and was asked why he doesn't play his old stuff anymore and he said "I've already done that!". This is as rare of a glimpse into his past as you will ever see.

lol agree, hahaha back int he 60s these guys were the best of the best on there instruments. I mean besides jimi eric was the top, same with jack and ginger! ALl people wanted to see was them soloing they didn't even care about singing or anything like that!
geoff101001 2 years ago
@Deagledrumzz
And don't forget how heavily they influenced him... He only agreed to tour England on the promise that he'd meet the members of Cream. He went to a show of theirs and jammed with the band using Jack Bruce's bass amp.

@Deagledrumzz Lets not forget Rory Gallagher ;D lol

One of the best dvds is Cream at Royal Albert Hall. They did 3 nights there and took the best of the three and made the dvd. They are definitely much more rehearsed and polished than this event and in DTS 5.1 sound, it is better than ever. Clapton is the only one who looks healthy. All the drugs and partying took it's toll on these guys. Still sound good for their age.
kravin99 2 years ago 3
what do you mean? -- Baker looks healthier than he did in 1968, Bruce just looks a little older.....

It's just the video quality. Clapton has a much better tone live.
hendrixkixas 2 years ago
Christ - it was brief reunion in front of cameras and people sitting at dinner tables - hardly conducive to a full rockout - and yet they remain simply brilliant (if perhaps a little muted). Great stuff.

they sound like a shitty covers band. they were the inventors of the gibson+marshall rock sound, godammit. Why do they insist on sucking now??
Compared to LedZep they look (and sound) like whiney old wimps.

some of you critics...I don't know you...who here has done anything like 'you look beautiful tonight' or the heart breaking one about seeing his boy in heaven, then say eric is boring without cream...time to trashcan your egos, people. I'm just amazed to see Ginger Baker alive??? guy must have done freighter loads of drugs in the day...now hes wearing a tie?!?! holy xxxx....love ya, lovers not fade
carloscarlos13 2 years ago 6
he could have used an LP, but the gibson/marshall thing gets old after eric used it for a few years and then EVERYBODY used it afterwards. the strat gives the songs a new perspective, it's more versatile than a les paul. he doesn't sound like henrdrix w/ a strat, but anyone can walk onstage w/ a les paul and get eric's tone.
jb4427 2 years ago
strats are amazing. i love 'em, as you can tell by my screename

about all of you arguing about the beatles vs cream....the beatles music is too girly...cream were hard rock n blues all the way, better musicians....only reason why beatles were as successfull is because of millions of 12 yr old girls
tatethompson1234 2 years ago
really dont want to argue but.... you obviously don't know that much about the beatles or thier songs. but wahts wrong with liking both bands?

mythbuster1991 2 years ago
I only think Eric should have used les pauls there.
marcelcruzeiro 2 years ago
yeah eric sounds at his best when hes using the sg or es335 and les pauls...i dont like his strat,,too weak
tatethompson1234 2 years ago
It's cool when he's playing pure blues, like that album with BB King... but when it comes to POWER blues, it's something else. Come on, Eric!
marcelcruzeiro 2 years ago
thats all Eric ever play`s is blues, his whole career is founded on his knowledge of the pentatonic (or blues) scale, kinda sad really ,good guitarist
PAULOcbi 2 years ago
Althought he was playing blues on Cream, the harder, fuzzier and bigger sound of his guitar from the Cream years suits way better with a Les Paul, a Firebird or Es335. And Marshall stacks.
Strat sounds too tame in that type of music.
marcelcruzeiro 2 years ago
yea LesPaul has the growling sound evry guitar company has been trying to copy for years ,I own a Gibson LesPaul '60`s Classic',its hands down the best instrument `Ive played in my life. Some artist have a hard time reaching the 22nd fret so they use Strat.
PAULOcbi 2 years ago
I totally agree. I've watched a lot of old footage and that is mostly what I have seen is (Gibson's) .
Jack's SG Bass and Eric's ES335, SG, or Firebird and LP's. His Strat pale's in comparison to those aformentioned guitars. LONG LIVE THE CREAM.
helterskelter1178 2 years ago
Hendrix played a strat and didn't sound tame. everyone should play strats. but then again, i'm extremely biased.
stratfan7 2 years ago
Hendrix would use an old fuzzface - That's why it was so agressive.. If Eric had used fuzz pedals in this particular concert, his strat would sound closer to the good old days, but it wouldn't be the same anyway. I own both strats and LPs (by the way, RIP Les Paul) and I'm talking about what defined the Cream sound in the 60s. Strats won't sustain and have the same bottom end of LPs - strats are great for other applications, but not for this one.
marcelcruzeiro 2 years ago
I guess your right. the cream sound was with gibsons, and strats just sound different. sometimes i wish Clapton would pull out that old ES-335 again. and RIP Les Paul.
stratfan7 2 years ago 4
yeah he,s not like mark knopfler mark begous hes been jousing his old gibson les paul and old amp that you can hear in money for nothing again but eric is not like that he only plays fender he hes give away the old gibson fool guitar to a friend and he still hes that guitar but gibson is and stays always the cream sound it got somting fender dont hes;-)

boring is what it is.

It's really not fair to Cream to compare them to the Beatles!
freespyrit 2 years ago
personally i think the beatles wernt that good and im from liverpool cream is proper rock n rollllllllllllllll
cam123cha 2 years ago
I can't belive you people are actually comparing Cream to the Beatles - both The Beatles and Cream introduced me to a different kind of music when I started to play guitar - The Beatles were an amazing band in the studio - but as players they are nothing compared to cream - They are both the best in their own right so stop being bitches and enjoy!

They

I thought Keith Richards used to play the stuff George Harrison couldn't? Or something like that.
phddddd 2 years ago
The Beatles never got anywhere close to playing at Cream's level. Beatles were good pop/rock songwriters, but in terms of playing, Cream were leagues ahead.
EVfnWls 2 years ago 4
I have to say, I think Cream made some music that was just about as good, or better than The Beatle's. Not that I don't like The Beatles ;D
