This don't look too bad, a few cars cutting each other up but on the whole fine. Anyone thinking this is bad should visit India. Now the driving out there is crazy.
That is nothing, my wife is from ChongQing China. I have been there 3 times, this is kids stuff compared to this. In ChongQing, the taxi drivers are considered some of the best in the world.
thing about chinese driving - it looks terrible until you join in, then it quickly starts to make sense, it flows, and it's fun. only thing is, when you go home to the west you keep driving like that, and everyone thinks your'e insane and a complete w**ger. but you just get on with it........... that's fightingtorque!
Yes it FLOWS, in the expense of lives! That's only acceptable if you put priority on travel duration over human safety. And since there's more human being than needed in China, this is what they deserve.
Btw, the streets are better than those in most of the Middle East. See my videos for what traffic in Turkey looks like.
im in shanghai...all of us drive like we own the road. we will cut u off b/c we think we are better than the person driving behind us. and just like some1 said, bigger car, bigger rights
as an american i have to agree with VladimirBurn , its kool , no big acciendents have i seen if you expect to have you own values & culture to be expressed by those drivers or people around you to be like in your country , what the heck are you doing in china , to expect western or other values in china is just plain ignorance
I'm from Russia living in Shanghai. All I can say, that we (foreigners) get only the illusion of a dangerous traffic here in China. But surprisingly it's all cool. I've been with my moped on the streets of Shanghai for 'bout 3 years and I saw very few times somebody got hit. But if somebody gets hit, it's not that bad. And if you doing something wrong on the street, you'll just hear honking or ringing ... they won't curse you or even hit you :)
Also, new drivers or not, that's not the point. The best candidate for a good driver is a driver that has no prior experience. Then, government has to impose strict rules for becoming a driving instruction who then in turn makes sure you don't get your license until you're really good and safe on the streets.
@MuddiModeltFuerKIK I dare them not to obey the traffic light in Shanghai. Their driver license would get suspended in no time. In the video, the red light lit AFTER the car passed stop white line which means the car is OK to keep going according to Chinese traffic regulations.
As for cars vs people, what do you expect in a city with 20mil population and 5mil vehicles? You could spent a day just to cross the city with "proper" way of driving.
Europeans often fail to understand there is no rule stipulating cars must wait for pedestrians to cross the zebra lane first in China. It is to the contrary.
hey!!its not about if you have rules or not!! its education! for the pedestrians, its like when you open the door and its a woman behind you , i let the woman go first!!
The rule in China's traffic is actually larger vehicles take priority before smaller vehicles, which also enjoy priority before pedestrians. Chinese are new drivers moreover.
bushit, u let the woman go first, that's ur culture, if u wanna judge a thing, just put in the right environment,u think thats called educated, thats western culture!!! not global culture
Oh yeah? I am european, I came to Shanghai one year ago and I can not get used the culture of driving here. Rule is simple. The bigger vehicle the more rights you have. JUNGLE
heh! I have lived in Shanghai for the last 4 years and trying to cross the street with the traffic like this is crazy! But, that is shanghai for you; the worst drivers in china! Cultural thing really...SH people are sometimes quite arrogant & selfish, so they drive the same way!
I've been to China 5 times, to the cities of Shenzhen (twice), Lanzhou (once), Shanghai (3 times), Beijing (once) and to Guilin (once). My wife is from Shanghai. I've been to New York, Houston and Los Angeles. The traffic in Shanghai is far worse than any U.S. city and the driving is "without rules". It's crazy. This video is good, but does not truly show the chaos and true craziness and amount of traffic in Shanghai........
In New York City I had a Chinese (looking) driver try to bang me out of my lane on the Whitestone Bridge because I would not slow down to let him in, and his family was in the car (a nice condition one). Now I understand why. Your film does not inspire me to trek to China. that will be your loss, china is a fun place, just let the locals drive
Yes, I agree truly with some of your remarks. But just should be flexible. Anyway, don't be so mean about such a fantastic metropolis in China. Everytime a taxi driver being so skillful just for saving your time and money. Otherwise we can pass time as we like, why not? There is no one that should be blamed as nothing can really be perfect anywhere.

In china, there are so,so,so much traffic but hardly gets blocked cuz drivers are alert all the time and used every bit of the road. UK drivers are too careful so it blocks up all the time. I think most of u would agree with me. Also in china if u cross the road and see a car heading your way just stop. They wont hit you, they will swirve around u. Trust me, they are good drivers.
Yep, that's very true. Especially for a bus driver they have to be. They are carrying passengers. Although I do get the occasional accidents. Accidents do happen.
You would be crazy to drive in Shanghai if you're not from there, is my opinion. But the traffic thing... it's part of the Shanghai charm. Everybody almost gets 'run over' when they first arrive. As was I. Rite of passage. LOL.
i expected more based on other people's stories and the lengthy description of this video. 3.5 out of 4 minutes of this video is just boring crap that needs to be cut. you could have left like maybe the last 30 seconds to prove your point. the rest is irrelevant crap. i can't believe 60,000 people viewed this boring shit.
I'm currenly living in Shanghai, and this video doesn't capture how frustrating it is, for a westerner to drive here. Either they have very different rules of the road or as in my opinion, most people don't know them. They weave upbelievably from lane to lane. Most of the millions for electric motorbikes never us their lights at night, drive straight through intersection, and you can't hear them coming. Also, a lot of them drive on the pavement, to avoid having to drive on the street.
need more driver education. china's economy is booming, more ppl will buy cars and own cars. but they need to increase driver and road user driving education.
Shit, I work in New York City and Long Island EVERYDAY and literally have to sit in HOURS worth of traffic on the George Washington Bridge and on the Cross Bronx Express. The Cross Bronx Express makes this look like a pleasant Sunday drive.
I was living in Shanghai and I have a car and drive everyday. It is no problem. You just need to be smart and know the roads. For example NEVER take YanAn tunnel during rush hour. Your better off driving the extra distance to the FuXing. No Problems.
its not so bad actually from ur video.coz in some peak time will be more terrible!!
bt i dont think some traffic in european are better.coz im in ireland now.i cant understand that in the motorway, they have traffic jam!! even there is no traffic accident!
the world needs to address the problem population crisis. We cnt have these m.class ppl buying more cars... why do these ppl breed so much> whats wrong with them
Actually it's not "cars vs. pedestrians"... it's simply "every man for himself", with no concept of priority...
As for the others' disgusting, ignorant comments, you start by going there, experiencing it by yourself, FIRST, THEN you maybe will have a right to say something. But otherwise, STFU.
Yeah, but who knows how long he stayed? Who knows how much he's been exposed to it, and even, what he saw or understood of it ? Sooooo... Anyways, I'm living here in Shanghai right now, and I do stand by my point. Not saying the traffic is good, FAR from it. But I still think it's simply that it's every man for himself and "nothing personal" in traffic here.
I love Shanghai. It's the greatest. From Shopping to food to the people, if you don't know what you're talking about then dont say anything. Stereotypical comments such as wheres the rickshaw will not be tolerated. Thank you and have a great day.
Another shade of Communist Gray. Why not film human rights violations in China? Makes Guantanamo Bay look like a summer camp. And don't get me started on the Olympics. Let's party like it's 1936.
what are u talking about, who says China is worse, I have been stayed in many country around the world. I dont think China is worse than the rest, in contrast, I do think China has the potentiality to be one of the best county in the world.
I did NOT say China's traffic is the worst. I said IF IF IF you think Shanghai is bad, the other provinces/cities are worse than Shanghai - I DID NOT SAY CHINA'S TRAFFIC IS THE WORST.
Well this city is twice to three times the size of NYC and the flows pretty well for a city of such size. London is not even half the size and is atrocious for traffic. They aredoing something right in Shanghai.
This looked like the outskirts of Manhattan in a way- you know the areas where the tall buildings get sparce, and the houses intertwine. But, in downtown NYC, cars are less than an inch apart during rush hour by the tunnels. I liked the neon signs (whatever they said), the big TV-type screen on the building, and the hoops-designs going into the tunnels. I agree with legalxchech.
traffic moves much smoother and faster in shanghai than any stateside i've ever been too. plus there's no road rage. we're a bunch of whiny babies when it comes to stuff like that. survival of the fittest. i like the mentality of "if you're too stupid and you get hurt then it's your fault" dumbass.
Omg i would hate to live in China man! They cant drive for crap i feel so bad for that girl not one of them yielded for her! Then they try to do this in America wtf!
Different society have different rules. In the States pedestrians first but in China vehicles first. Theres just too many people in China if you let one pedestrian cross hundreds will follow therefore its wise for pedestrians to watch for cars instead of the other way around.
It should be that way in Los Angeles too. Car first, pedestrian second. Too many assholes in LA, one of them needs to get run over by a bus with metal spikes on the tires.
its the same as in india... such a big population, people dont give a fuck about a human life, that is why they dont show any effort to bring any order into the traffic
omfg all of you shut up chinese people suck at driveng. thay swich lanse every five seconds and thay dont have any fucking traffic lights i mean come on if you have that many fucking people in one place wouldent it be a good idea to have some fucking order. There all over the streets like there lost and retarted or something and i know there smart and all but when it comes to driving there fucking tards.
It's all because Chinese people are smart and skillful, I rarely see them getting into accident. Plus, it's such a big country with much larger population than USA, and the accident rates are not even as bad as the USA. They have total control over the cars, they drive like how they walk. But just never hit each other.
Last year 100000 people died in traffic accidents in China - the highest per capita in the world!!! Chinese control the cars, but don't give a damn about the others on the road... and there's so many of those others hehe.
I hope you are being sarcastic. I'm Chinese and I hear about accidents in China all the time. You wouldn't believe how some of these accidents even happen.

Let's party like it's 1936.

why they have so many "wake up stripes" on the street?
m4rs12 5 years ago
If you think Shanghai's bad then you obviously haven't been to other cities/provinces. Other parts of China are far worse.
sayshellz 5 years ago
what are u talking about, who says China is worse, I have been stayed in many country around the world. I dont think China is worse than the rest, in contrast, I do think China has the potentiality to be one of the best county in the world.
hotaudi 5 years ago
I did NOT say China's traffic is the worst. I said IF IF IF you think Shanghai is bad, the other provinces/cities are worse than Shanghai - I DID NOT SAY CHINA'S TRAFFIC IS THE WORST.

Well this city is twice to three times the size of NYC and the flows pretty well for a city of such size. London is not even half the size and is atrocious for traffic. They aredoing something right in Shanghai.
wot321 5 years ago
This looked like the outskirts of Manhattan in a way- you know the areas where the tall buildings get sparce, and the houses intertwine. But, in downtown NYC, cars are less than an inch apart during rush hour by the tunnels. I liked the neon signs (whatever they said), the big TV-type screen on the building, and the hoops-designs going into the tunnels. I agree with legalxchech.

traffic looks very orderly to me. much better than paris.
pacoelvago 5 years ago
traffic moves much smoother and faster in shanghai than any stateside i've ever been too. plus there's no road rage. we're a bunch of whiny babies when it comes to stuff like that. survival of the fittest. i like the mentality of "if you're too stupid and you get hurt then it's your fault" dumbass.

Xangai, but could be any big city in the world. Xiè Xiè nimen dou!

Why the hell did I just watch this whole video? Noone banged a car against any pedestrians, or even against any cars... fuck this.

Omg i would hate to live in China man! They cant drive for crap i feel so bad for that girl not one of them yielded for her! Then they try to do this in America wtf!
sakai17 5 years ago
Different society have different rules. In the States pedestrians first but in China vehicles first. Theres just too many people in China if you let one pedestrian cross hundreds will follow therefore its wise for pedestrians to watch for cars instead of the other way around.
Zergcerebrates 5 years ago
It should be that way in Los Angeles too. Car first, pedestrian second. Too many assholes in LA, one of them needs to get run over by a bus with metal spikes on the tires.

note: I can't see any rude or offensive things in the video.

you're one to talk. learn english first then talk smack about other ethnicities.
1mtk 5 years ago
Ekat you're exagerrating, its because pedestrians want to take opportunity of the crowd to cross. Drivers need to think of a counter-offensive.
nathango 5 years ago
But china also has one fifth the world population
Maxpower4 5 years ago
It's all because Chinese people are smart and skillful, I rarely see them getting into accident. Plus, it's such a big country with much larger population than USA, and the accident rates are not even as bad as the USA. They have total control over the cars, they drive like how they walk. But just never hit each other.
captaindk 5 years ago
Wrong, that is bullshit and you know it. China has the highest auto deathrates of all countries. They seriously need to enforce traffic laws.
nemasen 5 years ago
Last year 100000 people died in traffic accidents in China - the highest per capita in the world!!! Chinese control the cars, but don't give a damn about the others on the road... and there's so many of those others hehe.
sspe26 5 years ago
I hope you are being sarcastic. I'm Chinese and I hear about accidents in China all the time. You wouldn't believe how some of these accidents even happen.
