Michael Dukakis was genuine! He had a good heart & was sincere! I dont doubt he wouldve done OK! What he lacked was charisma & drive! He needed to be much more feisty!
Mondale and Dukakis were weak candidates and would have made even weaker presidents. Idealism and New Deal economic policies were not what we needed in the '80s. We needed strength and endurance. I would have preferred Gary Hart be the nominee, but he just had to get into some monkey business, didn't he?
If we had elected Dukakis and Mondale as our previous Presidents instead of Regan and Bush this country would be a lot better off today. These were men who fought for working families and middle class. We would already have had univ HC in this country if Dukakis had been elected. JRodB you are absolutely correct 100%
The economy may have "shown noticeable improvement" in the last two weeks, but the news came out today that the government will have to borrow 50 cents for every dollar they will spend in this new budget. Obama doesn't care: he'll be long gone before my children and grandchildren will have to pay for his budget.
Dukakis was a joke. Mondale was a joke. Nobody could take the democratic nominees seriously with Jimmy Carter fresh in our minds. I think in 2009 we need to be reminded that high taxes, high inflation, and wasteful spending is why our economy was bad in the 70's and its only going to make this recession worse. It was government who got us here in the first place with forcing risky loans on banks, now government can justify every wasteful spending bill bcuz we'll collapse without it.
How's that philosophy working out for you? The economy has shown noticeable improvement in the last few weeks.
The economy got bad in the 70's because of a fluke: the price Vietnam War coupled with LBJ's just as expensive Great Society programs. Both couldn't coexist together without serious ramifications. If LBJ had pulled out of Vietnam before things got bad in '68, we would have been fine. Learn your damn history.
He's a much more passionate speechmaker in my opinion, but I've never been one to tear up over 'Yes we can'... this comes from a non-partisan observer.
As a citizen, I sincerely hope that Obama does great things, and acknowledge the racial accomplisment already. Still, I'll save my final analysis for when or if he heals our country, or at least starts the ball rolling as no leader yet has.
Dukakis was a dud just like Kerry.
