  • The tuning doesn't seem perfect, but just an issue of live performance. More significant is the insistence on the continental Ockegehem blended tradition of inscrutable architecture- English music was developing its own more articulated style and though this is a Lamentation the expressive idom is slightly out of place. This sounds Flemish or Venetian and doesn't quite do justice to Tallis's detailed insights.

  • Give Pro Cantione Antiqua a listen before making up your mind.

  • the tallis scholars do my favorite rendition....it's absolutely amazing

  • I fagiolini!!!! ahahahaahha

  • This is amazing, beautiful, exquisite Thanks for posting

  • This is the most inspiring performance of the Lamentations I've ever heard. I am a big fan of the work, and commend I Fagiolini on their impeccable rendition!

Comments referring to being out of tune may do well to examine the score and to study Tallis and other period composers to see the way they use dissonances.

This a deceivingly difficult work to imbue with meaning, but they have done so. Lovely, bravo.

  • @pezdyspensr check out the Hilliard Ensemble's rendition....

  • @pezdyspensr check out the Hilliard Ensemble's rendition....IMO, their blend is much better, their tempo is much more profound, and their use of vibrato is much more reserved. Granted, I'm referring to a recording, and this is a live recording.

  • @ohschoirdirector Thanks for the suggestion! The Hilliard Ensemble is the ultimate in choral refinement. I see what you mean. It is fascinating the difference in approach each group takes. Hearing Hilliard helps me to hear the inaccuracies of I Fagiolini, and yet this video shows a group with a vigorous sense of humanity in their music. Plus, as you have said, live recordings are unforgiving. A recording that seems lie half between I Fagiolini and Hilliard is the Tallis Scholars recording.

  • @pezdyspensr Hilliard is really phenomenal...I had the chance to hear them live and hear them lecture about singing in a quasi-masterclass environment. One of the BEST vocal ensembles I am aware of. That said, you should check out the Gabrieli Consort, the Orlando Consort, Cardinall's Musick, the Oxford Cameretta, the Clerks of Oxenford,...those are the lesser known ensembles compared to the Tallis Scholars, the Sixteen, the Monteverdi Choir, and Stile Antico among others. They're all VERY good!

  • far to many voices out of tune here

  • @TomRAFC I don't think you really understand what you're listening to; the tuning seems pretty impeccable to me!

  • @telucis1 what an ignorant statement. i don't hear what you hear so i must evidently not be educated in music? philistine

  • @TomRAFC I don't think my statement was ignorant at all because so far, you seem to be the only writer who believes the group's tuning is faulty. Oh mea culpa. You're the only one posting who is educated in music. Some people are not aware of compositional conventions that were acceptable for the period in which a piece was composed. I've read comments on YouTube, mainly with respect to Renaissance era music that illustrate this well. Perhaps the jet engines have affected your hearing.

  • @telucis1 your original statement was very ignorant because you claimed i didn't understand what i was listening to. i am well versed in music and i think they are out which is an opinion i am entitled to thanks.

  • Can't tell the difference between you and the King's Singers! Beautiful! I wish I could get a few guys from my choral society to get together and sing this. Exquisite.

  • This is exquisite!

  • BRAVI, BRAVISSIMI & AMAZING ALSO !

  • nice voices but a tenor terribly out of tune...! gives me chickenpocks in the wrong sense.

  • F%$& me , tidy bitta music , like, innit butt :-)

  • bravi, bravissimi!

  • AMAZING

  • Fantastic performance! I especially like the tempo.

  • Bravo, très intéressant... bonne homogénéité des voix. Continuez. Merci
