the best at this role was Nureyev. The crazed Tartar pirate's role was made for him.The rest are all terrific but he opposite Margo was virginity meeting the flame.
This role of Ali, the slave of Conrad, is designed to be a contrast to the other variations in the Pas des Trois. In context, it is a sensual, sexual, and exotic element in the ballet. Ideally, the male dancer is of the "soft" body type, of which Nureyev's and Ruzimatov's are good examples) capable of long, sinuous lines and plasticity that evokes "Oriental" arabesques. Ali should be executed with an awareness of that rich fantasy life for things exotic, more than just athleticism.
Ruzimatov seems to be born for dancing Ali.. Not only his figure but also his racial characteristics are ideal for dancing this role. And his artistry goes beyond the virtuosism he has indeed. A perfect balance between technique, virtousisim, artistry and beauty. I like better Misha's variation as a technical skill. But farukh is the perfect Ali. For virtuoso dancers. Ivan, Misha, Acosta, Schauffus, and some others in not given order.
I have to agree, Ruzimatov is the perfect Ali, and he is in fact one of the best male dancers ever, very unique. I find it dificult to compare him with M.B. since they have different styles and qualities, but as you say, Ruzimatov may really BE Ali... As for Vasiliev I really think we are fortunate to witness what will become a phenomenon in a few years, he is a genious! I can just wonder what years and more experience will do to him, it is going to be great! Can´t wait!
@raulishnikov I am with you all the way. I agree . I am always hunting for a version that stands up to Misha's. I have yet to find it, but I LOVE THIS MANS ARTISTRY, RAW POWER, CONTROL, AND ABANDON. HE HAS GREAT TECHNIQUE BUT MISHA HAD MORE. Vasiliev's Spartacus is damned near perfection though!! SOOO INSANELY GOOD. You need to check out Brooklyn Mac in this role as well. He is posted on youtube. I'ts really something special!! :0)
Uuum no. I watche dit and it the variations wer too open for me. Danc eis art and as suchis open to interpretation by botht he artist and the audience but I was not moved. ia m glad I watched it because it's another frame of reference.
BRILLIANT!!! I STILLL AM SEARCHING FOR SOMEONE TO PERFORM THIS PIECE BETTER THAN MISHA BUT I'LL BE DAMNED IF THIS MAN IS NOT BRILLIANT AND ABLE. Must see him in person.Thank god I live in NY!! BRAV-Fing VO!!!
yes is from a series about him tiled dancer was about 80's ,but l saw him live many times live in 79 in london in don q corsayre bayadere and many others ,he was tremendous ,could match micha step by step and was may be a better turner, now he is 63
Really? I'd love to have watched Peter dancing on stage, and have no doubts that he can match Misha and is better spinning actually the first time i saw the step Ivan is performing here instead of the doble saut de basque (or dbl pas de chat) in the peter Shauffus video. I have somewhere copies of the "Dancer" series, but in Mexico they were transmitted with kind of mixed chapters. Dancers and I am a dancer were the very first videos i got when i was at ballet school from my classmates.

His technique rivals Baryshinkovs... his line isn't quite as great.... still great performance...

I agree! Although Vasiliev is stupendous here, for me Ruzimatov just *is* Ali. No-one can match that sinuous upper body, exoticism and magnetism.
