Look, if God were truly perfect then he would have made everyone and everything perfectly. If everyone and everything were perfect then there wouldn't be no sin (crime) because everyone would be loving, joyful, peaceful. This story is deceptive. Although he was a religious Jew for a short time in his childhood, for most of life Einstein rejected the belief of a Personal God. When challenged he compared his belief with that of Spinoza a philosopher who had been excommunicated from the Jewish Community of Amsterdam. Also the argument given here contradicts scripture - see Isaiah 45:7. In it both darkness and evil are described as produced by God.

Yes, there are times when these things are necessary but that still does not make the act 'good', these actions are merely designated as 'necessary evils'. Look, if God were truly perfect then he would have made everyone and everything perfectly. If everyone and everything were perfect then there wouldn't be no sin (crime) because everyone would be loving, joyful, peaceful. Life would not be boring because like we get to use 100% of our minds and can travel, invent, have sex and make babies, or whatever else. This story is deceptive. Although he was a religious Jew for a short time in his childhood, for most of life Einstein rejected the belief of a Personal God. When challenged he compared his belief with that of Spinoza a philosopher who had been excommunicated from the Jewish Community of Amsterdam. Also the argument given here contradicts scripture - see Isaiah 45:7. In it both darkness and evil are described as produced by God.

Heat and Light are forms of energy that can be measured objectively. If one thing has less heat than another, then it is objectively colder than the first thing. If a room has less light than another, it is objectively darker.
However, "good" is not a form of energy. It is neither measurable nor objective. I could just as easily claim that "evil is the lack of good". The analogy falls apart.

People aren't judged in groups, but individually. The choice to do good is a choice indeed, as is the choice to do evil. Anyway, that logic in the statement of Strong Belief = Evil, No Belief = Good, while not applicable to individuals so much as groups, makes perfect sense as any "one side good, opposite bad" statement. I said that good works are more good when done by an Atheist, because they believe that there will be no earthly or heavenly compensation for goodwill, as opposed to most religious goodwill peoples, who do goodwill only to get praise from their gods.

Are you ever happy when someone steals from you? Will you be 10 years from now? of course not. You'll always despise people stealing from you.

@Sweddude Nonsense, what is morally right will always be morally right regardless of time. If one generation thought murder was right and another generation thought murder was wrong, both generations cannot be right at the same time or else you'd be contradicting yourself, rendering morality to be either right or wrong. Just because one person in the past had his ethics skewed, it does not follow that morality is 'flexible', it just means that he was misguided. Hence ethics is indeed objective.

@Sweddude No, murdering, stealing, and deceiving others is never okay. Yes, there are times when these things are necessary but that still does not make the act 'good', these actions are merely designated as 'necessary evils'. And its not that society 'makes up' what is morally right or wrong, they discover whether 'it' it truly is right or wrong. It is the action that matters, and just because they are necessary does not mean they are good actions. Necessary is not synonymous to good.

Morality did not originate in the human mind, we weren't born with a concept of justice, we had to learn it from objective reality unless if you can show me a new born who was literate in law theory. How can morality possibly be relative? This very argument is based off you thinking that I'm 'wrong' and your 'right', we are both striving for objectivity in our ethics and beliefs.

Atheists tend to use the Crusades as an example of religion causing war and death, but the Crusades was fought primarily for land. Almost all wars are fought for greed. The most heinous crimes in the modern world were committed by Atheists (Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, ect.); does that mean Atheism is inherently evil?

This is very poetic, but the child's response doesn't really address the teacher's syllogism. If God created everything, then there would be nothing that represents the "absence" of God. The student posts two physics (observable) examples, then gives a third, philosophical (not observable) one. Then sits, as if "matter settled." That's not how it works. He didn't actually address his teacher's point.
I'm not an Atheist, by the way; I just don't think the kid made a valid case.

@ericdengm It really only makes sense when you accept the Biblical account of man kinds choice to reject God in the Garden of Eden. The whole world was subjected to futility. Man and the very ground was cursed. Before that it was good. Don't know where you are in your spirituality but I always encourage seekers and sceptics alike to first really understand the Biblical position as explained by a sincere follower of God not a cynic first before they choose to accept or reject it.

Also, einstein, like most theoretical physicists was an atheist. He used "god" to mean the universe and "Spinoza's God". There are many, MANY quotes of Einstein stating he thinks religion is a childish superstition
Also, Einstein went to a Catholic school and certainly all his teachers MUST have been Catholics as well, but no teacher/ professor would be teaching like this in his school, certainly not an atheist!

Wow. There's so much wrong there I don't even know where to start.
First off, this little anecdote has about as much credibility as Lady Hope's account of Darwin's last-minute conversion.
How strange it would be for the teacher to be making such a claim in the first place, considering Einstein went to a Catholic school.
And given that little nugget, it's likely his teacher would be familiar with Augustine, who started all this Privatio Boni nonsense in the first place.

not only is the whole argument a logical fallacy (false dilemma) but it's also an urban myth and outright lie. this story was around LONG before albert einstein was. see snopesDOTcom for more info.
Also, Evil can't be the opposite of god. Not only is your god supposed to be everywhere, but the god of the Holy Buy Bull is very evil.
