Sounds were much much less annoying when playing on a real pc speaker. The pc speaker sharp noises were filtered mostly from behind the pc case. The reason it sounds annoying is because its replayed in your headphones.

That pc-speaker square wave sounds so annoying, altough it maybe one of the better examples of pc-speaker use. But the Adlib soundtrack is so much better, not to mention the Roland MT32. It's so sad that most players never knew that there even was support for sound cards as the support has to be enabled via command line parameter, a for adlib/sound blaster, and r for roland mt32.
