I hated this math program. Fortunately my kids also go to Japanese school and they did't depend on the Bellevue school district for math. They're using Expressions this year which is better.

I've taught with Investigations for many years and I've watched my own kids learn using Investigations and with other programs. There are many aspects of Investigations that I admire and I do think that our new program includes enough opportunities for inquiry that the students won't lose that piece. However, Investigations never provided enough practice plus some kids would remain stuck at very low (less efficient strategies) levels because they never quite figured out the algorithms.

Fortunately, we are using a new math curriculum this year ('08-'09)which is Math Expressions (elementary). Please check it out- it is a great program and the teachers are thrilled (and I think parents will be also)! Not anything like Investigations!

Funny how Investigations still got #3 from the state in terms of alignment with our new PE's... but Expressions was 4th, right?

I don't know, I think inquiry based curricula really makes students have a deeper understanding of math concepts, instead of just doing what a teacher tells them (not really truly understanding).

Ahh... who sponsored this video!?! Kids who used to hate math LOVE investigations because it is approachable and accepts multiple learning styles. Parents need to get wise!

These parents are showing their own ignorance in making this video. The parents have trouble helping their students because they never really mastered the concepts, and they are blaming the curriculum.

How many times have you heard someone say, "Just show me the formula and I can do it?"

This curriculum enables students to approach and solve any problem without memorizing formulas.

The problem with public schools in all subjects - not just math - all spring from the same root problem. The root of the problem is that government is involved. The government does not want a smart populace who thinks too much.

There is mastery inthe mentioned curriculums: just because it doesn't look like the old drill and kill books we used in the dark ages doesn't mean it's wrong.  Look at how many of the 'baby-boomer' generation that proclaim to be scared of or hate math--it's because of the way it was presented the. (It really wasn't taught, per se. It was just worksheet after worksheet of stuff that had no relevance.

Of course it's biased. Just as the school district's claims are biased. Every generation has those who "hate" math. Show me your stats that prove this has changed. It's just another misguided pendulum swing. When society learns that a balance should be taught, we'll have a valid education system. Until then, we have "used car salespeople" touting their "new" teaching methods to gullible school boards and knee-jerk reactive parents.

Ed reform lunacy is based on dropping basics, and requiring the weakest performers to take the same curriculum as the gifted, rather than a traditional curriculum which tracks people according to their ability. All are assumed to be gifted, no one is allowed to be below average, or the guilty will be punished.

The best high school rating is also bogus. It is based on percentage students taking AP. Supt Riley not only believes that all students can learn calculus, but wants to require all students to take AP (college level course) to qualify for a high school diploma.
