It's based on a novella also called The Kreutzer Sonata, which in turn is so named after a piece written about in the book called The Kreutzer Sonata, a.k.a Beethoven's 9th Violin Sonata, which is infamous in it's own right.

Janáček is one of the dearest composers to me. Great piece, And yes, it's sad, just like Tolstoy's work. Janáček really did capture its spirit!

Janacek: one of the all time masters up there with Beethoven Mozart Bach Wagner Verdi Monteverdi Mussorgsky Schubert - those I'd take to the desert island I luckily don't have to go to :-).
