monica had so much more to her game, but it was taken away, with the way sheh it the ball, vollys for sure...she is just nineteen here people for get that
Hopefully, that monster who attacked Monica so viciously and cruelly is suffering from horrible disease and in poverty. I know that sounds terrible to say, but he's never apologized and he got off scot-free so he deserves it.
However, Monica was the victim of a unique and almost unimaginable attack. Attempted murder?? on a tennis court?? Put it in a novel and no one would believe it. And she came back, not all the way, but very close. And she never sounds bitter, and she is very good in the way that she skirts the Graf issue. Monica was the dominant player, although I still adore Graf's beautiful movement on the court and her fierce concentration. But Monica proved that she had a champion's heart. ALLEZ, MONICA!
It is sad that Some Seles fans have to knock Steffi. The great players are, generally, not close friends. They are not each other's fans. Each has a precarious hold on a ranking and a reputation, and is trying determinedly (or desperately) to enhance his or her own career. Steffi was clearly a pretty introverted person without great social skills, who was battling as hard as she could with her family problems, and the press, and finding a way to beat Seles. Doesn't make her a bad person.
@kljMN2 and the Henin and Williams fans do the same now. I try to stay away from that but sometimes I cant help but stepping in to defend Justine against the bias claims. It is too bad the fan bases of these players cant respect each other the way Martina and Chris fans always did, as well as Hingis and Davenport fans.
in monica's book she said parche was there watching her during practice and that security didnt show up till an hour late, she also said he was at the hotel in the hallway and she would see him.
sad to think that would be her last tournament as #1 because of the stabbing a couple of days later. The stabbing helped Graf bigtime...Monica would never be the same player again, physically or mentally.
she was so focused. Nothing was going to stop her until 1997 when Hingis, Davenport and Williams emerged. But by then she would have been such a different player mentally, experience wise, record wise, that she would have beaten them half the time. And she would have owned so many grandslams. Saddest thing in modern era tennis! But despite that, she's still one of the all-time greats, amazing!
Yup. She would have had 15-18 slams by 97 and would probably have taken over Graf by the numbers at that point. She already had more French Opens than Steffi (3-2), same number of US (2) and Aus opens (3), more YE Championships (3-2) but trailed at wimbledon (0-4). Would have been interesting to see a top Seles vs Hingis. Martina was so good in 97, but Monica trounced her at the French 98, playing like she used to...
Monica had too much power and stamina as the #1 to be stopped by a Hingis who just babies the ball on the court. I only see the Williams sisters as possible rivals to Monica because they have power and physical ability. keep in mind Monica has beaten all of them on the tour while being out of shape and not playing at the best like when she dominated women's tennis.
@italo36 I am not a Hingis fan but you are ignorant to say at her peak in 97-99 she babied the ball. You probably have never even seen her play. She didnt have the power of the Williams sisters but who does. Even a peak Seles or peak Graf dont either.
actually Monica has stated 2 or 3 week that she will never return to the game. She has officially retired in a statement. Here is the Monica machine at her best physically and mentally and she was only going to get better, she was working on a big serve and net play, she had and still has the most powerful groundstrokes in women's tennis...
Hard to watch this. Parsche was in the crowd that day planning to stab (and probably kill) Monica. He did. She was on her way to win the French Open for the 3rd time in a row. God she was playing so well, she was so fit...This makes me sad and angry.
that fucker was there???? i cant believe it....how much i hate him i would do the same that he did against Monica. I was frightened to see monica seles in this match, with the clothes, in that tennis tournament in this tennis court, and I think that a few days after she was stabbed just incredible .... .... damned PArche.
Yeah, that's the tournament where Monica was attacked. She's been treated badly by WTA and most of all Steffi. Arantxa and Sabatini were only 2 players who showed nicety and consideration for Monica. Monica is a true champion.
No she didn't. But she was the only player who sat with Monica at US Open 93 or 94 when Monica was there as a spectator. Monica was in New York for a charity event and she visited the US open ground as a low profile spectator. But Arantxa spotted her and sat down and talked.
Steffi did not cause this attack in any way. Its not fair to blame an innocent person. Some people deal with things in different ways, however, the tournament should have stopped after the incident.
Could not defeat is a bit harsh. Graf beat Seles 6 times out of 10 before the stabbing.
Graf had the edge on faster surfaces (beat number 1 Seles on fast hardcourt in 1991 and at Wimbledon the next year); Seles on slower surfaces (French Open clay, Australian Open rebound ace).
They never played eachother at the Us Open before the stabbing.
please consider that monica lost to graf in close matches when she was still a little girl who had not fully developed her game. and in the age of 18-19 i don't think she was at her best...so that win-lose fingue could not be more representative :-)
Yeah. Graf visited Seles in the hospital that night, then played her match the next morning---sound like an unfeeling robot or what?? Jesus, you've won 11 Slams at that point, I think you can take this tournament off for christs sake.
She had a viral infection that sidelined her after the Paris Indoors(lost to Navratilova) until the Hamburg tournament. And not to sound sick, but I too would like to see the Maleeva match. I actually have this Tarabini match on dvd.
I'm of mixed feelings about seeing the Maleeva match - I've already seen so many clips of that horrible day that I would rather not see it again. But then again, it's not as if I would have to watch it again! :-)
It's clear from this match Monica was starting to mix it up with some net play, it would have been fascinating to see how effective this would have been against steffi on grass.
can u post that match of maleeva, but take out the incident
i rekon if monica hadnt been ill she with that virus infection she wouldnt have played this tournament. BUT, I still think Parche would have got her anywhere in the world.
If this had happened at the US open for example he would have seriously got a beat down by those big security guards

@dasglasperlenspiel10 : True, but then again, I've seen several instances of Graf fans dissing Monica so it goes both ways.

You can see the security guard right next to her while she was packing her rackets, so where were they during the next match when she got stabbed?

Was Parche in the crowd during this match?
Seles btw went for her 4th French Open in a row.
She had beaten Graf 10-8 in the third set the year before in that epic match.
And I don't know if she played that well in this tournament because she lost the first set in that fatal match against Maleeva.
hanny088 4 years ago
you're right, on to win her 4th French Open.
But you're wrong, she was leading 6/4 4/3 against Maleeva when she got stabbed.

she didn't lose the first set to maleeva actually! she was leading by a set and 4-3!

she sure knew her career would pick up. And it did. 8 titles in 1994 including 2 slams and a number 1 ranking a few months later.
How much would she have won with seles competing? honestly, seles had her number on any surface.
