Thanks for a overview of a Porsche 911, not review a 997.2 /w PDK. I don't want to hear about rear engine driving dynamics or trivial details like the right hand side ignition. Explain why the car makes you feel the way you do while driving it. Steering feel, handling details, and improvements over the previous generation are the things you should try to convey in your review.
i liked this review ...most of the youtube reviewers should realize that we want to know how the car feels if we wanted a spec-sheet there r tones of website where i'd be easier and faster
@sexking83 No kidding. :) There is no comparison. Apples to oranges. But compared to other world class sports cars the only reason you'd buy a 911 is for the engineering. It's boring. No character. Not really that attractive either. No sex appeal. Typical of German cars. We're brainwashed into liking the look. Now take an Aston Martin DBS...that is a car to own!!! Excellence in engineering. Original. And one of the best looking cars IMHO. Elegant and sporty at the same time.
@AGC828 although an DBS is a good car, and sexy as hell- it lacks the precision and is as a result just that a GT. This 911 embodies the words Sports Car! JF you should've told these kiddo's that Porsche tried to veer away from the rear engine but the enthusiasts stopped buying porsche's because they weren't the 911. Take the 968 and 928- both flops and yet still engineering marvel's covering things like the transaxle transmission... Heritage is everything- there is no Substitute!
Having an engine in the back is a bad idea. Older 911s were notorious for fishtailing out before traction control, torque vectoring etc. That is why most car journalists feel the Caymen with it's mid-engine layout is a superior handling car.
jf is a major choch. having the engine in the back is shitty compared to front or mid engine. porsche has made huge strides in perfecting the rear engine design and the 911 is a great car but you cant say the layout is better than front or mid.
you know that building this car 2 years after the first world war makes it a post-war car in a way. not mentioning the achievement of organizing the material needed for building this car.
And the only Porsches that I care are the 911 Turbo (Coupe/Cabriolet) and the Cayenne. The rest of the Porsche lineup sucks including the C4S. My most favorite Porsche would probably be the 911 Turbo 996.
@ratmtbola Don't really care about performance because all 911s perform great. I just don't like the C4S along with the regular 911 because it doesn't have that spoiler on the back like you get on the Turbo or on a GT3. You only get that spoiler that pops out whenever you go on speed.
I thinks it looks a bit imbalanced without a normal spoiler on the back. Same goes with the Panamera. It just looks like.... well like a beetle with a squashed front facia -__________-
@ratmtbola I am because I praise its performance and how they didn't ditch the Rear engine Rear wheel drive layout despite its problems when it comes to oversteer. It's just that having no spoiler kind of spoils the whole silhouette of a 911 making it more of a squashed beetle. Kind of like how I hate the new Range Rover's Grill and side air vents despite its off road capabilities and its first class cabin ;)
@ratmtbola Depends on the person really. I'm sure Porsche enthusiasts love the classic 911 silhouette.
I'm not a big fan of Porsche's design and I'm one of those guys who liked the 996 design (which was different) as much as Porsche fans didn't like it.
Most of my favorite Porsche's are the Cayenne and the 911 996 Turbo but the most special Porsche that I fancy is the 2010 Sport Classic. All of them excluding the Cayenne has spoilers ;)
@sweetrayatgmail Actually, aren't 911's notorious for OVER-steer? Since the motor is mounted BEHIND the rear axel (rear engine RWD) as apposed to for example a Cayman (S) which has a Mid-engine RWD setup and thus arguably better weight balance and neutral chassis dynamics. I remember hearing lots of stories of 911s especially in the 80's of horrible over-steer as the back end swung around like a pendulum. AWD and other tech-nannies were put in place to "tame" this beast or so the story goes.
Great review. I agree... Stats are everywhere so do your own research for that. I read the trick to Porsche handling was "slow in, fast out"... That yah the tail WILL step out more with the rear-mount engine. But hell, any car with some power is gonna get tail happy if you get gas happy. I get gas happy if I overdo it on the Mexican food.
Porsche lovers out there as myself....QUESTION. The problems Porsche 996/997's had w/engine and IMS failure, that I know of in the earlier 2000 years. I want to pick one up, but, if someone could kindly shed some light on this for me, I would GREATLY APPRECIATE it!! What should I be looking for? Or NOT looking for.
HEY, I want my dream car, and I have to be armed with some good information.
Wait, If you were in Germany filming FLD 1000, then why did you not give Derek D the C4S to lap the ring in? Surely that would be a more appropriate tool to attack a race track in, or did you just give him the Picasso for a good laugh?
@Forza432 I suppose that this was a press car just for a short review ... and I doubt that Porsche would allow some small, rather unknown internet show (when compared to some of the "big" reviewers like caranddriver, insideline etc.) to take it on a race track ... especially with a non-pro driver like derek d who never drove on the ring before in his life and probably never drove on any other racetrack either (atleast not in a car of 911 caliber)
so if you made this in germany... why didnt DerekD drive this? I know that you had a 1000 dollar budget and stuff but if you had this in germany why did you make derek drive that van? just wondering
So let me get this straight...you guys have enough money in your budget for J.F. to go to germany and play around in a Carrera 4S, but you couldn't have done that for the 1000th episode? you're just screwing with me now right? I love FLD but i'm really not getting if you guys know what your viewer demographic is.
Hey J.F, just so you know, i remember the Scuderia having an extremely fast paddle shifting transmission. Its obviously down to the milliseconds at this point, but still.
Great review... Far too many reviews focus in stat's 0-60,top speed etc... Rather than focusing on the way the car stirs your emotions, and how much fun it is to drive in real world situations.
@gripracer Wow! We had to see Derek D in a garbage minivan and FLD had access to a Carrera 911. All FLD viewers and I would like to see the porsche footage.
@orochimaruisugly No, it's another 911. Don't know which, but it's an older model. A 964 maybe? Try to pause it when it shows the front. The headlights are the classic bug-eye shape, and the hood lines behind the lights are the classic tubular shape.
this review is absurd... the porsche as we know it started with a tatra, the tatra made design made the beetle.. ferdinand did what he did with both as the inspiration....and adding a boxer AWD in the front or rear has an equal chance...this dufus does not have this story exactly straight.
please review more cars that we can own not only expensive ones, i mean i like these but i wish there would be more about less cost ones. Also It says weekly reviews, that hasn't been true since summer...
this is how all FLD reviews should be. The standard numbers are pointless: by the time fld gets a car everyone knows all its numbers and signature features (I don't need to hear about the auto-revmatch yet again). However what the car is like to drive and live with, and why anyone should care about its existence is far more interesting.
Personally, the best 911 body style was that of the type 930 thru the early 996....when it was still oil cooled. I know exactly what you mean when describing going into a turn and make the car squat for traction. I've got an early 90's turbo and its the best car I've driven. And none of that electronic stability control crap. Such a pleasing car to drive. Everyone has to experience it.
@swinglow33 if you own early 911 you should get your facts right. All 911s up to 993 model were AIRCOOLED NOT oil cooled, same as the Beetle. From 996 models all were water cooled.
i worked at a Porsche dealership temporarily and even tho i made crap money, i throughly enjoyed driving the cars. if i had to explain it in one word it would be addicting. i hope to one day afford a Cayman S to relive those days.
YaY FLDtours is back!! i really wanna see you guys talk about the Mini Countyman. You know cars that are Underated and have good MPG. Not just Super Cars that i might probably never own....
