In large companies the cost of labour is just a small part of the overall cost of the business. Corporations will move to where the costs are less, it's only natural. All game theory analysis of labor dynamics indicate that the more aware a worker is of their role in the profit equation the more likely they are to organize and bargain collectively. It is simply in their rational self interest, it isn't an issue of ideology.

What about all the times that companies have paid workers barely enough to survive and keep their employees in check through intimidation and violence? If you don't believe me look at the way people were treated by employers before unions became popular. We keep over 1100 Ironworkers busy. Does any nonunion company hire people just for the hell of it? In addition to work, we have to make sure that we don't have class sizes too big. (unions have apprenticeships and train their workers, unlike nonunion contractors-paid for with dues) Why haven't you set up an apprenticeship program so that you don't need to hire nonunion carpenters?

In large companies the cost of labour is just a small part of the overall cost of the business. Corporations will move to where the costs are less, it's only natural. All game theory analysis of labor dynamics indicate that the more aware a worker is of their role in the profit equation the more likely they are to organize and bargain collectively. It is simply in their rational self interest, it isn't an issue of ideology.
As far as the ideology goes, a scab is someone willing to betray their friends and neighbors. It is perfectly reasonable for a community to ostracize such people.

Unions are great. Every benefit that a unionized or non unionized person gets goes right back to union negotiations. If you don't believe me look at the way people were treated by employers before unions became popular. For example at the Stelco strike many years ago people were paid 25c per hour and had zero benefits and got no vacation until they had been with the company for 25 years then they got 3 days off.

To depend on the charity of the boss is pure folly. Very often a bad union can be a tool to keep the workers from organizing on their own. Essentially workers need to be aware of their position in the profit equation. They need to take both power and responsibility from union officials with UNIONDEMOCRACY.

Hey guess what IWLocal8? The HUGE fucking majority of "We the People" have already delivered their fucking verdict on unions. That is why less than 8% of private sector workers are willing to belong to a union.
There is also a really good reason a whole fucking lot of people see unions as full of corrupt thugs out to intimidate people, and that reason aint because of people telling lies about unions.

Perhapse the pay difference is related to their importance to the business. Standing below a car operating a drill is honorable work, but far more people can do it than can actually run the business. Thus, the CEO is more valuable to the business than the laborer. In any case, the ultimate decision of value for a public corp. lies in the hands of the shareholders. They are the ones the business exists to serve.

Yeah, that's why ours has a waiting list to get in. It was Union Ironworkers who volunteered and took away what was left of the WTC after 9/11 so that the NYFD could search for victims. (NYFD by the way are also Union members) Obsolete are those who don't care about "We The People" and providing workers with a liveable wage and health care.

I'm a non-union Carpenter in NJ and I have hired many retired and out of work union-Carpenters through the years. Many of them wouldn't know a framing square from a hand plane. I know all about the Union Ironworkers at the WTC, my cousin was one of them.

We keep over 1100 Ironworkers busy. Does any nonunion company hire people just for the hell of it? In addition to work, we have to make sure that we don't have class sizes too big. (unions have apprenticeships and train their workers, unlike nonunion contractors-paid for with dues) Why haven't you set up an apprenticeship program so that you don't need to hire nonunion carpenters?
