  • hey man, im 19 an a pipe smoker from the uk, wear the same kind of shooting hat (country bred though hey). crazy mad to find a tobacconist around here though, internets abit meh. my pipe always goes out alot though and im want to get a churchwarden (only for celebratory smokes though) how long you been in this game?

  • @ishotthesherifswife Ebay and google are your friends.

  • I've got a few videos posted with smoking tips for beginners. You can check them out.

  • more videos please. enjoyed watching both of them very much!!

  • I like your hat! A lot!

  • you are smoking to fast... but good video :)

  • i get the "is that weed mister?!?" comment all the time. haha...

  • you are hot!

  • start by spooning the tobacco out with the pipe itself, then pack, and repeat until youve got the bowl filled nicely.

  • You need a tamp man. Once you initially light it, the tabacco naturally rises to you tamp it and and light it again.

  • that's a beautiful pipe :)

  • Wow.....nice little video...

I can almost smell the aroma through the screen....!

I'll have to get my pipe going tomorrow.

  • How old are you?

  • Anyways, good video! Keep up the good work and smoking! :D Cheers.

  • And I must say, I've never gotten any of the comments you have :) The marijuana question I've only ever gotten once on internet. I think my friends share my mentality, just not my passion, and find my pipe smoking to be fairly interesting. I've been introducing a friend of mine to it, and he seems to enjoy it so far. Hehe. Strangers I meet only smile and find it funny sometimes. A young guy smoking a pipe isn't a usual sight, I guess. Hehe. I don't mind the attention tho, as long as it's good :)

  • The idea is that the wood in the matches burn with a cooler temperature than the butane or gas in lighters, which means the tobacco is ignited at a lower temperature, letting you easier keep the smoke cooler over all. But matches outdoors is a b**** to light with, and considering I can decisively regulate the temperature with how I puff the pipe anyways, I've completely given up on matches :) Butane pipe lighters is where it's at! Clean and effective. Gas lighters make the tobacco taste funky.

  • Howdy Neighbor. I only smoke native, chemical free, tobacco that I grow. I keep it in a rams sack that I tanned. I hang it around my neck and it makes for an easy dip. I sell ram sacks. Also, not only for tobacco but I've known a few who keep their family jewels in 'em. Enjoy Life.

  • Greetings fellow Canadian. Great video.

  • Ever been to Maine?

  • I am a middle-aged starter. Never smoked anything but cigars for the past year. Had my first puff on a pipe today and I loved it. It was a little awkward. I enjoy being a "piper". Very relaxing and smooth taste. I use cherry vanilla tobacco...

  • I personally have been struggling with matches. Like you, I have to use a lot of matches, so I use a lighter.

  • I'm a sister of the briar and really enjoyed this vid quite a bit. Also I am a fellow Canuck, cheers!

  • First head down the street to Boswellʻs, try some of their blends! Make sure you grab pipe while your there. Then head over the Jake Hackertʻs and get your self a OMS special. Then head over to Tewksbury lane and get some Hobbitʻs Weed and Bar Harbor. Then take a walk in North Woods, and when you ready eat a large supper and have a Night Cap!!! Hereʻs my advice for ya!

  • I'm a young pipe smoker too, and the police has stopped me twice during this year.

  • i use a zippo pipe lighter. it works great and i dont have any extra heat coming from it. you cant taste the fuel and it doesnt change the taste any.

  • Don't start.

  • A pipe can produce the coolest, sweetest smoke going....

  • Welcome and to me fire is fire. The more psi and O2 added the hotter it will be. I use a zippo or matches but mainly a zippo. Get some cheap mason jars from wal mart for tobacco storage. It keeps for a long long time. A good aromatic you may want to try is a blend by Vauen calked Devils Holiday. Hope this helps. Dagner

  • I am still smoking two curve stem Corncob pipes and waiting on my long (11") curved stem Churchwarden pipe. I am looking forward to breaking it in. I absolutely do love the cob pipes though and am in the process of learning to make some very nice ones. How long do you think it will take to break in my new pipe and what tobacco would you reccommend. I like flavor but want something strong in the aromatic. Thanks tons! Cheers

  • A Newbe Piper just subscribed. Love it! Cheers

  • Great vid! I am a newer pipe smoker as well. I have been smoking a pipe for about 4 years on and off, but only the past 4 months or so have I done it regularly.

I tend to store almost all of my tobaccos in clamp jars with rubber caskets. It may be overkill, bit with tobacco being expensive, it may help it last a long while.

    Blessings,

    David

  • I use a torch lighter because it gives me longer rest periods between puffs, as the torch flame burns deeper and more evenly into the tobacco chamber. I have a smaller pouch than the 1 in the video, but it bothers me a little bit too. I wish there was an alternative, like a single-dose tobacco pouch, for example.

  • nice video i enjoyed it...And not only do matches make a cooler smoke but it makes it taste way better... I store my tobacco in mason jar that i got from walmart for 1.99..Good video bro

  • thanks for the video!! I'm ordering my pipe soon, I'll let you know my experiences starting out and any questions I have :)

  • Everyone has a jar. You can use an empty(washed) jelly jar or similar with a seal in the lid. I have some empty candle "jars" that have a good sealing lid. Good to see a young piper. Tell your buddies you have a "mature" soul. lol All the presenters you named are excellent. Your tastes may change over time, not always but just relax and enjoy. thanks Gregg

  • My advise is that you should smoke in public and show the world what you are! Now, you're going to get comments no matter what! But if you are feeling like an outcast or self conscious that you are the only one smoking a pipe, you really need to turn the tables around with your attitude about that! :)

  • Addendum, Your choice, tastes and preference of pipe sizes, style and tobaccos will definitely change. Small pipes, long pipes, really big pipes, bent, curved. You have plenty of time to collect an array of pipes and try a limitless selection of tobacco. I use both matches and lighters. Prefer matches but the old bic is certainly more convenient,

  • Welcome aboard. Always good to see new pipe smokers joining the pipe smoking world. I always wonder.. why a pipe? I new from when I was a little kid that I wanted to smoke a pipe.. some sort of Karma thing.. good Karma at that. Anyway welcome and look forward to hearing about your adventures in pipe smoking as they evolve. You look like you have it all under control.

  • My advice would be get one of those little hammer things to push down the tobacco after you lit it. I feel like you dont need to relight as much. Only cost like $4

  • spray with water letting it set for a half hour or so mixing it back up and replacing in your jar...no need to throw it out! As long as your of legal age where your at smoke away and be pround to be a pipe smoker!

  • Ok bud here is my two cents: I use a bic lighter and have never noticed a difference, just dont use a torch type lighter and keep the flame within the bowl and away from the rim of the pipe...I smoke wide bowl pipes so generally dont have a problem. Store your tobacco for any length of period in sealed glass top jars and in the dark. If you can find blue glass, its the best because it keeps the most light out! You can bring back dryed out tobacco by placing it on waxed paper and lightly spr

  • Hi, I am a young pipe smoker from Alaska - 22 y/o. It seems you've had the opposite experience with tobacco pouches as I have. The first ounce of tobacco I bought I stored in a pouch, and it was as dry as dirt the next day. Maybe it has to do with weather differences. It's often quite cold and dry where I live. Since then, I have switched to small Mason jars for storing my tobacco and they have worked quite well. I also have gotten the old man comments from my friends quite a bit!

  • I must say since taking up pipe smoking and ditching cigarettes I find smoking actually enjoyable and indeed finding a pipe community is quite different too

  • I get the "you look like an old man" comment a lot. Though wearing driving caps (Which yours is pretty amazing by the way) and having mutton chops, along with smoking a pipe (all at only 19), I can see what they're talking about, hah.

I've loved pipes ever since I was young(er), I got my first pipe when I was about 12, it belonged to my great uncle, and he apparently carried it through WWII with him, but decided to wait till I was actually 18 to try it out, needless to say, I loved it.

  • It's nice to see that new guys are flowing in every day here to the youtube pipe smoking community. My advice is to to learn about all the kinds of tobaccos and try as many as you can get your hands on. Also smoke while drinking a beverage that goes well with your tobacco. It's hard for me to smoke without coffee or tea. ha. Enjoy it! You would be surprised to find out how many young pipemakers there are out there. not just on youtube.

  • Nice to see another pipe smoker on here

  • I remember years ago, when I was a young pipesmoker age 18 and my friend told me it was for old men, but tried my pipe.

Well, 2 days later he came by and asked if I would help him getting started smoking a pipe. I did and we have often enjoyed our pipes since. ;-)

  • As for storing your pipe tobacco, remember to re-seal the plastic pouch fully each time. If you find that is not adequate, you can double-bag it in a zip-lock plastic bag (or jar). You can also place a humidistat in the outer bag or jar for extra moisture retention.

I like to use a leather pipe tobacco pouch. Surprisingly I find the the roll-up style pouches work better than the zip-up style. Apparently the zippers just aren't quite as airtight.

    Again, welcome!

  • Men of all ages enjoy smoking pipes. Recently a lot of younger guys have been discovering pipes.

You can enjoying smoking both aromatics and non-aromatics without worrying about heat or tongue bit, just remember to smoke *slow* and steady. If your pipe does happen to get to hot to hold comfortably (or if you hold the bowl against your cheek and it is too warm) just set it down and switch to a different pipe for a bit.

  • Hey David, great Pipe video! Welcome!

Either wooden matches or a butane lighter work great. The heat of your smoking is determined mainly by how fast you puff, as well as the type of pipe tobacco and somewhat by type, size and shape of your pipe. I tend to like larger pipes partially because the larger surface area means you can smoke slower and the larger thicker walls dissipate heat better. But medium-sized pipes can be just as enjoyable. That bent you are smoking suits you quite well.

  • what kind of tobacco do you use?

  • Hey welcome to the online pipe smoking community. I started smoking aromatics but switched to English blends because I got sick of tongue bite. As far as matches vs. lighters, I use all of em. Matches are ideal but not always convenient. I have a pipe lighter that works sometimes. They concentrate the flame better.

As far as storing tobacco, I live in Arizona so I keep my tobacco in tins or jars and use drops of distilled water to keep it good. Hope this helps. Cheers!

  • Great vid Brah!

  • I love my pouches like yours...it does take some getting used to though. I always light up with Zippos...they are better for complete lighting! Welcome to pipe smoking!!!

  • I read the same thing, the weird thing is, I would suspect that as the burning is hotter, it would be easier to light something up. But on the contrary, matches which burn cooler are awesome to start a pipe, weird, I haven't found a good explanation about it. For storing baccy, nothing like mason jars (I use the ones with the rubber seals), it won't matter much if your baccy is heavily cased or it has a lot of moisture.

    Cheers, Harvey

  • Lighters using butane are more convenient and do not leave any abnormal smells or tastes, but it doesn't matter whether you use one or use matches.

Store tobacco long-term in something air-tight. Use a pouch or roll-up for single day consumption. If all you smoke is Captain Black tho you could leave it in a pile on your kitchen table for a month and it wouldn't dry out.

Size of pipe is immaterial. Thicker walls mean less heat on your hands but big pipes are harder to hold in the mouth.

    Ken

  • Using a lighter or a match always use the white part of the flame.

  • Oh and awesome hat! You pull off the look better then myself. I have noticed that more and more younger men are getting into pipe smoking - it may be an anti culture thing. Whatever it is, I'm thrilled to see the pipe culture growing. Thanks for the shout out! Depending on what tobacco you're smoking and the weather, they will influence how hot your tobacco burns. If it's windy outside it will cause your tobac to burn quick and hot. Flavored tobacs with lots of sugar burn hotter too.

  • @BoldODonahue Thanks a lot for all the advice! I really enjoy your videos and I can't wait to see a few stationed in your new man cave.

  • Enjoyed your video, bro.

  • Lighters or matches don't effect how hot or cool the pipe burns. Some fellows don't like to use lighters as there is a small taste associated with lighters. Matches are great if there's not a strong wind blowing it out. I like to use a zippo and find only the first couple of puffs have any sort of flavor from the lighter and the rest is great :) Never, ever use torch lighters on your pipe as it'll scorch the wood. Pipe lighters are great as they burn down at an angle which makes it easier.

  • Some people say the larger-bowled pipes burn cooler and thus taste better.
