i respect all of this and understand but i am always curious why at the Wat i attend in the US the lay people come and cook for the moks everyday and provide food yet i see the monks at the grocery every sunday buying 400-500$ worth of groceries including many cakes and cookies. i have always been curious about this. i go to this temple everyday and talk with the 5 monks who live there, but i am very confused
@BeingNobody1956, dear friend. If I were you, I would look for some other monastery than you are going to currently.
All the monasteries are not equal. Some are practicing with genuine vigor and some are not even trying. The one you are going to sounds like the latter. If there's no practice, there's no possibilites of the liberation/enlightenment. If a monastery is not practicing, than you can be assured that it's time to look for others or practice on your own.

In Australia, we have the English expression 'to go walkabouts' which is similar to going on tudong journey in Aboriginal & Australian culture. ^^
